Graphite surfaces interact weakly with molecules compared to other conducting surfaces, bringing the molecule-molecule interaction to the foreground. C on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite is a model system for studying the molecular self-assembly on surfaces. Our scanning tunneling microscopy measurements at liquid nitrogen temperatures confirm the previously observed island growth mode.

Hypoxia is a characteristic feature of many cancer types, which ensues when the growth of a tumour outpaces its oxygen supply. The cellular response to reduced oxygen tension is centred around the hypoxia-inducible transcription factors (HIFs), which become stabilized under hypoxic conditions. In addition, a number of oxygen-independent mechanisms of HIF regulation have been described, which also play a role at distinct stages of tumour progression.

Controlled activation of lymphangiogenesis through functional biomaterials represents a promising approach to support wound healing after surgical procedures, yet remains a challenge. In a synthetic biological approach, we therefore set out to mimic the basal microenvironment of human primary dermal lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) during lymphangiogenesis. As the extracellular matrix component hyaluronan (HA) regulates lymphangiogenesis, we designed a bifunctional surface in which adhesive peptide ligands and short HA oligosaccharides (sHA) tethered to nanoparticles are copresented to the basal side of LECs in a controlled, concentration-dependent manner.

During tissue injury, inflammation, and tumor growth, enhanced production and degradation of the extracellular matrix glycosaminoglycan hyaluronan (HA) can lead to the accumulation of small HA (sHA) oligosaccharides. We have previously reported that accumulation of sHA in colorectal tumors correlates with lymphatic invasion and lymph node metastasis, and therefore, investigated here are the effects of sHA on the lymphatic endothelium. Using cultured primary lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) and ex vivo and in vivo lymphangiogenesis assays, we found that in contrast to high-molecular-weight HA (HMW-HA), sHA of 4-25 disaccharides in length can promote the proliferation of LECs and lymphangiogenesis in a manner that is dependent on their size and concentration.

We present a comprehensive micro- and macrorheological study of the effect of weak depletion attraction (Ψ ≈ 1-10 kT) on dense colloidal suspensions stabilized by short-range repulsive interactions. We used aqueous polymer dispersions as model system and demonstrated the unique capabilities of multiple particle tracking (MPT) to disclose structural changes in such technically important systems exhibiting many characteristic features of hard sphere systems. Below the hard sphere freezing point ϕ, viscosity increases monotonically with increasing Ψ due to the transition from a fluid to a fluid/crystalline and finally to a gel state.

The short membrane-active peptide BP100 [KKLFKKILKYL-NH2] is known as an effective antimicrobial and cell penetrating agent. For a functional alanine scan each of the 11 amino acids was replaced with deuterated Ala-d3, one at a time. MIC assays showed that a substitution of Lys did not affect the antimicrobial activity, but it decreased when a hydrophobic residue was replaced.

Hyphenated low-field NMR techniques are promising characterization methods for online process analytics and comprehensive offline studies of soft materials. By combining different analytical methods with low-field NMR, information on chemical and physical properties can be correlated with molecular dynamics and complementary chemical information. In this review, we present three hyphenated low-field NMR techniques: a combination of near-infrared spectroscopy and time-domain NMR (TD-NMR) relaxometry, online (1) H-NMR spectroscopy measured directly after size exclusion chromatographic (SEC, also known as GPC) separation and a combination of rheometry and TD-NMR relaxometry for highly viscous materials.

The interactions between hydrophobic or semihydrophobic gold and silver nanoparticles (NPs) and a dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) bilayer as a model cell membrane in two ionic solutions result in the structural reorganization within the bilayer manifested as locally increased nanomechanical compaction in the vicinity of NP clusters as well as changed overall thermotropic properties. The effects of NP surface charge and hydrophobicity were examined using AFM imaging, force spectroscopy and IR spectroscopy. The NP clustering occurred during hydration process of dry films containing both the DMPC molecules and the NPs by the mechanism in which the number of bilayer deformations was reduced by NP clustering.

Memory judgments can be based on accurate memory information or on decision bias (the tendency to report that an event is part of episodic memory when one is in fact unsure). Event related potentials (ERP) correlates are important research tools for elucidating the dynamics underlying memory judgments but so far have been established only for investigations of accurate old/new discrimination. To identify the ERP correlates of bias, and observe how these interact with ERP correlates of memory, we conducted three experiments that manipulated decision bias within participants via instructions during recognition memory tests while their ERPs were recorded.

Altertoxins I-III, alterlosins I and II, alteichin (alterperylenol), stemphyltoxins I-IV, stemphyperylenol, stemphytriol, 7-epi-8-hydroxyaltertoxin I, and 6-epi-stemphytriol are mycotoxins derived from perylene quinone, for which the absolute configuration was not known. Electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra were calculated for these compounds and compared with measured spectra of altertoxins I-III, alteichin, and stemphyltoxin III and with reported Cotton effects. Specific rotations were calculated and compared with reported specific rotations.

Background: Association studies have implicated the glycosaminoglycan hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid, HA) and its degrading enzymes the hyaluronidases in tumour progression and metastasis. Oligosaccharides of degraded HA have been ascribed a number of biological functions that are not exerted by high-molecular-weight HA (HMW-HA). However, whether these small HA oligosaccharides (sHA) have a role in tumour progression currently remains uncertain due to an inability to analyse their concentration in tumours.
