Retrospective evaluation of acid-base imbalances, clinicopathologic alterations, and prognostic factors in hospitalized calves with Eimeria-associated diarrhea.

Introduction: After the neonatal period Eimeriosis is one of the most common causes of large intestinal diarrhea in calves. In contrast to neonatal calves with diarrhea, there are very few reports about the clinicopathological alterations in affected animals, which are mainly based on experimental data. The aim of the present study was therefore to characterize acid-base and related clinicopathologic alterations in calves with Eimeria-associated diarrhea and to identify variables associated with in-hospital mortality.

Traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine (TCIM) research encompasses a diverse range of health practices rooted in various cultural, philosophical, and historical frameworks. As global interest in conducting research in this field grows, the need for rigorous research to support the integration of evidence-based TCIM therapies into mainstream healthcare has become essential. Data sharing is critical to advancing TCIM research by enhancing reproducibility, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, promoting ethical practices, and addressing global health challenges.

Dengue virus and Zika virus alter endoplasmic reticulum-mitochondria contact sites to regulate respiration and apoptosis.

During infection, dengue virus (DENV) and Zika virus (ZIKV), two (ortho)flaviviruses of public health concern worldwide, induce alterations of mitochondria morphology to favor viral replication, suggesting a viral co-opting of mitochondria functions. Here, we performed an extensive transmission electron microscopy-based quantitative analysis to demonstrate that both DENV and ZIKV alter endoplasmic reticulum-mitochondria contact sites (ERMC). This correlated at the molecular level with an impairment of ERMC tethering protein complexes located at the surface of both organelles.

Immune-checkpoint-inhibitors (ICI) target key regulators of the immune system expressed by cancer cells that mask those from recognition by the immune system. They have improved the outcome for patients with various cancer types, such as melanoma. ICI-based therapy is frequently accompanied by immune-related adverse side effects (IRAEs).

Psychometric comparison of two short versions of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-4) in a representative sample of the German population.

Perceived stress is a construct of crucial importance to health and well-being, necessitating the provision of economic, psychometrically sound instruments to assess it in routine clinical practice and large-scale survey studies. Two competing short versions of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), each consisting of four items, have been proposed. In the present study, we compare the two in a sample representative of the German general population ( = 2,527).

Epidemiology and Genotype Dynamics of Dengue in Hospitalized Patients in Northern Vietnam Between 2020 and 2022.

Background: Arboviruses, including Dengue (DENV), Zika, and chikungunya, cause recurrent outbreaks of varying intensity in tropical countries. This study aimed to investigate other arboviruses, including Zika and chikungunya, in patients clinically suspected of Dengue and to characterize the circulating Dengue serotypes and genotypes in Northern Vietnam from 2020 to 2022. To date, information on this topic in the region has been limited.

Precursor sticking coefficient determination from indented deposits fabricated by electron beam induced deposition.

A fast simulation approach for focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) numerically solves the diffusion-reaction equation (continuum model) of the precursor surface on the growing nanostructure in conjunction with a Monte Carlo simulation for electron transport in the growing deposit. An important requirement in this regard is to have access to a methodology that can be used to systematically determine the values for the set of precursor parameters needed for this model. In this work we introduce such a method to derive the precursor sticking coefficient as one member of the precursor parameter set.

Application-based remote interstage home monitoring for infants with shunt- or duct-dependent pulmonary perfusion.

Objective: Interstage home monitoring (IHM) programs are considered standard of care after Norwood palliation and have led to substantial improvements in clinical outcomes. This study aims to evaluate an application-based remote IHM program for infants with shunt- or duct-dependent pulmonary circulation. The primary goals were to discharge infants from the hospital while minimizing mortality, optimizing somatic growth, and enhancing caregivers' confidence in the clinical management at home.

Three-dimensional aortic arch geometry and blood flow in neonates after surgical repair for aortic coarctation.

Background: Recurrent coarctation of the aorta (re-CoA) is a well-known although not fully understood complication after surgical repair, typically occurring in 10%-20% of cases within months after discharge.

Objectives: To (1) characterize geometry of the aortic arch and blood flow from pre-discharge magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in neonates after CoA repair; and (2) compare these measures between patients that developed re-CoA within 12 months after repair and patients who did not.

Methods: Neonates needing CoA repair, without associated major congenital heart defects, were included.

Introduction: Sex-related differences in the epidemiology of malignant gliomas are acknowledged; however, information regarding their clinical characteristics and outcomes after surgery is limited.

Research Question: To identify sex-specific differences of all patients with high-grade glioma at our institution and assessed clinical outcomes and prognostic factors.

Material And Methods: This single-center study included those who underwent surgery for malignant gliomas between 2010 and 2020.

Diagnostic and prognostic performance of urine ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 across multiple acute brain injury types - A longitudinal prospective cohort study.

Introduction: Ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1) is recognized as a diagnostic and prognostic blood biomarker for traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study aimed to evaluate whether UCH-L1 concentrations measured in patients' urine post-injury could serve as a diagnostic or prognostic biomarker for outcomes in various types of acute brain injuries (ABI).

Material And Methods: This pilot study included 46 ABI patients: aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (n = 22), ischemic stroke (n = 16), and traumatic brain injury (n = 8), along with three healthy controls.

Long term health outcomes in people with diabetes 12 months after hospitalisation with COVID-19 in the UK: a prospective cohort study.

Background: People with diabetes are at increased risk of hospitalisation, morbidity, and mortality following SARS-CoV-2 infection. Long-term outcomes for people with diabetes previously hospitalised with COVID-19 are, however, unknown. This study aimed to determine the longer-term physical and mental health effects of COVID-19 in people with and without diabetes.

Feasibility and potential diagnostic value of [F]PI-2620 PET in patients with down syndrome and Alzheimer's disease: a case series.

Purpose Of The Report: Adults with Down Syndrome (DS) have a substantially increased risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD) due to the triplicated amyloid-precursor-protein gene on chromosome 21, resulting in amyloid and tau accumulation. However, tau PET assessments are not sufficiently implemented in DS-AD research or clinical work-up, and second-generation tau tracers such as [F]PI-2620 have not been thoroughly characterized in adults with DS. We aim at illustrating feasibility and potential diagnostic value of tau PET imaging with [F]PI-2620 for the diagnosis of DS-AD.

Expanding the Scope of Microvascular Inflammation: Unveiling Its Presence Beyond Antibody-Mediated Rejection Into T-Cell Mediated Contexts.

Microvascular inflammation (MVI) in kidney transplant biopsies is mainly associated with antibody-mediated rejection (AMR), sparking debate within the Banff Classification of Renal Allograft Pathology regarding its exclusivity. This study reviewed the literature on MVI in T cell-mediated rejection (TCMR) and analyzed MVI in our transplant population. We searched English publications in MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Google Scholar until June 2024, focusing on glomerulitis (g), peritubular capillaritis (ptc), or MVI in kidney transplant biopsies classified as TCMR.

Here, we retrospectively evaluated the informational yield of 338 post-reperfusion kidney transplant biopsies (including 95 living donations) assessed according to BANFF for the histological characteristics interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy (IF/TA), glomerulosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, and acute tubular injury (ATI). Associations with delayed graft function (DGF) and death-censored graft survival were explored through Cox-regression analyses. The maximum follow-up time was 11.

Safety of brigatinib following alectinib-induced-pneumonitis: Case report.

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase tyrosine kinase inhibitors (ALK TKIs) show robust efficacy and has revolutionized the treatment of NSCLC patients harboring an ALK-rearrangement. Side effects, sometimes even serious such as pneumonitis, can occur with ALK TKIs. We report a case of a patient with ALK positive advanced NSCLC who developed pneumonitis during treatment with first-line alectinib.

The influence of different crosslinking agents onto the physical properties, integration behavior and immune response of collagen-based barrier membranes.

This study investigates the mechanical properties as well as and cyto- and biocompatibility of collagen membranes cross-linked with glutaraldehyde (GA), proanthocyanidins (PC), hexamethylendiisocyanate (HMDI) and 1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EC/NHS). A non-crosslinked membrane was used as reference control (RF). The initial cytotoxic analyses revealed that the PC, EC, and HMDI crosslinked membranes were cytocompatible, while the GA crosslinked membrane was cytotoxic and thus selected as positive control in the further study.

Impact of a national HPV vaccination programme for preadolescent girls on cytology screening performance and CIN2+ incidence: five-year population-based cervical screening results from Slovenia.

Background: HPV vaccination is most efficacious in preventing cervical cancer and its precursors when administered during preadolescence. Because in Slovenia women are invited for cytology screening from age 20, women targeted for preadolescent HPV vaccination have been screening-eligible since 2018. We aim to assess the impact of preadolescent HPV vaccination programme on cytology screening performance and CIN2+ incidence.

What is needed to successfully implement the EU HTA Regulation enabling broad patient access in Europe.

There has been a lot of discussion on the technical aspects of the soon to be implemented European Union's Health Technology Assessment (EU HTA) regulation. However, there has been limited discussion on the implementation aspects and the potential limitations from a policy perspective. In May 2024, a group of HTA experts with previous policy responsibilities met in Rome to propose some policy aspects to be considered.
