Background: This study assessed caliber and flow changes of covered cortical middle cerebral artery (MCA) branches using the new Caliber-Flow Status Scale (CFSS), postoperative diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) lesions, and clinical outcome following flow diverter (FD) treatment of MCA aneurysms.
Methods: This single-center retrospective study collected data from patients treated with FD between January 2016 and March 2024, including patient characteristics, aneurysm features, postoperative DWI lesions, and clinical outcomes. Vessel status was assessed using CFSS: 1a (normal caliber and flow), 1b (normal caliber, reduced flow), 2a (reduced caliber, normal flow), 2b (reduced caliber and flow), and 3 (occlusion).

Objective: Despite lack of evidence supporting efficacy, prophylactic fresh frozen plasma and Octaplas transfusions may be administered to very preterm infants to reduce bleeding risk. International variation in plasma transfusion practices in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) is poorly understood, therefore, we aimed to describe neonatal plasma transfusion practice in Europe.
Design: Prospective observational study.

The aim of this work is to provide a comprehensive set of biological tests to assess the biomedical potential of novel osteochondral scaffolds with methods proposed to comply with the 3Rs principle, focusing here on a biphasic Curdlan-based osteochondral scaffold as a promising model biomaterial. experiments include the evaluation of cytotoxicity, mutagenicity, and genotoxicity referring to ISO standards, the assessment of the viability and proliferation of human chondrocytes and osteoblasts, and the estimation of inflammation after direct contact of biomaterials with human macrophages. experiments include assessments of the response of the surrounding osteochondral tissue after incubation with the implanted biomaterial.

Background: Chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) is a common neurosurgical condition of growing importance due to the aging population and increasing use of antithrombotic agents. Due to the lack of guidelines, great variability is observed in the treatment of cSDH. We conducted a multicenter, nationwide survey to assess the differences in treatment across Germany in the context of surgical practices discussed in the literature.

Objectives: Trauma-induced coagulopathy (TIC) is common in severely injured patients and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality.
Method: The association of two parameters of blood gas analysis (hemoglobin [Hb], base excess [BE]) with standard coagulation tests (SCTs) and rotational thrombelastometry (ROTEM) using the database of the TraumaRegister DGU between 2015 and 2022 was studied. In a stepwise approach, the occurrence of a TIC, the correlations between Hb/BE levels and SCT, as well as ROTEM were calculated respectively.

Since their introduction by Mennen and Wiese in 1993, semi-occlusive film dressings (SOFD) have been increasingly used in various clinical contexts, including the treatment of Allen type IV fingertip injuries, fingertip necrosis, and cases involving embedded foreign material. This study aimed to investigate whether and, if so, how the outcomes of Allen type III and IV fingertip injuries and fingertip necrosis differ from those of Allen types I and II. In addition, it aimed to investigate if the presence of embedded foreign material under a film dressing increases the risk of complications.

Cerebrolysin (CBL) is a combination of neurotrophic peptides and amino acids derived from pig brains. CBL can cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and its biological effect is similar to the effect of endogenous neurotrophic effects. The mechanism of action of CBL is related to the induction of neurogenesis, neuroplasticity, neuroprotection, and neurotrophicity.

The amphibian metamorphosis assay (AMA) is an in vivo screen to assess potential interactions of chemicals with the amphibian thyroid system. Tadpoles are exposed for 21-days, then assessed for development and growth after 7 days and at test termination. This paper presents data from studies performed to satisfy test orders from the US EPA's Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program.

Curcumin, a hydrophobic drug derived from the rhizome of Curcuma longa, exhibits significant bioactive properties, including antioxidant and antimicrobial potential. However, its poor water solubility and rapid degradation limit its practical applications. This study presents a novel design of electrospun nanofibers using Curcumin/hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex (HP-β-CD-IC) combined with pullulan to enhance thermal stability and controlled release.

Psychotropic stimulants like methamphetamine (METH) have an impact on the physiology, behavior, and psychology of human beings and can damage the reproductive and neuroendocrine systems in them. These deleterious impacts include a temporary drop in the relative weight of the testis along with adverse effects on spermatogenesis. Sambucus nigra, also known as elderberry (EB) or sweet elder, is a source of bioactive compounds that has drawn growing attention for its potential beneficial impact in preventing and treating several diseases.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are increasingly common in sleep research, although the methodological quality level has been a matter of concern. Efforts towards methodological standardization are needed to ensure the reliability of sleep-related systematic reviews. The development of search strategies is a critical step in a systematic review, which often lead to methodological biases.

Bacterial surface polysaccharides are widely decorated with diverse rare functional groups. An understanding of the role of these functional groups in immunological activity of the glycans is required for the development of carbohydrate-based treatment against bacterial infectious diseases. Here, the antigenicity evaluation of synthetic trisaccharide 1 related to Plesiomonas shigelloides serotype O51 lipopolysaccharide (LPS) O-antigen and its acetamido derivative 2 was achieved to elucidate the immunological importance of O-antigen structure.

Waterlogging is a significant stressor for crops, particularly in lowland regions where soil conditions exacerbate the problem. Waterlogged roots experience hypoxia, disrupting oxidative phosphorylation and triggering metabolic reorganization to sustain energy production. Here, we investigated the metabolic aspects that differentiate two soybean sister lines contrasting for waterlogging tolerance.

In 1869, Friedrich Miescher, born in Basel, Switzerland, discovered a previously unknown phosphorus-rich substance in the nuclei of pus cells. Conducting his research in a laboratory set up in the kitchen of Tübingen's medieval castle in Germany, and under the guidance by Professor Felix Hoppe-Seyler, Miescher primarily focused on the composition of cell nuclei. He obtained nuclear material by washing pus cells from surgical bandages provided by a nearby hospital.
