Waterlogging is a significant stressor for crops, particularly in lowland regions where soil conditions exacerbate the problem. Waterlogged roots experience hypoxia, disrupting oxidative phosphorylation and triggering metabolic reorganization to sustain energy production. Here, we investigated the metabolic aspects that differentiate two soybean sister lines contrasting for waterlogging tolerance.

In 1869, Friedrich Miescher, born in Basel, Switzerland, discovered a previously unknown phosphorus-rich substance in the nuclei of pus cells. Conducting his research in a laboratory set up in the kitchen of Tübingen's medieval castle in Germany, and under the guidance by Professor Felix Hoppe-Seyler, Miescher primarily focused on the composition of cell nuclei. He obtained nuclear material by washing pus cells from surgical bandages provided by a nearby hospital.

Background: Gender is known to have a strong influence on human health and disease. Despite its relevance to treatment and outcome, gender is insufficiently considered in current health research. One hindering factor is the poor representation of gender information in clinical and health (meta) data.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) was used, next to green chemistry concepts, to compare the full environmental impacts of the epoxidation of a bio-based monomer, which can be used for the synthesis of vitrimers. On a laboratory scale, the synthesis of the monomer can either be done via a petrochemical route or via an enzymatic reaction pathway. Both reaction pathways were initially optimized to minimize the impact of suboptimal routes on the sustainability evaluation.

Background: The topic of the effect of the patient table on attenuation in myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) SPECT is gaining new relevance due to deep learning methods. Existing studies on this effect are old, rare and only consider phantom measurements, not patient studies. This study investigates the effect of the patient table on attenuation based on the difference between reconstructions of phantom scans and polar maps of patient studies.

The Orange Carotenoid Protein (OCP) is a unique water-soluble photoactive protein that plays a critical role in regulating the balance between light harvesting and photoprotective responses in cyanobacteria. The challenge in understanding OCP´s photoactivation mechanism stems from the heterogeneity of the initial configurations of its embedded ketocarotenoid, which in the dark-adapted state can form up to two hydrogen bonds to critical amino acids in the protein's C-terminal domain, and the extremely low quantum yield of primary photoproduct formation. While a series of experiments involving point mutations within these contacts helped us to identify these challenges, they did not resolve them.

Calreticulin (CALR) mutations are detected in around 20% of patients with primary and post-essential thrombocythemia myelofibrosis (MF). Regardless of driver mutations, patients with splenomegaly and symptoms are generally treated with JAK2-inhibitors, most commonly ruxolitinib. Recently, new therapies specifically targeting the CALR mutant clone have entered clinical investigation.

Graphdiyne (GDY) has been considered a promising electrode material for application in electrochemical energy storage. However, studies on GDY featuring an ordered interlayer stacking are lacking, which is supposed to be another effective way to increase lithium binding sites and diffusion pathways. Herein, we synthesized a hydrogen-substituted GDY (HsGDY) with a highly-ordered AA-stacking structure via a facile alcohol-thermal method.

The selective insertion of membrane-impermeant amphiphiles such as detergents, (lipo)peptides, drugs, etc. into the leaflet of a membrane causes an imbalance between the intrinsic areas of the and leaflet, referred to as asymmetry stress or differential stress. The literature provides individual mechanisms of how membranes respond to such stress, which are relevant to membrane remodeling processes and leakage phenomena.

Purpose: Self-testing has been proven to significantly improve not only simple learning outcomes, but also higher-order skills such as clinical reasoning in medical students. Previous studies have shown that self-testing was especially beneficial when it was presented with feedback, which leaves the question whether an immediate and personalized feedback further encourages this effect. Therefore, we hypothesised that individual feedback has a greater effect on learning outcomes, compared to generic feedback.
