Stable Operation of Copper-Protected La(FeMnSi)H Regenerators in a Magnetic Cooling Unit.

ACS Appl Eng Mater

January 2025

Magnotherm Solutions GmbH, Pfungstädter Straße 102, 64297 Darmstadt, Germany.

Magnetic refrigeration leads the current commercialization efforts of ambient caloric cooling technologies, is considered among its peers most promising in terms of anticipated energy efficiency gain, and allows for complete elimination of harmful coolants. By now, functional magnetocaloric components (so-called regenerators) based on Mn-substituted and hydrogenated LaFeSi alloys are commercially available. However, this alloy system exhibits magnetostriction, is susceptible to fracture, oxidation, and does not passivate well, rendering it prone to failure and corrosion, particularly when using water as favorable heat exchange medium.

Introduction: Anterior knee pain and other patello-femoral (PF) complications frequently limit the success of total knee arthroplasty as the final treatment of end stage osteoarthritis. However, knowledge about the loading conditions at the PF joint remains limited, as no direct measurements are available. We hypothesised that the external knee flexion moment (EFM) is highly predictive of the PF contact forces during activities with substantial flexion of the loaded knee.

Institute of Bioanalytical Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry and Mineralogy, Center for Biotechnology and Biomedicine, Leipzig University, Leipzig, Germany.

Because of the global spread of multi- and pan-resistant bacteria, there is a need to identify, research, and develop new strategies to combat these pathogens. In a previous proof-of-concept study, we presented an innovative strategy by genetically modifying lytic T7 bacteriophages. We integrated DNA fragments encoding for derivatives of the antimicrobial peptide (AMP) apidaecin into the phage genome to induce the production and release of apidaecin within the T7 infection cycle, thereby also targeting phage-resistant bacteria.

Whether individuals exhibit consistent behavioural variation is a central question in the field of animal behaviour. This question is particularly interesting in the case of social animals, as their behaviour may be strongly modulated by the collective. In this study, we ask whether honeybees exhibit individual differences in stinging behaviour.

Devonian ctenacanth chondrichthyans reached body sizes similar to modern great white sharks and therefore might have been apex predators of the Devonian seas. However, very little is known about the diet and feeding behaviours of these large ancestral sharks. To reconstruct their ecological properties, teeth of the large Famennian (Late Devonian) chondrichthyan from the Anti-Atlas, Morocco, were analysed.

Introduction: The novel object test is one of the three most common fear tests in veterinary science and employed in several different species. Although having been applied in several different studies in horses, it is surprising that there is no standardized test procedure available for these kinds of tests.

Methods: This study investigated the performance of the novel object test on 42 young Thoroughbred horses to determine the effect of sex (mare or stallion), test sites (round pen or paddock) and whether the horses had previously participated in an auction or not on the behavior during the novel object test.

Effects of UV-B light exposure during automatic milking on vitamin D levels in Holstein Friesian cows.

Front Vet Sci

January 2025

Clinic for Reproduction and Large Animals-Section for Ruminants, Veterinary Faculty, University of Ljubljana, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Vitamin D is essential for cattle and can be synthesized in the skin under ultraviolet irradiation. This study investigated the effects of narrow-band UV-B irradiation during automatic milking on blood vitamin D concentration and the influence of hair and black skin areas on cutaneous vitamin D synthesis in Holstein Friesian cows. Fifty-one cows were stratified by milk yield, days after calving, and percentage of black skin, then divided into three groups: shaved and irradiated (80 J/m), unshaved and irradiated (129-305 J/m), and a control group.

Introduction: Several studies showed that task interruptions at high mental workload moments are more harmful than task interruptions at low mental workload moments. In the present study, we used a theory-driven approach to define the mental workload during primary-task execution and to examine the effects of the interruption timing on primary-task performance.

Methods: Participants performed a primary task comprising a pre-defined sequence of six subtasks, with task interruptions occasionally occurring before the second, third, or fourth subtasks.

A Single-Chain-in-Mean-Field (SCMF) algorithm was introduced to study block copolymer electrolytes in nonequilibrium conditions. This method self-consistently combines a particle-based description of the polymer with a generalized diffusion equation for the ionic fluxes, thus exploiting the time scale separation between fast ion motion and the slow polymer relaxation and self-assembly. We apply this computational method to study ion fluxes in electrochemical cells containing poly(ethylene oxide)-polystyrene (PEO-PS) block copolymers with added lithium salt.
