Silicon photonics is a rapidly developing technology that promises to revolutionize the way we communicate, compute and sense the world. However, the lack of highly scalable, native complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-integrated light sources is one of the main factors hampering its widespread adoption. Despite considerable progress in hybrid and heterogeneous integration of III-V light sources on silicon, monolithic integration by direct epitaxy of III-V materials remains the pinnacle of cost-effective on-chip light sources.

The relation between d-wave superconductivity and stripes is fundamental to the understanding of ordered phases in high-temperature cuprate superconductors. These phases can be strongly influenced by anisotropic couplings, leading to higher critical temperatures, as emphasized by the recent discovery of superconductivity in nickelates. Quantum simulators with ultracold atoms provide a versatile platform to engineer such couplings and to observe emergent structures in real space with single-particle resolution.

Lung metastases occur in up to 54% of patients with metastatic tumours. Contributing factors to this high frequency include the physical properties of the pulmonary system and a less oxidative environment that may favour the survival of cancer cells. Moreover, secreted factors from primary tumours alter immune cells and the extracellular matrix of the lung, creating a permissive pre-metastatic environment primed for the arriving cancer cells.

The purpose of this article is to present three cases of a rare phenomenon called pre-eruptive coronal resorption (PCR), which occurs in teeth with enamel degeneration. In the first case, the enamel defects occurred due to ectodermal dysplasia, which represents the first documented case of a patient with ectodermal dysplasia who underwent PCR. In the other two cases, the enamel defects occurred due to amelogenesis imperfecta.

Ischaemic heart disease is a consequence of coronary atherosclerosis, and atherosclerosis is a systemic inflammatory disease. The spleen releases various immune cells in temporally distinct patterns. Neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, B cells and T cells execute innate and adaptive immune processes in the coronary atherosclerotic plaque and in the ischaemic myocardium.

Grapevine is an important economic fruit tree worldwide, but grape production has been plagued by a vast number of fungal diseases, which affect tree vigor and the quality and yield of berries. To seek remedies for such issues, researchers have always been committed to conventional and biotechnological breeding. In recent years, increasing progress has been made in elucidating the molecular mechanisms of grape-pathogenic fungi interactions and resistance regulation.

Background: Telemedicine applications are perceived as having great potential to address regional health service deficits. However, it is unclear to what extent telemedicine can actually contribute to ensuring care in medically underserved regions. The aim of this study is to prospectively identify underserved regions and to investigate the potential of telemedicine applications using teledermatology as an example.

Background: Strategies to counteract the impending and in some places already existing shortage of general practitioners (GPs) are being discussed in Germany. One approach could be to establish interprofessional teams in GP practices by integrating physician assistants (PAs).
Question: Can GPs imagine employing a PA in their practice and if so, under what conditions?
Methods: In March/April 2023, about 5,000 GPs in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), who work in a region with a care level of < 100 %, and about 1,000 GPs from Saxony-Anhalt were asked to take part in an online-based survey.

Background: In Germany, Eastern European live-in carers are filling a gap in home-based long-term care for older persons. As a care reality fraught with diverse problems, live-in care is an unregulated care format bordering between formal and informal structures and has so far received little attention from health services research. The aim of the qualitative study described here was to analyze the current discourses among stakeholders from care practice, politics, and associations, as well as the arguments contained therein regarding the status quo and future of live-in care.

Background: Risk-reducing mastectomy (RRM) significantly lowers breast cancer risk as a preventive surgery. While racial disparities in breast cancer treatment are well-documented, research on racial differences in the utilization and outcomes of RRM is limited.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (2008-2022) to identify women who underwent RRM.

Introduction: Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is a disease with a high impact on the quality of life of patients. There are some evaluations of the economic cost of the disease in developed countries, but there is little information about the economic cost of the disease in developing countries. Our aim was to assess the economic diagnostic and therapeutic expenses of CSU in five Latin American (LA) countries.

Quality control procedures play a pivotal role in ensuring the reliability and consistency of data generated in mass spectrometry-based proteomics laboratories. However, the lack of standardized quality control practices across laboratories poses challenges for data comparability and reproducibility. In response, we conducted a harmonization study within proteomics laboratories of the Core for Life alliance with the aim of establishing a common quality control framework, which facilitates comprehensive quality assessment and identification of potential sources of performance drift.

The ventromedial prefrontal cortex is widely linked with emotional phenomena, including appraisal, modulation, and reward processing. Its perigenual part is suggested to mediate the appetitive value of stimulation. In our previous study, besides changes in evoked MEG responses, we were able to induce an apparent behavioral bias toward more positive valence while interpreting the ambiguous, morphed faces after the effect of excitatory tDCS stimulation of the perigenual ventromedial cortex (pgVM).

Background: Depression is a serious health problem worldwide and is often associated with disability and reduced quality of life. In aging societies, early recognition of depression in older adults is highly relevant. Therefore, this study investigated the prevalence of depressive symptoms in individuals aged 50 and older with the aim to identify those at risk for major depression.

Background: Temporary mechanical circulatory support (tMCS) devices have become a standard treatment option in cardiogenic shock but are associated with high complication rates. This study analyzes common complications associated with modern tMCS devices and their impact on mortality depending on the tMCS approach.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective single-center analysis of patients with all-cause cardiogenic shock treated with veno-arterial extracorporeal life support, microaxial flow pump, and a combination of both (ECMELLA).

Background: For characterizing health states, fat distribution is more informative than overall body size. We used population-based whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to identify distinct body composition subphenotypes and characterize associations with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk.
Methods: Bone marrow, visceral, subcutaneous, cardiac, renal, hepatic, skeletal muscle and pancreatic adipose tissue were measured by MRI in n = 299 individuals from the population-based KORA cohort.

Bacteria frequently employ carbohydrate-binding proteins, so-called lectins, to colonize and persist in a host. Thus, bacterial lectins are attractive targets for the development of new antiinfectives. To find new potential targets for antiinfectives against pathogenic bacteria, we searched for homologs of Pseudomonas aeruginosa lectins and identified homologs of LecA in Enterobacter species.

Left bundle branch block (LBBB) causes immediate electrical and mechanical dys-synchrony of the left ventricle (LV) and gradual structural damages in the Purkinje cells and myocardium. Mechanical dys-synchrony reduces the LV ejection fraction (EF) instantly, but only to ≈55% in an otherwise normal heart. Because of the heart's in-built functional redundancy, a patient with LBBB does not always notice the heart's reduced efficiency straight away.
