Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most significant drivers of the global burden of disease and an increasing public health issue. Adequate monitoring and referral of high-risk patients to nephrologists are associated with improved management of CKD. We aimed to assess nephrology referral rates, monitoring of kidney function, and factors associated with failure to refer in Germany.

From the pioneering moment in 1987 when the insulinotropic effect of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) was first demonstrated in humans, to today's pharmaceutical gold rush for GLP-1-based treatments of obesity, the journey of GLP-1 pharmacology has been nothing short of extraordinary. The sequential conceptual developments of long-acting GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) mono-agonists, GLP-1R/glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor (GIPR) dual-agonists, and GLP-1R/GIPR/glucagon receptor (GcgR) triple agonists, have led to profound body weight-lowering capacities, with benefits that extend past obesity and towards obesity-associated diseases. The GLP-1R/GIPR dual-agonist tirzepatide has demonstrated a remarkable 23% body weight reduction in individuals with obesity over 72 weeks, eclipsing the average result achieved by certain types of bariatric surgery.

Introduction: The increasing prevalence of myopia worldwide is problematic because myopia can result in severe secondary pathologies, and is associated with considerable financial burden. With plenty of prevalence data available for some regions, current data for Europe remain sparse. Yet, information on myopia prevalence and associations is essential for monitoring, preventive and interventive purposes.

The scarcity of donors has prompted the growing utilization of steatotic livers, which are susceptible to injuries following orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). This study aims to assess the efficacy of multidrug donor preconditioning (MDDP) in alleviating injuries of steatotic grafts following rat OLT. Lean rats were subjected to a Western-style diet with high-fat (HF) and high-fructose (HFr) for 30 days to induce steatosis.

The European Forum for Research and Education in Allergy and Airways diseases (EUFOREA) organized the first European Biologic Training Course (EBTC) in Brussels on 1st March 2024. The aim of this hybrid EBTC including both face-to-face and web-based participation was to address the educational needs of physicians dealing with asthma and Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps (CRSwNP) on the clinically relevant aspects of diagnosing and treatment with biologics. EUFOREA is an international non-for-profit organization forming an alliance of all stakeholders dedicated to reducing the prevalence and burden of chronic respiratory diseases through the implementation of optimal patient care via educational, research, and advocacy activities.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) allows analyzing speech production by capturing high-resolution images of the dynamic processes in the vocal tract. In clinical applications, combining MRI with synchronized speech recordings leads to improved patient outcomes, especially if a phonological-based approach is used for assessment. However, when audio signals are unavailable, the recognition accuracy of sounds is decreased when using only MRI data.

Unlabelled: Industrial activities of a silk dyeing factory in Thalwil, on the shore of Lake Zurich, Switzerland, caused extreme Sn contamination of lake sediments. In this study, we determine the contamination source, spread, and age using a multiproxy approach. We used X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) core scanning and further geochemical analyses to assess the contamination spreading and thickness in the sedimentary column.

Introduction: Depressive disorders constitute a significant public health challenge. Health literacy might be an important factor to consider in prevention strategies for depressive disorders, which is why this study aimed at exploring the association between depressive symptom levels and severity and health literacy, along with additional sociodemographic factors.
Materials And Methods: Data were collected from two large samples of adults ( = 3,011) and adolescents ( = 1,021) representative of the German-speaking population in Germany.

Kell is one of the most complex blood group systems, with a highly polymorphic genetic background. Extensive allelic variations in the gene affect the encoded erythrocyte surface protein Kell. Genetic variants causing aberrant splicing, premature termination of protein translation, or specific amino acid exchanges lead to a variety of different phenotypes with altered Kell expression levels or changes in the antigenic properties of the Kell protein.

Lung cancer continues to be a major contributor to cancer-related deaths globally. Recent advances in immunotherapy have introduced promising treatments targeting T cell functionality. Central to the efficacy of these therapies is the role of T cells, which are often rendered dysfunctional due to continuous antigenic stimulation in the tumor microenvironment-a condition referred to as T cell exhaustion.

Background: Exposure-related changes in exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) and sputum eosinophils have not been thoroughly compared in the investigation of occupational asthma.
Objective: This study aimed at comparing the accuracies of the changes in FeNO concentrations and sputum eosinophil counts in identifying asthmatic reactions induced by occupational agents during specific inhalation challenges (SICs).
Methods: This retrospective multicenter study included 321 subjects who completed an assessment of FeNO and sputum eosinophils before and 24 h after SICs with various occupational agents, of whom 156 showed a positive result.

Ebola virus (EBOV) transcription is essentially regulated via dynamic dephosphorylation of its viral transcription activator VP30 by the host phosphatase PP2A. The nucleoprotein NP has emerged as a third key player in the regulation of this process by recruiting both the regulatory subunit B56 of PP2A and its substrate VP30 to initiate VP30 dephosphorylation and hence viral transcription. Both binding sites are located in close proximity to each other in NP's C-terminal disordered region.

Objective: Femoral neck fractures in the elderly are a global health issue, with the choice between cemented and uncemented hemiarthroplasty remaining a topic of debate. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to compare the effects of the two surgical options on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), mortality, and functional outcomes.
Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing cemented with uncemented hemiarthroplasty in patients aged 50 years and older with femoral neck fractures.

It is thought that cells surviving ionizing radiation exposure repair DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) and restore their genomes. However, the recent biochemical and genetic characterization of DSB repair pathways reveals that only homologous recombination (HR) can function in an error-free manner and that the non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) pathways canonical NHEJ (c-NHEJ), alternative end joining (alt-EJ), and single-strand annealing (SSA) are error-prone, and potentially leave behind genomic scars and altered genomes. The strong cell cycle restriction of HR to S/G2 phases and the unparalleled efficiency of c-NHEJ throughout the cell cycle, raise the intriguing question as to how far a surviving cell "reaches" after repairing the genome back to its pre-irradiation state.

Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMT2) promotes Achilles tendon (AS) degeneration and exercise could modulate features of DMT2. Hence, this study investigated whether tenocytes of non DMT2 and DMT2 rats respond differently to normo- (NG) and hyperglycemic (HG) conditions in the presence of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)α or cyclic stretch. AS tenocytes, isolated from DMT2 (fa/fa) or non DMT2 (lean, fa/+) adult Zucker Diabetic Fatty (ZDF) rats, were treated with 10 ng/mL TNFα either under NG or HG conditions (1 g/L vs.

In situ optical analytical spectroscopies offer great geochemical insights due to their capability to resolve the chemical composition of regolith surfaces of rocky celestial bodies. The use of suitable calibration targets improves the precision of mineral determination, which is of critical importance for short-living, low-mobility landers, and enables, in special cases, determination of elemental composition. We investigate the capabilities of three space-relevant optical analytical techniques used for in situ mineralogical analysis, i.
