: Post-hemicraniectomy patients often need extended intensive care treatment. While computed tomography (CT) is considered the gold standard for regular imaging, its frequent use could be linked to adverse clinical outcomes. This study aimed to assess bedside transcranial ultrasound (TUS) to capture intracranial anatomical structures and pathologies.

The Etiology of Total Knee Arthroplasty Failure Influences on Improvement in Knee Function: A Follow-Up Study.

J Clin Med

December 2024

Department of Orthopedics, Klinik Penzing, Wiener Gesundheitsverbund, 1140 Vienna, Austria.

Outcomes following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) revisions are variable, and it is hypothesized that the underlying cause of primary TKA failure impacts postoperative outcomes. This study analyzes the results of TKA revisions seven years after surgery, in relation to the etiology of primary failure and other influencing factors. A previous study conducted in 2013 examined the same cohort of patients three months after revision surgery.

The clinical course of patients with aneurysmal SAH (aSAH) is often dynamic and highly unpredictable. Since its management varies between hospitals despite guidelines, this survey aimed to assess the current state of intensive care treatment for aSAH in the German-speaking region and provide insights that could aid standardization of care for aSAH patients in the intensive care setting. From February 2023 to April 2023, medical professionals of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI), the Initiative of German Neuro-Intensive Trial Engagement (IGNITE) network and manually recorded clinics with intensive care units were invited to participate in a standardized anonymous online questionnaire including 44 questions.

: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) can cause characteristic electrocardiographic (ECG) changes due to right ventricular hypertrophy and/or strain. The aims of the present study were to explore the diagnostic accuracy of ECG parameters for the diagnosis of PH, applying the recently adjusted mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) threshold of >20 mmHg, and to determine the role of "R V1, V2 + S I, aVL - S V1". : Between July 2012 and November 2023, 100 patients without PH, with pulmonary arterial hypertension, or with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension were retrospectively enrolled.

Short-stem total hip arthroplasty (THA) has gained popularity due to its bone-sparing technique, but its outcomes in patients with obesity remain uncertain. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of obesity on postoperative subsidence and clinical outcomes after short-stem THA. A retrospective cohort study with a minimum follow-up of 24 months was conducted on 163 patients who underwent short-stem THA with a collarless, triple-tapered, cementless stem achieving fixation in the metaphyseal region.

: The current classification of pulmonary hypertension (PH) distinguishes between pre-capillary (PAWP ≤ 15 mmHg) and post-capillary (PAWP > 15 mmHg) forms, with left heart disease, especially heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), being a common cause of PH. We investigated the suitability of an HFpEF diagnosis instead of PAWP in diagnosing PH associated with HFpEF. : In a retrospective, single-center analysis, we reviewed diagnoses from our database, focusing on patients initially diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) or PH associated with HFpEF (PH-HFpEF) based on their PAWP.

Learnability of Ultrasound-Guided Locoregional Anesthesia for Carotid Endarterectomy.

J Clin Med

December 2024

Department of Anesthesiology, Heidelberg University Hospital, Medical Faculty, University of Heidelberg, 69120 Heidelberg, Germany.

: There is an ongoing debate about the most advantageous anesthesia technique for carotid endarterectomy (CEA). From an anesthesiologic perspective, locoregional anesthesia (LRA) appears to offer significant benefits. However, the learning curve and complication rates for anesthesiologists newly performing ultrasound-guided LRA for CEA remain unclear and are to be examined in greater detail in this study.

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is the most common joint disease, characterized by the degeneration of joint cartilage. Intra-articular hyaluronic acid (IAHA) injections are a well-established non-surgical treatment. This retrospective study analyzed knee OA patients receiving IAHA combined with niacinamide injections, assessing pain reduction in relation to patient data, the number of injections, and radiological findings.

Higher intraoperative opioid doses may be associated with worse long-term oncological outcomes after radical prostatectomy (RP) for prostate cancer. We aimed to evaluate the impact of higher doses of intraoperative opioids and type of anesthesia on biochemical recurrence (BCR) and mortality after RP in a high-volume tertiary center. All patients underwent RP at our center between 2015 and 2021.

Astrobiology Group, Center of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Technical University Berlin, 10623 Berlin, Germany.

This study investigates the effects of three Martian-relevant salts-sodium chlorate, sodium perchlorate, and sodium chloride-on the viability and motility of , a model organism for understanding microbial responses to environmental stress. These salts are abundant on Mars and play a crucial role in forming brines, one of the few sources of stable liquid water on the planet. We analyze the survivability under different salt concentrations using colony plating.

The present study investigates the influence of nitrosamines and etoposide on mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in a differentiation state- and biological age-dependent manner. The genotoxic effects of the agents on both neonatal and adult stem cell populations after treatment, before, or during the course of differentiation, and the sensitivity of the different MSC types to different concentrations of MNU or etoposide were assessed. Hereby, the multipotent differentiation capacity of MSCs into osteoblasts, adipocytes, and chondrocytes was analyzed.
