Nomenclature in Palliative and Kidney Supportive Care: Not Just at the End-of-Life.

The multidimensional view of disease is fundamental in the care of complex diseases such as chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is appropriate to define and unify concepts that allow the different professionals involved in care to provide a multidisciplinary approach tailored to the needs of each individual. Given the increasing incidence of CKD worldwide and the fact that the disease may progress at different rates, there is a need to establish personalized, comprehensive approaches for each patient and their families at an earlier stage.

A dual colorimetric-electrochemical microfluidic paper-based analytical device for point-of-care testing of ischemic strokes.

A novel microfluidic paper-based analytical device with dual colorimetric and electrochemical detection (dual μPAD) was developed for the assessment of transferrin saturation (TSAT) in samples from ischemic stroke patients. TSAT was calculated from the ratio between transferrin-bound iron, which was colorimetrically measured, and the total iron-binding capacity, which was electrochemically measured. To this end, a μPAD was smartly designed, which integrated both colorimetric and electrochemical detection reservoirs, communicating a microchannel acting as a chemical reactor, and with preloading/storing capabilities (reagent-free device).

Dupilumab treatment in paediatric atopic dermatitis (2-18 years): Spanish multicentre retrospective real-world study.

Background: Moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD) can be difficult to manage in paediatric patients, and there are few licensed treatments available for this age group. Dupilumab is approved for the treatment of AD in children older than 6 months.

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness and safety of dupilumab in a real-world cohort of paediatric patients with AD in Spain.

A genetic and proteomic comparison of key AD biomarkers across tissues.

Introduction: Plasma has been proposed as an alternative to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for measuring Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers, but no studies have analyzed in detail which biofluid is more informative for genetics studies of AD.

Method: Eleven proteins associated with AD (α-synuclein, apolipoprotein E [apoE], CLU, GFAP, GRN, NfL, NRGN, SNAP-25, TREM2, VILIP-1, YKL-40) were assessed in plasma (n = 2317) and CSF (n = 3107). Both plasma and CSF genome-wide association study (GWAS) analyses were performed for each protein, followed by functional annotation.

Deciphering the impact of STAT3 activation mediated by PTPRT promoter hypermethylation as biomarker of response to paclitaxel-plus-cetuximab in patients with recurrent or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.

Background: Squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) is an aggressive disease with poor prognosis. It is known that the activation of STAT3 signaling pathways promotes the development and progression of this neoplasia and it has been described the role of PTPRT as a negative regulator of STAT3. Then, we have evaluated the impact of them as biomarkers of outcome in a series of patients with recurrent and/or metastatic SCCHN treated with weekly paclitaxel-plus-cetuximab (ERBITAX) regimen.

Long COVID: cognitive, balance, and retina manifestations.

Background: The neurological symptoms of Long COVID (LC) and the impact of neuropsychological manifestations on people's daily lives have been extensively described. Although a large body of literature describes symptoms, validating this with objective measures is important. This study aims to identify and describe the effects of Long COVID on cognition, balance, and the retinal fundus, and determine whether the duration of symptoms influences cognitive impairment.

Consensus Statement from the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV) Psoriasis Working Group (SWG) and Pediatric Working Group (PWG) on the Management of Pediatric Psoriasis.

Justification And Objectives: The Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV) Psoriasis and Pediatric Working Groups (PSW and PWG) have developed a set of recommendations for the management of pediatric psoriasis based on the best available evidence and experts' opinion.

Methodology: The methodology of nominal groups was followed, with help from a scoping review. A coordinator was designated, and a group of experts was selected based on their experience and knowledge on the management of psoriasis.

Role of Cardiac Biomarkers in Stroke and Cognitive Impairment.

This topical review assesses the growing role of cardiac biomarkers beyond cardiovascular health and focuses on their importance in stroke and dementia. The first part describes blood-based cardiac biomarkers in patients with stroke and highlights applications in the setting of early diagnosis, poststroke complications, outcome prediction as well as secondary prevention. Among other applications, natriuretic peptides can be helpful in differentiating stroke subtypes.

Exceptional, naturally occurring HIV-1 control: Insight into a functional cure.

Exceptional elite controllers represent an extremely rare group of people with HIV-1 (PWH) who exhibit spontaneous, high-level control of viral replication below the limits of detection in sensitive clinical monitoring assays and without disease progression in the absence of antiretroviral therapy for prolonged periods, frequently exceeding 25 years. Here, we discuss the different cases that have been reported in the scientific literature, their unique genetic, virological, and immunological characteristics, and their relevance as the best model for the functional cure of HIV-1.

Adherence to Supervised and Unsupervised Exercise Programmes in Ageing Population with Intermittent Claudication: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

: Intermittent Claudication symptomatic peripheral arterial disease (ICSPAD) is associated with reduced mobility, functional capacity, and quality of life. Physical exercise is an effective non-pharmacological intervention for the management of ICSPAD. Adherence to exercise programs is challenging, due to the nature of the disease and the complex comorbidities associated with it.

Microbiota and Resveratrol: How Are They Linked to Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis (OP), which is characterized by a decrease in bone density and increased susceptibility to fractures, is closely linked to the gut microbiota (GM). It is increasingly realized that the GM plays a key role in the maintenance of the functioning of multiple organs, including bone, by producing bioactive metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). Consequently, imbalances in the GM, referred to as dysbiosis, have been identified with a significant reduction in beneficial metabolites, such as decreased SCFA associated with increased chronic inflammatory processes, including the activation of NF-κB at the epigenetic level, which is recognized as the main cause of many chronic diseases, including OP.

Personalized Medicine in Acromegaly: The ACROFAST Study.

Determinants of Repeating an HIV Test Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who have Sex with Men, and Transgender People Who Use an Online-Requested Self-Sampling Program and Attending Community-Based Testing Venues in Spain (2018-2021).

Our aims were: (1) to characterize gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) and transgender (TG) populations using internet-based self-sampling services in the TESTATE project or attending community-based STI/HIV voluntary counselling and testing (CBVCT) services as alternative strategies to formal HIV testing within the Spanish national health system, and (2) to identify factors associated with repeat use of the same screening strategy from November 2018 to December 2021. Demographic, health, and behavioral characteristics of users using complementary strategies were analyzed. We developed a cross-sectional study, with descriptive analysis, HIV cascade, and a multivariate logistic model to identify factors associated with participants' repeated use of the same screening strategy.

The Link between Abdominal Obesity Indices and the Progression of Liver Fibrosis: Insights from a Population-Based Study.

There is currently no available information on the correlation between abdominal obesity indices and the risk of liver fibrosis progression. We aimed to investigate the relationship between the body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and the visceral adiposity index (VAI) with the progression of liver fibrosis. The study also evaluated the association between these indices and the prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and liver fibrosis.

Decoding depression by exploring the exposome-genome edge amidst COVID-19 lockdown.

Risk of depression increased in the general population after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. By examining the interplay between genetics and individual environmental exposures during the COVID-19 lockdown, we have been able to gain an insight as to why some individuals are more vulnerable to depression, while others are more resilient. This study, conducted on a Spanish cohort of 9218 individuals (COVICAT), includes a comprehensive non-genetic risk analysis, the exposome, complemented by a genomics analysis in a subset of 2442 participants.

Immune responses associated with mpox viral clearance in men with and without HIV in Spain: a multisite, observational, prospective cohort study.

Background: Since the emergence of the global mpox outbreak in May, 2022, more than 90 000 cases have been diagnosed across 110 countries, disproportionately affecting people with HIV. The durability of mpox-specific immunity is unclear and reinfections have been reported. We aimed to compare mpox immune responses up to 6 months after diagnosis in participants with and without HIV and assess their effect on disease severity and viral clearance dynamics.
