Article Synopsis
  • * A systematic search identified 37 studies, but only 16 met the inclusion criteria for the meta-analysis, revealing limited data for specific markers like albumin and the albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR).
  • * The findings highlighted inconsistencies in sample collections and reporting units across BV studies, emphasizing the necessity for more compliant research to better assess the risk of chronic kidney disease.

Background: Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-low has emerged as a potential new entity in breast cancer (BC). Data on this subset are limited, and prognostic results are controversial, evidencing the need of further data in a BC real-world cohort.

Methods: Patients with HER2-negative stage I-III BC diagnosed between 2006 and 2016 were retrospectively reviewed in a single cohort from the Catalan Institute of Oncology Badalona.

A fluorescence antibody microarray has been developed for the determination of relevant cardiovascular disease biomarkers for the analysis of human plasma samples. Recording characteristic protein molecular fingerprints to assess individual's states of health could allow diagnosis to go beyond the simple identification of the disease, providing information on its stage or prognosis. Precisely, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are complex disorders which involve different degenerative processes encompassing a collection of biomarkers related to disease progression or stage.

Soluble mutant huntingtin drives early human pathogenesis in Huntington's disease.

Laboratory of Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine, Department of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an incurable inherited brain disorder characterised by massive degeneration of striatal neurons, which correlates with abnormal accumulation of misfolded mutant huntingtin (mHTT) protein. Research on HD has been hampered by the inability to study early dysfunction and progressive degeneration of human striatal neurons in vivo. To investigate human pathogenesis in a physiologically relevant context, we transplanted human pluripotent stem cell-derived neural progenitor cells (hNPCs) from control and HD patients into the striatum of new-born mice.

Neoadjuvant treatment (NAT) is one of the most widely used options for HER2+ and triple negative (TN) early breast cancer (BC). Since around half of the patients treated with NAT do not achieve a pathologically complete response (pCR), biomarkers to predict resistance are urgently needed. The correlation of clinicopathological factors with pCR was studied in 150 patients (HER2 = 81; TN = 69) and pre- and post-NAT differences in tumour biomarkers were compared.

Objectives: Biological variation data (BV) can be used for different applications, but this depends on the availability of robust and relevant BV data. In this study, we aimed to summarize and appraise BV studies for tumor markers, to examine the influence of study population characteristics and concentrations on BV estimates and to discuss the applicability of BV data for tumor markers in clinical practice.

Methods: Studies reporting BV data for tumor markers related to gastrointestinal, prostate, breast, ovarian, haematological, lung, and dermatological cancers were identified by a systematic literature search.

ISO 15189:2012 establishes the requirements for clinical sample management, ensuring quality of process and laboratory information management. The accreditation authority, ENAC in Spain, established the requirements for the authorized use of the label in reports issued by accredited laboratories. These recommendations are applicable to the postanalytical processes and the professionals involved.

Cancer patients with severe renal dysfunction represent a challenge for the physician. This is the first case report on the use of denosumab in a dialysis patient with bone metastases. We present the clinical case of a 45-year-old woman who had hepatorenal polycystic disease, diagnosed during childhood, and stage IV chronic kidney failure at the time of breast cancer diagnosis.

Objectives: The primary objective was to evaluate the improvement in neuropsychiatric symptoms attributed to an antiretroviral drug after that drug was substituted with nevirapine. The secondary objective was to evaluate the impact on patient adherence and quality of life.

Methods: A prospective, observational study was carried out that included patients with HIV-1 plasma suppression for whom an antiretroviral drug was substituted with nevirapine because of central nervous system (CNS) side effects, a Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score > 5 or a Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) score ≥ 10, and who had not initiated psychoactive drug treatment during the prior 6 weeks.

Metabolic syndrome and resistance to IV thrombolysis in middle cerebral artery ischemic stroke.

Neurology

July 2008

Department of Neurosciences, Stroke Unit, Germans Trias i Pujol Universitary Hospital, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Carretera del Canyet, 08916 Badalona, Barcelona, Spain.

Objective: The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of vascular risk factors associated with a prothrombotic state. We aimed to evaluate the impact of MetS on the response to systemic tPA treatment in patients with acute middle cerebral artery (MCA) ischemic stroke.

Methods: We studied 100 consecutive patients with ischemic stroke with MCA occlusions on prebolus transcranial Doppler (TCD) examination treated with tPA following SITS-MOST criteria.

Purpose: The main objective of the study was to evaluate patients' adherence to a fixed dose combination containing abacavir, zidovudine, and lamivudine (TZV) and to evaluate whether TZV might improve general satisfaction and quality of life (QOL) with anti-HIV treatment.

Method: Patients with viral load (VL) <400 copies switched their antiretroviral therapy to TZV. Adherence was assessed by patient self-report and medication accountability at week 24.
