One way to treat diabetes mellitus type II is by using α-glucosidase inhibitor, that will slow down the postprandial glucose intake. Metabolomics analysis of Artabotrys sumatranus leaf extract was used in this research to predict the active compounds as α-glucosidase inhibitors from this extract. Both multivariate statistical analysis and machine learning approaches were used to improve the confidence of the predictions.

The intersection of electromagnetic radiation and neuronal communication, focusing on the potential role of biophoton emission in brain function and neurodegenerative diseases is an emerging research area. Traditionally, it is believed that neurons encode and communicate information via electrochemical impulses, generating electromagnetic fields detectable by EEG and MEG. Recent discoveries indicate that neurons may also emit biophotons, suggesting an additional communication channel alongside the regular synaptic interactions.

Chronological lifespan (CLS) in budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is defined as the time nondividing cells in saturation remain viable, has been utilized as a model to study post-mitotic aging in mammalian cells. CLS is closely related to entry into and maintenance of a quiescent state. Many rearrangements that direct the quiescent state enhance the ability of cells to endure several types of stress.

Fatigue is the most prevalent symptom within the post-COVID condition (PCC). Furthermore, many patients suffer from decreased physical performance capacity and post-exertional malaise. Although exercise has been proposed as an effective therapeutic strategy for PCC, there is limited evidence on individualised and symptom-titrated exercise interventions in patients with fatigue and PEM.

The utilization of human cDNA libraries in yeast genetic screens is an approach that has been used to identify novel gene functions and/or genetic and physical interaction partners through forward genetics using yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) and classical cDNA library screens. Here, we summarize several challenges that have been observed during the implementation of human cDNA library screens in Saccharomyces cerevisiae (budding yeast). Upon the utilization of DNA repair deficient-yeast strains to identify novel genes that rescue the toxic effect of DNA-damage inducing drugs, we have observed a wide range of transcripts that could rescue the strains.

Laves phases are an interesting field of research when it comes to structural chemistry and physical properties. Investigations of the ternary system Zr-V-Al showed, in contrast to the system Hf-V-Al, that no superstructures can be observed within the solid solution Zr(V1-xAlx)2. High values of x form aluminum rich phases that adopt the hexagonal MgZn2 type structure while low values of x lead to vanadium rich phases that adopt the cubic MgCu2 type.

More than 4,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) variants have been identified in the human gene, however only a few have been studied in the context of protein function. The tandem zinc finger domain of ZFP36L2, an RNA binding protein, is the functional domain that binds to its target mRNAs. This protein/RNA interaction triggers mRNA degradation, controlling gene expression.

Exploring sperm cell motion dynamics: Insights from genetic algorithm-based analysis.

Comput Struct Biotechnol J

December 2024

Department of Biomechanical Engineering, University of Twente, Twente, 7500 AE, the Netherlands.

Accurate analysis of sperm cell flagellar dynamics plays a crucial role in understanding sperm motility as flagella parameters determine cell behavior in the spatiotemporal domain. In this study, we introduce a novel approach by harnessing Genetic Algorithms (GA) to analyze sperm flagellar motion characteristics and compare the results with the traditional decomposition method based on Fourier analysis. Our analysis focuses on extracting key parameters of the equation approximating flagellar shape, including beating period time, bending amplitude, mean curvature, and wavelength.

December 2024

RAM-Robotics and Mechatronics, University of Twente, Enschede, 7500 AE, the Netherlands.

Magnetically actuated soft microrobots hold promise for biomedical applications that necessitate precise control and adaptability in complex environments. These microrobots can be accurately steered below their step-out frequencies where they exhibit synchronized motion with external magnetic fields. However, the step-out frequencies of soft microrobots have not been investigated yet, as opposed to their rigid counterparts.

December 2024

Biochemistry Department, Faculty of Pharmacy and Biotechnology, German University in Cairo (GUC), New Cairo, Egypt.

Gasotransmitters play crucial roles in regulating many physiological processes, including cell signaling, cellular proliferation, angiogenesis, mitochondrial function, antioxidant production, nervous system functions and immune responses. Hydrogen sulfide (HS) is the most recently identified gasotransmitter, which is characterized by its biphasic behavior. At low concentrations, HS promotes cellular bioenergetics, whereas at high concentrations, it can exert cytotoxic effects.

Department of Robotics and Intelligent Systems, Institute of Graduate Studies in Science and Engineering, Turkish-German University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • This research focuses on improving gait analysis for patients with cerebral palsy (CP) by predicting ground reaction forces (GRF) using kinematic data instead of traditional force plates.
  • A convolutional neural network approach was used to analyze a large dataset containing both typically developed individuals and CP patients, achieving promising accuracy in GRF prediction.
  • While the study shows machine learning's potential for this application, there are limitations, such as the need for further model improvements and the lack of upper limb data that affect immediate clinical use.

Recently, our research group reported an upregulated expression profile of cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE) and cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), key enzymes involved in hydrogen sulfide (HS) production, in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying such altered expression patterns are not yet fully understood. In this study, we focused on the role of the STAT3/CSE/HS axis and the potential involvement of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), including long and short ncRNAs, in modulating this pivotal pathway.

This paper investigates the flexural bearing behavior of reinforced concrete beams through experimental analysis and advanced machine learning predictive models. The primary problem centers around understanding how varying compositions of construction materials, particularly the inclusion of recycled aggregates and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), affect the structural performance of concrete beams. Eight beams, including those with natural aggregates, recycled aggregates, fly ash, and CFRP, were tested.

Transdermal drug delivery systems are a promising option for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) because they can lower systemic adverse effects of immunosuppressants. Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors were found to be effective for the treatment of RA by inhibiting the JAK-STAT pathway and preventing autoimmune joint destruction. The aim of this study is to deliver tofacitinib (a JAK 1 and 3 inhibitor) through mannose-decorated transferosomes (MDTs) directly to inflamed joints.

Phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors are primarily used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension, but have also been reported to have a potential therapeutic effect for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This is likely to be through stimulation of nitric oxide (NO)/cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) signaling by elevating cGMP, a secondary messenger involved in processes of neuroplasticity. In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy of a novel PDE5 inhibitor, RF26, using P301S tauopathy mice model.
