Bio-imaging is a tedious task when it concerns exploring cell functions, developmental mechanisms, and other vital processes in vivo. Single-cell resolution is challenging due to different issues such as sample size, the scattering of intact and opaque tissue, pigmentation in untreated animals, the movement of living organs, and maintaining the sample under physiological conditions. These factors might lead researchers to implement microscopy techniques with a suitable animal model to mimic the nature of the living cells.

Deep Proteomic Insights into the Individual Short-Term Pellicle Formation on Enamel-An In Situ Pilot Study.

Proteomics Clin Appl

May 2020

Clinic of Operative Dentistry, Periodontology and Preventive Dentistry, University Hospital, Saarland University, Homburg/Saar, 66421, Germany.

Purpose: Dental pellicle formation starts instantaneously after oral hygiene due to the adsorption of salivary proteins to all orally exposed surfaces. The pellicle acts as a physiological mediator, protects the tooth surface from mechanical damages and reduces acid-induced enamel demineralization. The aim of this pilot study is to identify and characterize individual proteomic profiles of the initial pellicle formed on dental enamel and to compare the profiles with the corresponding saliva to analyze specific adsorption patterns occurring during pellicle formation.

Applied Physics Department, Faculty of Computer Science, Engineering, University of Castilla-La Mancha, Avda. de España s/n, Campus Universitario, 02071 Albacete, Spain.

In the last two decades, due to the development of the information society, the massive increase in the use of information technologies, including the connection and communication of multiple electronic devices, highlighting Wi-Fi networks, as well as the emerging technological advances of 4G and 5G (new-generation mobile phones that will use 5G), have caused a significant increase in the personal exposure to Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields (RF-EMF), and as a consequence, increasing discussions about the possible adverse health effects. The main objective of this study was to measure the personal exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields from the Wi-Fi in the university area of German Jordanian University (GJU) and prepare georeferenced maps of the registered intensity levels and to compare them with the basic international restrictions. Spot measurements were made outside the university area at German Jordanian University.

Purpose: Ultrasound imaging is used in many minimally invasive needle insertion procedures to track the advancing needle, but localizing the needle in ultrasound images can be challenging, particularly at steep insertion angles. Previous methods have been introduced to localize the needle in ultrasound images, but the majority of these methods are based on ultrasound B-mode image analysis that is affected by the needle visibility. To address this limitation, we propose a two-phase, signature-based method to achieve reliable and accurate needle localization in curvilinear ultrasound images based on the beamformed radio frequency (RF) signals that are acquired using conventional ultrasound imaging systems.

The fabrication and testing of microfluidic spinning compact discs with embedded trapezoidal microchambers for the purpose of inertial microparticle focusing is reported in this article. Microparticle focusing channels require small features that cannot be easily fabricated in acrylic sheets and are complicated to realize in glass by traditional lithography techniques; therefore, the fabrication of microfluidic discs with femtosecond laser ablation is reported for the first time in this paper. It could be demonstrated that high-efficiency inertial focusing of 5 and 10 µm particles is achieved in a channel with trapezoidal microchambers regardless of the direction of disc rotation, which correlates to the dominance of inertial forces over Coriolis forces.

Evidence is accumulating to challenge the paradigm that biogenic methanogenesis, considered a strictly anaerobic process, is exclusive to archaea. We demonstrate that cyanobacteria living in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments produce methane at substantial rates under light, dark, oxic, and anoxic conditions, linking methane production with light-driven primary productivity in a globally relevant and ancient group of photoautotrophs. Methane production, attributed to cyanobacteria using stable isotope labeling techniques, was enhanced during oxygenic photosynthesis.
