Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is an incurable disease accounting for almost one-third of leukemias in the Western world. Aberrant expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) is a well-established characteristic of CLL, and the robust nature of miRNAs makes them eminently suitable liquid biopsy biomarkers. Using a nested case-control study within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), the predictive values of five promising human miRNAs (hsa-miR-16-5p, hsa-miR-29a-3p, hsa-miR-150-5p, hsa-miR-155-5p and hsa-miR-223-3p), identified in a pilot study, were examined in serum of 224 CLL cases (diagnosed 3 months to 18 years after enrollment) and 224 matched controls using Taqman based assays.

Theoretical accounts propose honesty as a central determinant of trustworthiness impressions and trusting behavior. However, behavioral and neural evidence on the relationships between honesty and trust is missing. Here, combining a novel paradigm that successfully induces trustworthiness impressions with functional MRI and multivariate analyses, we demonstrate that honesty-based trustworthiness is represented in the posterior cingulate cortex, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and intraparietal sulcus.

The formation of DNA adducts is considered essential for tumor initiation. Quantification of DNA adducts may be achieved by various techniques of which LC-MS/MS-based multiple reaction monitoring has become the most prominent in the past decade. Adducts of single nucleosides are analyzed following enzymatic break-down of a DNA sample following adduct enrichment usually by solid-phase extraction.

In our information-rich environment, the gaze direction of another indicates their current focus of attention. Following the gaze of another, results in gaze-evoked shifts in joint attention, a phenomenon critical for the functioning of social cognition. Previous research in joint attention has shown that objects that are attended by another are more liked than ignored objects.

The prevalence of obesity and its co-morbidities such as insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes are tightly linked to increased ingestion of palatable fat enriched food. Thus, it seems intuitive that the brain senses elevated amounts of fatty acids (FAs) and affects adaptive metabolic response, which is connected to mitochondrial function and insulin signaling. This review will address the effect of dietary FAs on brain insulin and mitochondrial function with a special emphasis on the impact of different FAs on brain function and metabolism.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers conducted a comprehensive study on colorectal cancer (CRC) by sequencing the genomes of over 1,400 CRC cases and 720 controls, ultimately analyzing data from nearly 125,000 individuals.
  • They found a significant protective variant at the CHD1 gene and identified 40 new genetic signals associated with CRC, highlighting the involvement of low-frequency variants and various biological pathways.
  • The study indicates that CRC risk is influenced by many genes and suggests that further research, especially on rare variants, could enhance understanding of CRC and shape personalized treatment and screening efforts.

The incidence of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) increases with age and mortality exceeds 90% when diagnosed after age 65. Most cases arise without any detectable early symptoms and patients usually present with the acute complications of bone marrow failure. The onset of such de novo AML cases is typically preceded by the accumulation of somatic mutations in preleukaemic haematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) that undergo clonal expansion.
