Background: Exergames are interactive technology-based exercise programs. By combining physical and cognitive training components, they aim to preserve independence in older adults and reduce their risk of falling. This study explored whether primary end users (PEU, healthy older adults and patients with neurological and geriatric diagnoses) and secondary end users (SEU, health professionals) evaluated the ExerG functional model to be usable, providing a positive experience and therefore acceptable.

Swift induction of human spinal lower motor neurons and robust ALS cell screening via single-cell imaging.

Stem Cell Reports

December 2024

Keio University Regenerative Medicine Research Center, Kanagawa 210-0821, Japan; Division of Neurodegenerative Disease Research, Tokyo Metropolitan Institute for Geriatrics and Gerontology, Tokyo 173-0015, Japan. Electronic address:

This study introduces a novel method for rapidly and efficiently inducing human spinal lower motor neurons (LMNs) from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to eventually elucidate the pathomechanisms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and facilitate drug screening. Previous methods were limited by low induction efficiency, poor LMN purity, or labor-intensive induction and evaluation processes. Our protocol overcomes these challenges, achieving around 80% induction efficiency within just two weeks by combining a small molecule-based approach with transcription factor transduction.

Objectives: This study aimed to explore the association of perioperative geriatric management (PGM) in major orthopedic surgeries.

Methods: One hundred seventy-five participants aged 75 and older were in-hospital patients who underwent major orthopedic surgery from September 2020 to September 2021, and they received PGM and necessary treatment for indicators with abnormal value (the PGM group). Another 175 participants in the control group only received the evaluation part of the PGM, recruited by filtering in the electronic medical record system from March 2016 to March 2017.

Objective: The optimal approach for improving physical function following acute hospitalization is unknown. A recent clinical trial of home health physical therapy compared a high-intensity, progressive, multi-component (PMC) intervention to enhanced usual care (EUC). While both groups improved in physical function, no between-group differences were observed.

Objectives: Reduced physical function following hospitalization places older adults at risk of adverse health events. Many older adults receive home health physical therapy to reverse their deconditioning; however, optimal approaches to improve physical function are currently not known. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a home health care approach comprised of high-intensity exercise, enhanced care transition, and protein supplementation.

Background And Objectives: Action observation treatment (AOT) is a novel rehabilitation approach aimed to the recovery of both motor and linguistic deficits in subjects with brain lesions. The aim of the present randomized controlled study was to assess the benefits of AOT treatment in the activities of daily living (ADLs) and in the linguistic abilities of the patients with Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) at mild-moderate stage (Hoehn & Yahr's stage scale: 2-3).

Methods: Twenty patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to an experimental group (submitted to AOT) or to a control group.

Predictors of healthy days at home: Benchmarking long-term outcomes in geriatric trauma.

J Trauma Acute Care Surg

December 2024

From the Division of Trauma, Burn, and Surgical Critical Care, Department of Surgery (M.C.-A., C.B.S., J.C.E., C.W., S.N., R.A., Z.C., A.S., J.M.H.), Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School; Center for Surgery and Public Health, Department of Surgery (M.C.-A., C.K.Z., M.J., Z.C., A.S., J.M.H.), Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School; Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health (M.C.-A., C.K.Z., M.J., Z.C., A.S., J.M.H.), Boston, Massachusetts; and Department of Surgery (C.K.Z.), Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina.

Background: Quality benchmarking has recently evolved from a historical focus on short-term morbidity and mortality as the key metrics to assessing long-term outcomes. Long-term quality metrics have been shown to provide a more complete assessment of geriatric trauma care. Among these metrics, patients' average number of healthy days at home (HDAH) proports to be a useful administrative claims-based marker of patient functional status.

Background: Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are questionnaires that collect health data directly from the patient, without any intervention from a third party. The aim of rehabilitation units is to restore function. Functional gain can be evaluated with classic scales, such as the locomotor subscale of the Functional Independence Measure.

Objective: Over the past decade, the role of nurse practitioners (NPs) in long-term care home (LTCH) settings has significantly expanded. Despite this trend, gaps have been identified in the description of collaborative practices between NPs and physicians in the LTCH sector. This study aimed to characterize the elements of collaboration between NPs and physicians in LTCH settings by applying the "Structured Collaborative Practice Core Model.

Intrinsic Capacity and Life Quality Among Taiwanese Older People: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OTJR (Thorofare N J)

December 2024

International Gaming Research Unit, Psychology Department, Nottingham Trent University, Nottingham, UK.

Intrinsic capacity (IC), an internal composite ability proposed by the World Health Organization, is fundamental to older people's health. The present study examined potential models explaining the association between IC and quality of life (QoL) among older people in Taiwan. Frailty, basic activities of daily living (BADL), and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) were hypothesized to be mediators in the association between IC and QoL.
