In recent years, there has been a notable increase in the concentration of air pollutants in the troposphere, especially ozone. However, limited research has gone beyond examining histopathological alterations in the olfactory bulb (OB) to explore the effects of ozone exposure on olfactory and cognitive functions. In our study, we exposed nine-month-old C57BL/6 mice to ozone at a concentration of 1.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focused on creating machine learning models to identify predictive features of dementia in older adults who initially showed normal cognition.
  • Four models were developed and tested, with the random forest model showing the highest accuracy (93%) using factors like memory test results, education, and follow-up time.
  • The findings suggest that this machine learning approach can effectively predict dementia in primary healthcare settings, helping to track cognitive changes and enable early intervention.

  • This study analyzed the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy (US-FNAB) and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in diagnosing different-sized thyroid nodules in 110 patients.
  • CEUS showed higher sensitivity and diagnostic accuracy compared to US-FNAB for nodules under 1 cm, particularly for those smaller than 0.5 cm, where it achieved 100% sensitivity.
  • The findings suggest that CEUS is recommended for accurately diagnosing and evaluating thyroid nodules, especially those less than 1 cm in diameter, and particularly for nodules ≤0.5 cm.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treatment with Bcr-Abl tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) has significantly improved patient outcomes, yet challenges such as drug resistance and persistence of leukemic stem cells persist. This study explores the potential of naringenin, a natural flavonoid, to enhance the efficacy of Bcr-Abl TKIs in CML therapy. We showed that naringenin reduces viability of a panel of CML cell lines regardless of varying cellular origin and genetic mutations, and acts synergistically with dasatinib and ponatinib.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most common form of inherited intellectual disability and a monogenic cause of autism spectrum disorders. Deficiencies in the fragile X messenger ribonucleoprotein, encoded by the gene, lead to various anatomical and pathophysiological abnormalities and behavioral deficits, such as spine dysmorphogenesis and learning and memory impairments. Synaptic cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) play crucial roles in synapse formation and neural signal transmission by promoting the formation of new synaptic contacts, accurately organizing presynaptic and postsynaptic protein complexes, and ensuring the accuracy of signal transmission.

To investigate the correlation between neuropathic pain's early diagnosis, severity, and nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich-containing family, pyrin domain-containing-3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation, we retrospectively evaluated 50 patients with neuropathic pain and 50 healthy individuals. Activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome was measured in blood samples, as well as pain levels and clinical markers. Neuropathic pain patients exhibited elevated NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is a key factor in stress adaptation and avoidance of a social stress behavioral response. Recent studies have shown that brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression in stressed mice is brain region-specific, particularly involving the corticolimbic system, including the ventral tegmental area, nucleus accumbens, prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. Determining how brain-derived neurotrophic factor participates in stress processing in different brain regions will deepen our understanding of social stress psychopathology.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common type of irreversible dementia, is predicted to affect 152 million people by 2050. Evidence from large-scale preventive randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on modifiable risk variables in Europe has shown that multi-domain lifestyle treatments for older persons at high risk of dementia may be practical and effective. Given the substantial differences between the Chinese and European populations in terms of demographics and living conditions, direct adoption of the European program in China remains unfeasible.

  • The study investigates the link between air pollution and the risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in older adults in China, using data from the Hubei Memory and Aging Cohort Study.
  • Results show that higher levels of pollutants like PM2.5 and PM10 significantly increase the odds of developing MCI, particularly in older individuals.
  • The findings highlight the need for more research across different populations to further understand and address the impact of air pollution on cognitive health in aging populations.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a disabling neurodegenerating disorder characterized by chronic neuroinflammation, cognitive impairment and memory loss. Current treatment options for AD offer limited benefits, underscoring the urgent need for alternative therapeutics. Despite the promising effects of ginsenosides in neurodegenerative diseases, the therapeutic potential of ginsenoside compound Mc1 (GCMc1) in AD remains to be thoroughly investigated.

The potential role of ribonucleic acid methylation in the pathological mechanisms of fragile X syndrome.

Behav Brain Res

August 2023

Brain Science and Advanced Technology Institute, Hubei Province Key Laboratory of Occupational Hazard Identification and Control, School of Medicine, Wuhan University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China; Geriatric Hospital Affiliated to Wuhan University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China. Electronic address:

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a common inherited cause of intellectual disabilities and single-gene cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), resulting from the loss of functional fragile X messenger ribonucleoprotein (FMRP), an RNA-binding protein (RBP) encoded by the fragile X messenger ribonucleoprotein 1 (FMR1) gene. Ribonucleic acid (RNA) methylation can lead to developmental diseases, including FXS, through various mechanisms mediated by 5-hydroxymethylcytosine, 5-methylcytosine, N-methyladenosine, etc. Emerging evidence suggests that modifications of some RNA species have been linked to FXS.

Huntingtin-associated protein 1-associated intracellular trafficking in neurodegenerative diseases.

Front Aging Neurosci

February 2023

Hubei Key Laboratory of Nerve Injury and Functional Reconstruction, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, Hubei, China.

Huntingtin-associated protein 1 (HAP1), the first identified HTT-binding partner, is highly expressed in the central nervous system, and has been found to associated with neurological diseases. Mounting evidence suggests that HAP1 functions as a component of cargo-motor molecules to bind various proteins and participates in intracellular trafficking. It is known that the failure of intracellular transport is a key contributor to the progression of neurodegenerative disorders (NDs) including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Huntington's disease (HD), Parkinson's disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) and spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA).
