Background: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of day of the week and wearing a device (reactivity) on objectively measured physical activity (PA) in older people.

Methods: Walking duration as a measure for PA was recorded from 1333 German community-dwelling older people (≥65 years, 43.8% women) over 5 days using accelerometers (activPAL).

Purpose: The primary focus in long-term care is to maintain quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of severity of neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and their interaction with dementia severity among institutionalized older people with dementia.

Methods: 352 long-term care residents aged 65 years or over with dementia participated in this cross-sectional study.

Our aim was to investigate how energy intake modifies the association of the stage of dementia with health related quality of life (HRQoL) among institutionalized older people. A cross-sectional sample of 538 older long-term care residents with dementia in Helsinki, Finland were assessed with HRQoL (15D), energy intake (from one to two days), and the stage of dementia by the clinical dementia rating (CDR) scale. The energy intakes were standardized by -scores to include both men and women in the same analyses.

An evaluation of Västerbotten Intervention Programme (VIP) was recently conducted by San Sebastian et al. (BMC Public Health 19:202, 2019). Evaluation of health care interventions of this kind require 1) an understanding of both the design and the nature of the intervention, 2) correct definition of the target population, and 3) careful choice of the appropriate evaluation method.

Prevalence, incidence, and clinical impact of cognitive-motoric risk syndrome in Europe, USA, and Japan: facts and numbers update 2019.

J Cachexia Sarcopenia Muscle

October 2019

Geriatric Clinic Unit, Medicine and Geriatric-Rehabilitation Department, and Department of Medicine and Surgery, University of Parma, University Hospital of Parma, Parma, Italy.

A new syndrome called the 'motoric-cognitive risk' (MCR) syndrome has recently been proposed in older persons. According to this definition, the parallel impairment in muscle and brain function is more predictive for identifying subjects at risk of dementia than impairment a in single system alone. Epidemiological studies suggest that among older persons, enrolled in worldwide population-based studies, 10% are affected by this syndrome, which confers a higher risk of future disability.

Brain resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC), white matter (WM) integrity, and cortical morphometry, as well as neuropsychological performance, have seldom been studied together to differentiate Alzheimer's disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and elderly cognitively healthy comparison (eCHC) samples in the context of the same study. We examined brain rsFC in samples of patients with mild AD ( = 50) and MCI ( = 49) in comparison with eCHC samples ( = 48) and then explored whether rsFC abnormalities can be linked to underlying gray matter (GM) volumetric and/or WM microstructural abnormalities. The mild AD sample showed significantly increased rsFC in the executive control network (ECN) and dorsal attention network (DAN) compared with the eCHC sample, and increased rsFC in ECN compared with MCI.

It is commonly accepted that frailty and dementia-related cognitive decline are strongly associated. However, degree of this association is often debated, especially in homebound elders with disabilities. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association of frailty on cognitive function in older adults receiving homecare.

Background: The Australian/Canadian hand Osteoarthritis Index (AUSCAN) and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities knee and hip Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) are the most commonly used clinical tools to manage and monitor osteoarthritis (OA). Few studies have as yet reported longitudinal changes in the AUSCAN index regarding the hand. While there are published data regarding WOMAC assessments of the hip and the knee, the two sites have always evaluated separately.

In the evaluation of the nature of naming disorders, there is a rapid increase of anomia with the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is associated with whole brain atrophy. Although numerous studies have investigated this naming disorder, there is limited information on naming procedures in these patients. Reaction time (RT) is highly sensitive to dementia and provides an accurate measurement.

The assistance to older community-dwellers provided by family caregivers is crucial for the maintenance of an acceptable quality of life, especially when dementia is present. The caregiver burden may be extremely high, but few data are available on what patient domains mainly affect the caregiver. The aim of this cross-sectional study, performed in older outpatients, was to examine the impact of cognitive, physical and nutritional status of elderly community-dwellers on the caregiver burden, as evaluated by the Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI).

This paper describes a systematic review of quantitative and qualitative studies that examine the effectiveness of dyadic approaches to life review and reminiscence. The search process began with 1,056 potentially eligible articles and, after a multi-step screening process, led to 20 full-text articles for review. The resulting studies (ten quantitative, nine qualitative, and one mixed-method) comprised six different kinds of dyadic approaches.

Geriatric medicine fellowship programs provide comprehensive training to one-year clinical fellows and must demonstrate successful progression of competence among fellows by reporting on 23 milestones to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) is a model of care located throughout the United States and can serve as a training venue for fellows. We surveyed 113 fellowship program directors with a response rate of 42% ( = 48).
