Distinct regulation of Tau Monomer and aggregate uptake and intracellular accumulation in human neurons.

Background: The prion-like spreading of Tau pathology is the leading cause of disease progression in various tauopathies. A critical step in propagating pathologic Tau in the brain is the transport from the extracellular environment and accumulation inside naïve neurons. Current research indicates that human neurons internalize both the physiological extracellular Tau (eTau) monomers and the pathological eTau aggregates.

A simplified multidimensional scale approach is effective in predicting mortality in hospitalized older adults and highlights the role of nutrition.

Background & Aims: Malnutrition and cognitive impairment are among the major contributors to frailty, that significantly increases the risk of mortality of older hospitalized patients. Multidimensional frailty assessment tools, such as the multidimensional prognostic index-MPI, a tool based on a standard comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA), have proven valuable for predicting adverse outcomes, including mortality of older adults following acute illness but its application in everyday clinical practice is limited. We hypothesized that removing parameters not closely associated with mortality and sorting the patient population according to the presence or not of cognitive impairment with possible integration of common laboratory markers, could provide a simplified approach that could improve practicability in all settings with at least comparable 1-year mortality predictive value.

Burden of post-acute COVID-19 sequelae in healthcare workers and its course over a 30-month period-results from a prospective multicentre cohort.

Purpose: As healthcare workers (HCW) have been disproportionally affected by COVID-19, its post-acute sequelae (PASC) in HCW can impact healthcare systems. We assessed the burden and course of PASC in HCW over a 30-month period.

Methods: In a prospective multicentre HCW cohort in Switzerland, PASC surveys were conducted in 03/2021, 09/2021, 06/2022, 04/2023, and 10/2023.

Performance and safety of transparent postoperative dressings with silicone adhesive in daily practice on fragile skin.

Objective: Currently there is limited real-world research on the adhesion qualities, pain and clinical performance of specific silicone adhesives products, and their role in maintaining skin integrity and preventing medical adhesive-related skin injuries (MARSI). This paper presents a clinical evaluation of performance and safety parameters of two silicone adhesive dressings on lacerations or surgical wounds and the surrounding skin in daily practice on fragile skin.

Method: An observational, prospective, multicentre, uncontrolled post-market clinical observational study with Leukomed T skin sensitive and Leukomed T plus skin sensitive (both BSN medical GmbH, Essity Group) was undertaken at three sites across Germany between June 2021 to November 2022.

E-Health-based, trans-sectoral, geriatric health service - Geriatric Network (GerNe).

Currently, exchange of information between the geriatric clinic and the attending general practitioner (GP) occurs primarily through the doctor's letter after discharging from the clinic. The aim of our study was to reduce readmissions of multimorbid, geriatric patients to the clinic by establishing a new form of care via an electronic case file (ECF) and a consultation service (CS). The discharging geriatric clinic filled out an online ECF.

Nutrition for the older adult - Current concepts. Report from an ESPEN symposium.

Background & Aims: In view of the global demographic shift, a scientific symposium was organised by the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) to address nutrition-related challenges of the older population and provide an overview of the current state of knowledge.

Methods: Eighteen nutrition-related issues of the ageing global society were presented by international experts during the symposium and summarised in this report.

Results: Anorexia of ageing, dysphagia, malnutrition, frailty, sarcopenia, sarcopenic obesity, and the metabolic syndrome were highlighted as major nutrition-related geriatric syndromes.

Sarcopenic obesity and health outcomes: An umbrella review of systematic reviews with meta-analysis.

Many studies support the idea that sarcopenic obesity (SO) could be considered a potential risk factor for negative health outcomes. These results have been inconsistent, and no umbrella reviews exist regarding this topic. Several databases until November 2023 were searched for systematic reviews with meta-analysis of observational studies (cross-sectional, case-control and prospective).

Background: There is debate about the causes of the recent birth rate decline in high-income countries worldwide. During the pandemic, concern about the effects on reproductive health has caused vaccine hesitancy. We investigated the association of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and infection with involuntary childlessness.

Positional contrastive learning for improved thigh muscle segmentation in MR images.

The accurate segmentation of individual muscles is essential for quantitative MRI analysis of thigh images. Deep learning methods have achieved state-of-the-art results in segmentation, but they require large numbers of labeled data to perform well. However, labeling individual thigh muscles slice by slice for numerous volumes is a laborious and time-consuming task, which limits the availability of annotated datasets.

Dopamine Pharmacodynamics: New Insights.

Dopamine is a key neurotransmitter involved in physiological processes such as motor control, motivation, reward, cognitive function, and maternal and reproductive behaviors. Therefore, dysfunctions of the dopaminergic system are related to a plethora of human diseases. Dopamine, via different circuitries implicated in compulsive behavior, reward, and habit formation, also represents a key player in substance use disorder and the formation and perpetuation of mechanisms leading to addiction.

A narrative review of risk mitigation strategies in the management of opioids for chronic pain and palliative care in older adults: interprofessional collaboration with the pharmacist.

Background And Objective: The prevalence of chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) in older adults is high. Opioids carry significant risk for harm in older adults. Yet, many older adults are established on long-term opioid therapy for the treatment of CNCP despite limited documented efficacy.

SARS-CoV-2 immunity and reasons for non-vaccination among healthcare workers from eastern and northern Switzerland: results from a nested multicentre cross-sectional study.

Aims Of The Study: We aimed to assess the extent of SARS-CoV-2 humoral immunity elicited by previous infections and/or vaccination among healthcare workers, and to identify reasons why healthcare workers decided against vaccination.

Methods: This nested cross-sectional study included volunteer healthcare workers from 14 healthcare institutions in German-speaking Switzerland. In January 2021, SARS-CoV-2 vaccines were available for healthcare workers.

A digital teleneuropsychology platform for the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment: from concept to certification as a medical device.

Background: Innovative digital solutions are shaping a new concept of dementia care, opening additional venues for prevention, diagnosis, monitoring and treatment. Hereby, we report the development of a tablet-based teleneuropsychology platform (Tenèpsia®), from concept to certification as Medical Device (MD) Class IIA, as per new MD regulation 745/2017.

Methods: The platform was designed for the remote cognitive evaluation and created thanks to the effort of a collaborative working group including experts from three Italian scientific societies and Biogen Italia S.

Effect of Novel Laser Shoe Photobiomodulation on Neuropathic Pain and Plantar Pressure Profile in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus with Peripheral Neuropathy.

Background: Photobiomodulation (PBM) or Low-level laser is used to treat diabetic foot complications. The existing method of laser application to the foot did not cover the foot's entire area to improve the foot's microcirculation. Therefore, we have developed a cost-effective Special LASER Shoe device, focusing exclusively on the entire foot region to manage neuropathic pain and other symptoms in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Oral frailty among dentate and edentate older adults in long-term care.

Background: The objectives of this study were to compare oral frailty (OFr) among edentate and dentate older adults living in long-term care facilities (LTCF) and to clarify how edentulism and oral disease burden (ODB) of dentate older adults are associated with OFr.

Methods: The population of this study comprised 94 edentate and 209 dentate residents in LTCF in Helsinki, Finland, who had previously participated in a nutritional study. The participants underwent a clinical oral examination.

Dose response of transcranial near infrared light stimulation on brain functional connectivity and cognition in older adults-A randomized comparison.

Photobiomodulation, also called low-level light therapy, has been reported in animal studies to have an effect on brain activity and cognition. However, studies in humans regarding its effect on cognition and brain functional connectivity, and the required dose threshold for achieving the same have been very limited. We compared the effects of different doses of photobiomodulation (PBM) on cognition and resting state brain functional connectivity in 25 cognitively normal adults aged 55-70 years.

Atypical (non-V600E) BRAF mutations in metastatic colorectal cancer in population and real-world cohorts.

BRAF-V600E mutation (mt) is a strong negative prognostic and predictive biomarker in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Non-V600Emt, designated atypical BRAFmt (aBRAFmt) are rare, and little is known about their frequency, co-mutations and prognostic and predictive role. These were compared between mutational groups of mCRC patients collected from three Nordic population-based or real-world cohorts.

An engineered glove to follow finger function in rheumatoid arthritis: an observational prospective study.

The engineered Hand Test System (HTS) glove has shown high reliability in assessing the baseline functional status of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) hand. Starting from this achievement, the aim of the present observational prospective study was to assess the functionality of the single fingers of rheumatoid hand at follow-up. Eighty RA patients performed HTS glove tests at baseline and among these fifty-six patients were re-tested after 7 months.
