For patients with high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) for whom bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) treatment has failed, bladder preservation is a high priority. Immune checkpoint inhibitors have shown promise, but systemic administration is associated with substantial toxicity. In this single-arm phase 2 study, 30 patients with NMIBC after BCG failure were treated with intravesical durvalumab every 6 wk.

There is remarkable morphologic and genetic heterogeneity in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In a small percentage of cases of AML, increased eosinophils and/or basophils are present in the bone marrow and sometimes in the peripheral blood. This is often a puzzling diagnostic situation but also an important finding that requires special investigation.

The spectrum of HHV-8-associated disorders includes Kaposi's sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma, multicentric Castleman's disease, and the recently described KSHV inflammatory cytokine syndrome (KICS), a life-threatening disorder complicating HIV infection. There have been no reports in the literature concerning non-immunosuppressed individuals affected with KICS. We report here a KICS-like illness occurring in two elderly Greek men without HIV infection or other recognizable cause of immunosuppression.

Background: Despite advances in the treatment of oncology patients, therapy-related side effects may lead to premature morbidity. Inflammatory activation that has been linked to cardiovascular disease is crucial for the pathogenesis of both Hodgkin (HL) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the vascular effects of chemotherapy in patients with HL and NHL by positron emission tomography/computed tomography with 18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18-FDG PET/CT) and to investigate interactions with systemic inflammation as assessed by circulating inflammatory markers.

Objective: Changes in the care of patients with SLE dictate a re-evaluation of its natural history and risk factors for disease deterioration and damage accrual. We sought to decipher factors predictive of a deterioration in phenotype ('transition') in patients initially presenting with non-severe disease.
Methods: Patients from the 'Attikon' cohort with disease duration ≥1 year were included.

Objective: This study aimed to analyse the phenotype of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) at first presentation and during follow-up in a newly established SLE cohort based at 'Attikon' University Hospital. The hospital combines primary, secondary and tertiary care for the region of Western Attica, Greece.
Methods: This study comprised a mixed prevalent and incident cohort of 555 Caucasian patients diagnosed with SLE according to American College of Rheumatology 1997 criteria and/or the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC) 2012 criteria.

Snakebite envenoming is a major health issue in many parts of the world, especially in rural areas. is the commonest cause of snakebite in Greece. We report our experience with a patient bitten by such a snake, who developed massive intravascular hemolysis characterized by a spherocytic rather than microangiopathic hemolytic picture.

Introduction: Lauge-Hansen classification for ankle fractures is helpful in directing the management of the fracture and has got prognostic significance. However, trimalleolar fractures with double medial malleolar fracture are not yet described.
Case Report: Two cases of trimalleolar fracture-dislocation of the ankle with a double fracture of the medial malleolus are reported.

Stem cell therapy has become a subject of great interest to researchers worldwide. One of the medical conditions being studied for possible treatment with the use of stem cells is erectile dysfunction, and particularly organic and post-radical prostatectomy erectile dysfunction. However, is stem cell therapy a viable treatment option for erectile dysfunction? The current body of literature provides a wide array of clinical trials performed on animal models simulating different types of human erectile dysfunction.

Background: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) improves exercise capacity, quality of life, emotional stress, and endothelial function in chronic heart failure with impaired systolic function. We sought to investigate the effects of FES on the above parameters in patients with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).
Methods: Thirty HFpEF patients, 18 female and 12 male, aged 69 ± 8 years, in New York Heart Association class II or III and with mean ejection fraction 63% ± 6%, were randomly (1:1) assigned to a 6-week FES program or placebo.

Our understanding of vascular pathophysiology has significantly improved during the past two decades. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus have an increased vascular risk and a series of modifiable risk factors play a crucial role in the atherosclerotic process. The microvascular dysfunction in diabetes results in increased vascular permeability and impaired regulation of blood flow and vascular tone.

Chemokines are a group of small secreted proteins (8-10 kDa) produced and released by a wide variety of cell types. They were originally described as mediators of leukocyte recruitment, which is essential in acute and chronic inflammation. They also play a critical role in many pathophysiological processes such as allergic responses, infections and autoimmune diseases, tumor growth and hematopoietic development.
