The incorporation of electrically conductive inclusions in structural materials can impart self-sensing functionalities, making them ideal for structural health monitoring applications. However, the use of more sustainable alternatives and their effect on key engineering properties remain largely unexplored, while the adoption of different testing protocols for the characterisation of electrical/self-sensing properties can lead to different results, thus questioning their reliability, even for existing smart composites. This paper investigates systematically the effect of recycled carbon fibres and graphite powder on the mechanical, electrical, transport properties and piezoresistive performance of cementitious mortars.

Background: Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) remains a significant problem globally with increasing estimates for disease burden. In a Phase 3 placebo-controlled trial, a novel treatment using the Vibrating Capsule was recently shown to be effective in treating patients with CIC. However, its safety and tolerability has not been described in detail.

The effect of preexisting neutralizing antibodies (NAb) on SARS-CoV-2 shedding in postvaccination infection (PVI) is not well understood. We characterized viral shedding longitudinally in nasal specimens in relation to baseline (pre/periinfection) serum NAb titers in 125 participants infected with SARS-CoV-2 variants. Among 68 vaccinated participants, we quantified the effect of baseline NAb titers on maximum viral RNA titers and infectivity duration.

Crohn's disease (CD) involves a complex intestinal microenvironment driven by chronic inflammation. While single-cell RNA sequencing has provided valuable insights into this biology, the spatial context is lost during single-cell preparation of mucosal biopsies. To deepen our understanding of the distinct inflammatory signatures of CD and overcome the limitations of single-cell RNA sequencing, we combined spatial transcriptomics of frozen CD surgical tissue sections with single-cell transcriptomics of ileal CD mucosa.

Context:There is a 2-4x increased risk for musculoskeletal injury after concussion. A potential reason for the increased risk is aberrant biomechanics. The majority of prior research has focused on single-task biomechanics, but dual-task biomechanics may better represent athletic competition.

Palliative care delivery in oncology is challenging and referral practices vary widely. Standardized, needs-based screening and triage systems are essential to more effectively address patients' palliative care needs. Assess the feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness among patients with advanced solid cancers of using electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs) to screen for palliative care needs.

In recent years, there has been a growing appreciation for how regulatory events that occur either co- or post-transcriptionally contribute to the control of gene expression. Messenger RNAs (mRNAs) are extensively regulated throughout their metabolism in a precise spatiotemporal manner that requires sophisticated molecular mechanisms for cell-type-specific gene expression, which dictates cell function. Moreover, dysfunction at any of these steps can result in a variety of human diseases, including cancers, muscular atrophies, and neurological diseases.

Longissimus muscles (LM) in sheep are important for animal scientists who study meat quality and translational researchers who study thoracolumbar spinal disease. Computed tomography (CT) is an established technique for characterizing paraspinal muscles in sheep; however, studies reporting reproducibility of CT measures using open-source software are lacking. The objectives of this prospective pilot study were to develop a standardized protocol for measuring LM area and density in sheep using CT and to determine the reproducibility for measurements.

Purpose: No myxosporean species has been fully described from the gill of the western creek chubsucker, Erimyzon claviformis (Girard, 1856). Here, we report from morphometric, histopathological, and DNA sequence data on a new species of Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882 from the gill arch of E. claviformis from the Red River drainage, Arkansas, USA.

Neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) results in gray and white matter injuries, leading to impairments in social behavior and severe neurological deficits. Clemastine treatment has demonstrated efficacy in alleviating behavioral deficits in various neurological disorders by improving myelin formation. It has been suggested that the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the striatum play a key role in human social behaviors.

The Alzheimer's Disease in Older Adults with Chronic Conditions (ADACC) Network is funded by the National Institute on Aging as a U24 cooperative agreement. ADACC is an inclusive, multidisciplinary group across multiple institutions that is charged with the task of developing evidence-based strategies for the use and implementation of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) biomarkers among older adults with cognitive impairment and multiple chronic conditions (MCCs). This report summarizes highlights of the First Annual Symposium of ADACC, which was held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in April 2024.

Transcription-coupled repair (TCR) is a vital nucleotide excision repair sub-pathway that removes DNA lesions from actively transcribed DNA strands. Binding of CSB to lesion-stalled RNA Polymerase II (Pol II) initiates TCR by triggering the recruitment of downstream repair factors. Yet it remains unknown how transcription factor IIH (TFIIH) is recruited to the intact TCR complex.

The need for biocompatible materials for medical devices remains critical, as complications such as infection, thrombosis, and biofouling significantly contribute to medical device failure and patient morbidity and mortality. In recent years, nitric oxide (NO)-releasing technologies have been explored to mitigate bacterial infections, particularly those stemming from common gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial pathogens. However, NO-releasing materials do not inherently possess anti-fouling capabilities.

Poor sleep quality is a major problem for women with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Potential causes of poor sleep quality include elevated symptoms of anxiety, hyperarousal, and decreased high frequency-heart rate variability (HF-HRV). Exercise training both decreases anxiety symptoms and increases HF-HRV among samples without PTSD.

Background: Influenza is a pervasive respiratory infection which disproportionately burdens long-term care residents. To limit outbreaks, guidelines recommend antiviral prophylaxis, particularly oseltamivir or zanamivir, despite acknowledging the inadequate supporting evidence. Therefore, we aimed to review the literature on the efficacy of oseltamivir, zanamivir, and baloxavir prophylaxis for influenza in long-term care.

Background: While studies have examined effects of parental job loss early in the COVID-19 pandemic, few have assessed economic impacts of student job loss.
Methods: The Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey (ABES) was a one-time online, nationally-representative survey administered by CDC in 2021 to understand high school students' experiences. We assessed associations between student, parent, and dyadic employment experiences and two measures of economic stress: housing instability and food insufficiency.

Background: Low socioeconomic groups and racial/ethnic minorities continue to experience pediatric cancer outcome disparities, and remain underrepresented in clinical trials. It is vital to understand why underrepresentation exists and to address it in order to generalize trial findings to all groups. This study examined institutional disparities in clinical trial offerings and enrollment for children and adolescents with hematologic malignancies.

Background: While mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) therapies show promise for treating several indications due to their regenerative and immunomodulatory capacity, clinical translation has yet to be achieved due to a lack of robust, scalable manufacturing practices. Expansion using undefined fetal bovine serum (FBS) or human platelet lysate contributes to MSC functional heterogeneity and limits control of product quality. The need for tunable and consistent media has thus motivated development of chemically defined media (CDM).

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) from multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs) pose a significant challenge for healthcare systems. Patients can arrive at hospitals already infected ("importation") or acquire infections during their stay ("nosocomial infection"). Many cases, often asymptomatic, complicate rapid identification due to testing limitations and delays.
