While most forms of alopecia neoplastica are attributable to cutaneous metastases from visceral primary malignancies, rarely a diffuse primary skin cancer may present as alopecia. Herein, we present a case of angiosarcoma which clinically mimicked an inflammatory alopecia and was diagnosed by examination of alopecia-protocol horizontal histologic sections. A 72-year-old female presented to her dermatologist with a chief complaint of hair loss and pruritus.

Background: The efficacy of lung cancer screening (LCS) to reduce lung cancer specific mortality is heavily dependent on adherence to recommended screening guidelines, with real-world adherence rates reported to be drastically lower than rates described in clinical trials. There is a dearth in the literature on reminder processes and clinical workflows used to address adherence and robust data is needed to fully understand which clinical set-ups, processes, and context enhance and increase continued LCS participation. This paper describes a protocol for an environmental scan of adherence and reminder processes that are currently used in LCS programs across the United States.

Diet is a modifiable lifestyle factor that could impact the development of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) and its components. MetS prevalence is high and diet quality is suboptimal among older African American women. MetS has been associated with many individual food groups, however, emerging research suggests that analyzing overall diet quality provides insight into the synergistic effects of food groups on health outcomes.

Background: Prior research demonstrates that nearly all (95 %) people with lung cancer (PwLC) report stigma, and approximately half (48 %) PwLC experience stigma during clinical encounters with oncology care providers (OCPs). When stigma is experienced in a medical context, it can have undesirable consequences including patients' delaying and underreporting of symptoms, misreporting of smoking behavior, and avoiding help-seeking such as psychosocial support and cessation counseling. Multi-level interventions are needed to prevent and mitigate lung cancer stigma.

Introduction: When a pathogenic BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation is identified in a family, cascade genetic testing of family members is recommended since the results may inform screening or treatment decisions in men and women. However, rates of cascade testing are low, and men are considerably less likely than women to pursue cascade testing. To facilitate cascade testing in men, we designed a Web-based genetic education tool that addressed barriers to cascade testing, was individually tailored, delivered proactively, and could be used in lieu of pretest genetic counseling to streamline the cascade testing process.

Identifying the Leading Sources of Saturated Fat and Added Sugar in U.S. Adults.

Nutrients

July 2024

Department of Oncology, Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, Georgetown University, Washington, DC 20007, USA.

The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend limiting intakes of saturated fat and added sugars (SF/AS) to <10% total energy. Data-driven approaches to identify sources of SF/AS are needed to meet these goals. We propose using a population-based approach to identify the leading food and beverage sources of SF/AS consumed by US adults.

Functional and phenotypic heterogeneity of dendritic cells (DCs) play crucial roles in facilitating the development of diverse immune responses essential for host protection. Here, we report that KDM5C, a histone lysine demethylase, regulates conventional or classical DC (cDC) and plasmacytoid DC (pDC) population heterogeneity and function. Mice deficient in KDM5C in DCs have increased proportions of cDC2Bs and cDC1s, which is partly dependent on type I interferon (IFN) and pDCs.

Homeostatic regulation of NAD(H) and NADP(H) in cells.

Genes Dis

September 2024

Department of Oncology, Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, DC 20057, USA.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)/reduced NAD (NADH) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP)/reduced NADP (NADPH) are essential metabolites involved in multiple metabolic pathways and cellular processes. NAD and NADH redox couple plays a vital role in catabolic redox reactions, while NADPH is crucial for cellular anabolism and antioxidant responses. Maintaining NAD(H) and NADP(H) homeostasis is crucial for normal physiological activity and is tightly regulated through various mechanisms, such as biosynthesis, consumption, recycling, and conversion between NAD(H) and NADP(H).
