Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are the most common fracture of the upper extremity. Given that steroids are one of the most commonly prescribed drugs and are usually prescribed for chronic conditions, steroid use represents a key factor to consider in how to optimize perioperative outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate if there are differences in perioperative outcomes for patients undergoing DRF open reduction and internal fixation based on preoperative steroid use.

Background: COVID-19 disrupted undergraduate clinical education when medical schools removed students from clinical rotations following AAMC recommendations. Clerkship directors (CDs) had to adapt rapidly and modify clerkship curricula. However, the scope and effects of these modifications are unknown.

Introduction: Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO) has become a support modality for patients with acute respiratory failure refractory to standard therapies. VV ECMO has been increasingly used during the current COVID-19 pandemic for patients with refractory respiratory failure. The object of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of VV ECMO in patients with COVID-19 compared to patients with non-COVID-19 viral infections.

Microdeletion in the 16p11.2 loci lead to a distinct neurodevelopmental disorder with intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder in addition to dysmorphia, macrocephaly, and increased body mass index. One of the deleted genes in this region is which codes for proline-rich transmembrane protein 2.

Background: Multiple techniques describe the management of the open abdomen (OA) and restoration of abdominal wall integrity after damage-control laparotomy (DCL). It is unclear which operative technique provides the best method of achieving primary myofascial closure at the index hospitalization.
Methods: A writing group from the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the current literature regarding OA management strategies in the adult population after DCL.

Purpose: To compare 90-day postoperative complications, health care use, 2-year and 5-year rates of reoperation and manipulation under anesthesia, and costs at the 30-day, 90-day, and 1-year postoperative intervals following open and arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (RCR).
Methods: Patients who underwent an open or arthroscopic RCR with minimum 5-year follow-up were identified in a national database (PearlDiver Technologies) using Common Procedural Terminology and codes. These patients were then stratified into 2 cohorts: open RCRs and arthroscopic RCRs.

Aims: Corticosteroid injections are often used to manage glenohumeral arthritis in patients who may be candidates for future total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) or reverse shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA). In the conservative management of these patients, corticosteroid injections are often provided for symptomatic relief. The purpose of this study was to determine if the timing of corticosteroid injections prior to TSA or rTSA is associated with changes in rates of revision and periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) following these procedures.

Background: Studies about the transradial technique and experience with this approach abound in the neurointerventional literature, but studies focusing on patient perspectives and preferences with respect to transfemoral or transradial access are scarce.
Methods: Patients from our center who underwent both transradial and transfemoral approaches for diagnostic and interventional cerebral angiograms on distinct occasions between January 2016 and January 2021 were identified and interviewed by phone regarding their experience with these access approaches. The first question was regarding the choice for an eventual next procedure (radial, femoral, or no preference).

Various studies have revealed a disproportionately low representation of skin of color (SOC) dermatology in the medical education system of the United States. This disparity contributes to adverse experiences, missed and/or delayed diagnoses, and overall health inequities for individuals of color. The lack of sufficient SOC education begins at the medical school level and continues throughout residency, fellowship, and beyond formal training.

Intersectionality theory examines how matrices of power and interlocking structures of oppression shape and influence people's multiple identities. It reminds us that people's lives cannot be explained by taking into account single categories, such as gender, race, sexuality, or socio-economic status. Rather, human lives are multi-dimensional and complex, and people's lived realities are shaped by different factors and social dynamics operating together.

The superior colliculus (SC) integrates visual and other sensory information to regulate critical reflexive and innate behaviors, such as prey capture. In the mouse, the vast majority of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) innervate the SC, including inputs from both the contralateral (contra-RGCs) and ipsilateral (ipsi-RGCs) eye. Despite this, previous studies revealed minimal neuronal responses to ipsilateral stimulation and few binocular interactions in the mouse SC.

Same-day discharge pathways in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are gaining popularity as a means to increase patient satisfaction and reduce overall costs, but these pathways have not been thoroughly evaluated in potentially at-risk populations, such as in patients ≥80 years old. The purpose of this study was to compare 90-day complications and mortality following same-day discharge after primary TKA in patients ≥80 years old and those <80 years old. Patients who underwent unilateral primary TKA, were discharged on postoperative day 0, and had a minimum 90-day follow-up were identified in a national insurance claims database (PearlDiver Technologies) using Current Procedural Terminology code 27447.

Background: Non-ventilator associated hospital acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP) affects approximately 1 in 100 hospitalized patients yet risk-adjusted outcomes associated with developing NV-HAP are unknown.
Methods: Retrospective cohort study with propensity score matched populations (NV-HAP vs no NV-HAP), using ICD-10 codes for bacterial pneumonia not present on admission. Outcomes included the patient level probability of NV-HAP developing among acute care non-transfer admissions in 133 Veterans Affairs hospitals and subsequent mortality, length of stay, inpatient sepsis, and 12-month costs.

Purpose: To compare the rates of reoperation and 90-day perioperative complications between open arthrotomy and arthroscopy for the treatment of septic ankle arthritis using a national all-payer claims database.
Methods: Patients with a diagnosis of septic ankle arthritis who underwent irrigation and debridement through arthroscopy or arthrotomy were identified in a national data set from 2015-2020 through an all-payer claims database. Demographic and comorbidity characteristics including age, sex, infectious etiologies, and Elixhauser comorbidities were obtained.

Background: We evaluated our SARS-CoV-2 prefusion spike recombinant protein vaccine (CoV2 preS dTM) with different adjuvants, unadjuvanted, and in a one-injection and two-injection dosing schedule in a previous phase 1-2 study. Based on interim results from that study, we selected a two-injection schedule and the AS03 adjuvant for further clinical development. However, lower than expected antibody responses, particularly in older adults, and higher than expected reactogenicity after the second vaccination were observed.

Introduction: Little is known about how patients with asthma and eczema perceive their medical care and burden of disease. A survey was conducted to evaluate the perceptions among the general patient population with asthma and/or eczema regarding disease and treatment burden and barriers to adequate care.
Methods: An online survey was completed by market research panelists in the USA between March 24, 2020 and April 6, 2020.
