Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) not only causes neurological deficits but also influences extracerebral organ functions. The Logistic Organ Dysfunction System (LODS) reliably captures organ dysfunctions and predicts mortality of critically ill patients. This study investigated LODS in the setting of aSAH as a surrogate marker for early brain injury (EBI).

In order to gain an initial impression of the current parasite situation in wildlife enclosures across Germany, 17 enclosures of six animal species were examined for parasites in soil and fecal samples in seven facilities. Of particular interest in this context are helminths and protists. Despite the potential risks, however, there are only a few studies on parasites in animal enclosures due to the taboo subject.

Mutations in the gene encoding the alpha3 Na+/K+-ATPase isoform (ATP1A3) lead to movement disorders that manifest with dystonia, a common neurological symptom with many different origins, but for which the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. We have generated an ATP1A3 mutant mouse that displays motor impairments and a hyperexcitable motor phenotype compatible with dystonia. We show that neurons harboring this mutation are compromised in their ability to extrude raised levels of intracellular sodium, highlighting a profound deficit in neuronal sodium homeostasis.

The striatin-interacting phosphatase and kinase (STRIPAK) complex is involved in the regulation of many developmental processes in eukaryotic microorganisms and all animals, including humans. STRIPAK is a component of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), a highly conserved serine-threonine phosphatase composed of catalytic subunits (PP2Ac), a scaffolding subunit (PP2AA) and various substrate-directing B regulatory subunits. In particular, the B''' regulatory subunit called striatin has evoked major interest over the last 20 years.

Caregivers often modulate their speech when interacting with infants, adapting a register that has been suggested to have attentional, affective and didactic purposes. The present preregistered study examined the longitudinal trajectories of a diverse range of acoustic features of infant-directed speech (IDS) and compared these with adult-directed speech (ADS), in Norwegian parents of 6- to 18-month-old infants. Sixty-nine families participated.

Studying dynamics of the dissociative adsorption and recombinative desorption of hydrogen on copper surfaces has shaped our atomic-scale understanding of surface chemistry, yet experimentally determining the thermal rates for these processes, which dictate the outcome of catalytic reactions, has been impossible so far. In this work, we determine the thermal rate constants for dissociative adsorption and recombinative desorption of hydrogen on Cu(111) between 200 and 1000 K using data from reaction dynamics experiments. Contrary to current understanding, our findings demonstrate the predominant role of quantum tunneling, even at temperatures as high as 400 K.

Addressing the escalating challenges of climate change necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing carbon sequestration rates (CSRs) in forest ecosystems. Although the impact of various biotic factors, environmental, and anthropogenic factors on CSRs over different time scales is well recognized, their precise roles remain poorly defined. This study aims to clarify the mechanistic relationships between CSRs and these factors in large-scale natural temperate forests in northeastern China.

Thirty-two forensic persons who have committed sexual offenses against children (FP-SOC), 26 non-forensic persons of whom most have committed sexual offenses against children (NFP-SOC), 14 forensic persons who have not committed sexual offenses against children but have committed other offenses (FP-NSOC), and 53 non-forensic persons who have not committed sexual offenses against children (NFP-NSOC) were instructed to solve a cognitive task, while sexual distractors were presented simultaneously. Behavioral performance and eye movements were measured. FP-SOC and NFP-SOC exhibit same age preference patterns for children and adults, but both groups differ significantly with respect to sexual attentional control.

The field of ferroptosis research has grown exponentially since this form of cell death was first identified over a decade ago. Ferroptosis, an iron- and ROS-dependent type of cell death, is controlled by various metabolic pathways, including but not limited to redox and calcium (Ca) homeostasis, iron fluxes, mitochondrial function and lipid metabolism. Importantly, therapy-resistant tumors are particularly susceptible to ferroptotic cell death, rendering ferroptosis a promising therapeutic strategy against numerous malignancies.

Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs) are a diverse set of neurological disorders characterized by progressive spasticity and weakness in the lower limbs caused by damage to the axons of the corticospinal tract. More than 88 genetic mutations have been associated with HSP, yet the mechanisms underlying these disorders are not well understood. We replicated the pathophysiology of one form of HSP known as spastic paraplegia 15 (SPG15) in zebrafish.

Providing pigs with organic enrichment material is important for satisfying pigs' natural explorative behavior to prevent injurious tail biting and thus increase animal welfare in general. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of automatically supplied enrichment material of three different types (alfalfa pellets, oat bran pellets, or a mixture of both) and different enrichment frequencies (2, 4, or 6 supplies/day) on the behavior, the occurrence of tail biting, and daily weight gains of weaner pigs. The results showed significant effects and interactions of enrichment material, frequency and the time of day on the exploratory behavior, the occurrence of tail biting, and daily weight gains.

Background: Perivascular space (PVS) enlargement in ageing and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the drivers of such a structural change in humans require longitudinal investigation. Elucidating the effects of demographic factors, hypertension, cerebrovascular dysfunction, and AD pathology on PVS dynamics could inform the role of PVS in brain health function as well as the complex pathophysiology of AD.
Methods: We studied PVS in centrum semiovale (CSO) and basal ganglia (BG) computationally over three to four annual visits in 503 participants (255 females; mean = 70.

The Xenopus Eleutheroembryonic Thyroid Assay (XETA, OECD TG 248) was established as an alternative to the Amphibian Metamorphosis Assay (AMA, OECD TG 231) for the analysis of (anti-)thyroid activity of chemicals. The XETA is a New Approach Method (NAM) since the embryonic life stages used in the assay are not yet feeding independently, which renders the assay to be considered a non-animal test under many national laws. Physiologically, the used embryos are not fully developed yet, and thus there are limitations to the XETA for detecting certain mechanisms along the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis.

In this study, we utilize genetic algorithms to develop a realistic implicit solvent ultra-coarse-grained (ultra-CG) membrane model comprising only three interaction sites. The key philosophy of the ultra-CG membrane model SMARTINI3 is its compatibility with realistic membrane proteins, for example, modeled within the Martini coarse-grained (CG) model, as well as with the widely used GROMACS software for molecular simulations. Our objective is to parameterize this ultra-CG model to accurately reproduce the experimentally observed structural and thermodynamic properties of Phosphatidylcholine (PC) membranes in real units, including properties such as area per lipid, area compressibility, bending modulus, line tension, phase transition temperature, density profile, and radial distribution function.

Musical sequences are correlated dynamical processes that may differ depending on musical styles. We aim to quantify the correlations through power spectral analysis of pitch sequences in a large corpus of musical compositions as well as improvised performances. Using a multitaper method we extend the power spectral estimates down to the smallest possible frequencies optimizing the tradeoff between bias and variance.
