Background: Identification of markers for prediction of the clinical course of diabetic nephropathy remains a major challenge in disease management. We established a proteomics approach for identification of diabetic nephropathy-related biomarkers in urine.
Methods: We used SELDI-TOF mass spectrometry and SAX2 protein arrays to compare protein profiles from urine of 4 defined patient groups.

Background And Purpose: MR imaging has played an increasingly important role in the diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) since basal ganglia abnormalities on T2-weighted images have been described; thus, the aim of our study was to compare the value of different MR images in the diagnosis of CJD.
Methods: One hundred fifty-seven patients with CJD underwent MR imaging examinations. Ninety-two patients were neuropathologically confirmed, and 65 were clinically classified as having CJD through the CJD Surveillance Unit (probability of 95%).

Background: Epithelial-mesenchymal transformation (EMT) plays an important role in embryonic development and tumorigenesis and has been described in organ remodeling during fibrogenesis. In the kidney, EMT can be induced efficiently in cultured proximal tubular epithelium by coincubation of transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1 and epidermal growth factor (EGF). Recently, we also have observed overexpression of basic fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) protein and mRNA in human kidneys with marked interstitial fibrosis.

Renal interstitial fibrosis is characterized by increased proliferation of fibroblasts and excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix. Mast cell tryptase has been implicated in the development of tissue fibrosis in skin and lungs. However, the significance of mast cell tryptase in human renal diseases has not been investigated.

Objectives: To assess the prognostic value of determining anti-endotoxin core antibodies (EndoCab) immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgM in medical patients with sepsis syndrome in order to identify patient subgroups that may profit from endotoxin-neutralizing therapy. The findings were correlated with clinical outcome, endotoxin levels and sepsis score.
Design: Cohort study with a follow-up period of 30 days.

Progressive renal disease poses an increasing problem for the medical community. Though the causes of end-stage renal failure are multiple, the histologic pictures of chronic renal disease are remarkably similar being characterized by interstitial infiltration, fibrosis, tubular atrophy and dilatation. This similarity points to a final common pathway.

The results of treating trigeminal neuralgia with percutaneous retroganglionic glycerol rhizotomy in 319 patients from an overall series of 394 patients with 459 operations carried out over a period of 5 1/2 years are reported. Idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia was the diagnosis in 252 patients. 34 patients had trigeminal neuralgia associated with multiple sclerosis.
