The 1990 resolution by the UN General Assembly committed member states to provide health-care equity for people in prison, who are included in the global goals to control HIV and eliminate hepatitis C virus (HCV) by 2030. WHO has set ambitious HCV elimination targets by including people who inject drugs (PWID), yet has not prioritised PWID who are incarcerated, a substantial population who have or are at risk for HCV infection. Human rights principles of health-care equity stipulate that "prisoners should enjoy the same standards of health care that are available in the community, without discrimination on the grounds of their legal status".

Division of Anaesthesia, Department of Acute Care Medicine, Geneva University Hospitals-University of Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland; Health Services Management and Research Unit, Department of Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine, Monash University, The Alfred Centre, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Electronic address:

A recent study by Fowler and colleagues identified increased utilisation of healthcare resources among patients, mostly from deprived social areas with chronic diseases, undergoing emergency and high-risk surgery. Reasons for these findings include the intrinsic risk of surgery, postoperative complications, and the need for chronically ill patients to have their usual treatment resumed after surgery. To improve the overall outcome of surgery in this category of patients, a number of elements in the process of care should be adjusted.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to assess how MRI findings relate to hearing loss and recovery in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) from 2005 to 2017.
  • Out of 266 patients analyzed, a significant portion experienced additional symptoms like tinnitus and vertigo, and many had cardiovascular risk factors.
  • The patients were classified into three MRI groups—normal, peripheral auditory system lesions, and central nervous system lesions—and the type of MRI findings did not significantly impact the level of initial hearing loss or recovery outcomes.

Discipline of Clinical Psychology, University of Technology Sydney, Sydney, NSW, Australia; School of Psychiatry, University of New South Wales, Sydney, NSW, Australia.

The validity of the constructs of problematic Internet or smartphone use and Internet or smartphone addiction has been extensively debated. The spectrum hypothesis posits that problematic online behaviors (POBs) may be conceptualized within a spectrum of related yet distinct entities. To date, the hypothesis has received preliminary support, and further robust empirical studies are still needed.

The emergence of each novel SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern (VOC) requires investigation of its potential impact on the performance of diagnostic tests in use, including antigen-detecting rapid diagnostic tests (Ag-RDTs). Although anecdotal reports have been circulating that the newly emerged Omicron-BA.1 variant is in principle detectable by Ag-RDTs, few data on sensitivity are available.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted health care for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and necessitated strategies to minimize contact with facilities. We aimed to examine factors influencing implementation of remote (non-facility-based) delivery approaches for people with hypertension and/or diabetes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), to inform NCD care delivery during health service disruption, including humanitarian crises. Our narrative review used a hermeneutic and purposive approach, including primary studies conducted in LMICs, which assessed implementation factors influencing remote NCD care delivery.

Drug interactions with apixaban: A systematic review of the literature and an analysis of VigiBase, the World Health Organization database of spontaneous safety reports.

Pharmacol Res Perspect

October 2020

Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology, Intensive Care, and Emergency Medicine, Geneva University Hospitals & University of Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland.

Apixaban, a direct oral anticoagulant, has emerged over the past few years because it is considered to have a low risk of drug-drug interactions compared to vitamin K antagonists. To better characterize these interactions, we systematically reviewed studies evaluating the drug-drug interactions involving apixaban and analyzed the drug-drug interactions resulting in an adverse drug reaction reported in case reports and VigiBase. We systematically searched Medline, Embase, and Google Scholar up to 20 August 2018 for articles that investigated the occurrence of an adverse drug reaction due to a potential drug interacting with apixaban.
