: Parathyroid cancer is a very rare endocrine tumor, especially in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism due to end stage renal disease failure. This pathology is difficult to diagnose preoperatively because it has nonspecific clinical manifestations and paraclinical aspects. Our study of the literature identified 34 reported cases of parathyroid carcinoma over the last 40 years in patients undergoing dialysis.

Serological analysis of tumor markers has emerged as a non-invasive method for monitoring cancer patients, including tumor recurrence and response to treatment. Tumor markers have the potential to aid in both the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer, but their most important role currently lies in the monitoring of tumor progression. Tumor markers can also provide valuable information on treatment effectiveness, with changes in plasma values indicating tumor regression or progression.

University of Health Sciences, Dışkapı Yıldırım Beyazıt Training and Research Hospital, Department of Internal Medicine, Medical Intensive Care Unit, Ankara, Turkey.

Central catheterization can be placed in critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) for some purposes such as dialysis, nutrition, and hemodynamic monitoring. Air embolism is a very rare complication of central catheterization. A 46-year-old male patient with no known comorbidities underwent laparoscopic total colectomy and protective loop ileostomy for colon cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • The ChoCO-W study aimed to examine the effects of COVID-19 on the clinical presentation and outcomes of acute cholecystitis, particularly focusing on the rise of gangrenous cases during the pandemic.
  • Over 2,800 patients from 42 countries were enrolled, with a notable 6.9% testing positive for COVID-19, revealing a significantly higher prevalence of preexisting conditions and more severe outcomes in this group compared to those without the virus.
  • Patients with COVID-19 experienced higher postoperative complications (32.2% vs. 11.7%), longer hospital stays (13.21 days vs. 6.51 days), increased mortality rates (13.4% vs. 1.7

Protein Phosphatase 2a Inhibits Gastric Cancer Cell Glycolysis by Reducing MYC Signaling.

Cell Biochem Biophys

March 2023

Department of General Surgery Clinic 7, Handan Central Hospital, Handan, 056001, Hebei Province, China.

Aerobic glycolysis, also known as the Warburg effect, has emerged as a hallmark of cancer and is associated with tumor progression and unfavorable clinical outcomes in cancer patients. PP2A is a highly conserved eukaryotic serine/threonine protein phosphatase that functions as a tumor suppressor in a variety of human cancers. However, the relationship between PP2A and the Warburg effect in gastric cancer has yet to be fully understood.

Background: After more than 20 years since laparoscopy was proposed as a solution for one of the most common surgical pathologies, inguinal hernia, the choice of an intra- or extraperitoneal approach has remained a highly debated topic.

Purpose And Objectives: This study aimed at analyzing the feasibility of the extraperitoneal approach, by routine for this team/ and answering the question of whether this type of approach can be considered a safe one. Although indications for an intra- or extraperitoneal approach largely overlap, it may also be a matter of surgeon preference in choosing one technique.

Introduction: Previous studies have demonstrated that one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) is not inferior to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) in treating obesity. However, high level evidence comparing the efficacy and safety of both procedures in type 2 diabetes (T2D) treatment is still lacking, which is another main aim of bariatric surgery. The presented trial has been designed to aim at investigating the superiority of OAGB over the reference procedure RYGB in treating T2D as primary endpoint.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how phenytoin, a medication, affects the healing of colorectal anastomoses in rats, focusing on different application methods: intraperitoneal, oral, and rectal.
  • It measures the impact of phenytoin on gene expressions related to healing and compares bursting pressure and tissue examination results between treated and control rats.
  • Findings reveal that phenytoin application significantly increases anastomotic bursting pressure and enhances expression of genes involved in healing, particularly FGF2 and TGF-β, indicating potential benefits for improving recovery following colonic surgery.

Purpose: T stage plays an important role in the classification of subgroups in stage II colon cancer. Patients with pathologic T4 are at high risk of recurrence and it is recommended to include adjuvant chemotherapy in the treatment plan, while this is not necessary in pathologic T3. There is a discrepancy between the surgical T stage (sT), as determined by the surgeon in the operative field, and pathologic T stage (pT).

August 2022

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, The University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana 46556, United States.

The 90 kDa heat shock protein (Hsp90) belongs to a group of molecular chaperones that regulate homeostasis via the folding of nascent polypeptides into their biologically active proteins, many of which are involved in cancer development and progression. As a result, inhibition of Hsp90 is an exciting area of research for the treatment of cancer. However, most of the 18 Hsp90 N-terminal inhibitors evaluated in clinical trials exhibited deleterious side effects and toxicities.
