The Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score is a widely used tool for quantifying hepatic dysfunction, providing greater accuracy and a wider range of values compared to the Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) score, being also used in prioritizing patients who are eligible for liver transplantation. This study assessed the correlation between the MELD score and the European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation II (EuroSCORE II), a reliable system for categorizing risk levels in patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. This retrospective study analyzed data from 589 patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) at the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases 'Prof.

Background: This study aims to examine the effect of Leukocyte-Rich Platelet-Rich Plasma (LR-PRP) on bacterial translocation in an experimental peritonitis model in rats. Secondary peritonitis occurs due to the loss of integrity in the mucosal barrier of the gastrointestinal system, resulting from contamination of the peritoneal cavity by microorganisms. LR-PRP has been shown to have positive anti-infectious, immunomodulatory, and angiogenetic effects.

  • People are increasingly exposed to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from mobile phones, raising concerns about potential health effects, particularly on reproduction.
  • A study tested the effects of EMR (4.5 GB; 2600 MHz) on rat ovaries by dividing 18 female rats into control, stand-by, and dialing groups over 8 weeks.
  • The results showed follicular degeneration and increased expression of specific proteins related to cell death (Caspase-3) and cell survival (Beclin-1) in the EMR-exposed groups, suggesting that mobile phone radiation can harm ovarian health.

  • The study investigates the safety of omitting axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) in patients with residual axillary disease after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), focusing on those treated with sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) or targeted axillary dissection (TAD).
  • An analysis of two multicenter cohorts (MF18-02 and MF18-03) included 501 patients who received regional nodal irradiation and achieved a complete clinical response to NAC.
  • Results showed low recurrence rates (0.4% axillary, 0.8% locoregional) and no significant differences in disease-free or disease-specific survival between SLNB and TAD, suggesting ALND omission is safe if patients receive

The Management of Wound Healing in Infections after Hip Arthoplasty Using Stimulan and Negative Pressure Wound Therapy.

Diagnostics (Basel)

October 2024

Department of General Surgery, Faculty of Medicine "Dunarea de Jos", 800008 Galati, Romania.

Background: medical teams continue to face challenges with infections following hip replacement surgery, whether they occur shortly after the procedure or months or years later. Certain medical conditions like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and obesity are risk factors that make patients more susceptible to infections. Traditional intervention methods such as DAIR, one-step, or two-step procedures are being enhanced and refined to ensure quicker and more effective treatment.

Introduction: Surgical-related injuries are frequent, in fact the reported percentage of musculoskeletal disorders in surgeons is between 47% and 87%. These conditions are caused by long periods of standing, incorrect postures, repeated movements, little rest between operations, the lack of integrated operator rooms, the correct number and arrangement of monitors and the use of non-ergonomic instruments. This survey aims to assess the Italian overview both highlighting how prevalent surgical-related injury is in our surgeons and whether there is an operating room ergonomics education program in Italian surgical specialty schools.

Skin malignant melanoma (MM) is one of the most frequent and aggressive neoplasia worldwide. Its associated high mortality rates are mostly due to its metastases, while diagnosis and treatment of MM in its early stages is of favorable prognostic. Even skin superficial MMs at incipient local stages can already present with lymph node invasion and distant metastases.

Background: Metastatic pancreatic lesions (MPLs) are relatively uncommon, constituting 2 to 5% of all pancreatic tumors. They often manifest as solitary lesions without distinct clinical symptoms, usually identified incidentally during radiologic imaging for the surveillance of prior malignancies. Differentiating these lesions from primary pancreatic tumors presents a significant challenge due to their nonspecific presentation.

: In the therapeutic strategy of rectal cancer, radiotherapy has consolidated its important position and frequent use in current practice due to its indications as neoadjuvant, adjuvant, definitive, or palliative treatment. In recent years, total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) has been established as the preferred regimen compared to concurrent neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT). In relation to better outcomes, the percentage of patients who achieved pathological complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant treatment is higher in the case of TNT.

  • This study compares two surgical methods, Hartmann's procedure (HP) and resection with primary anastomosis (RPA), for treating acute left-sided colonic emergencies among 1215 patients from 204 centers globally.
  • Results showed that while HP was the more common treatment (57.3%), RPA was favored for younger patients with fewer health issues and those needing surgery sooner.
  • The study concluded that although HP is still widely used, RPA might be the better option, emphasizing the importance of patient characteristics and surgeon experience in determining treatment choice.
