Prenatal identification of small-for-gestational age and risk of neonatal morbidity and stillbirth.

Ultrasound Obstet Gynecol

May 2020

AUDIPOG (Association des Utilisateurs de Dossiers Informatisés en Pédiatrie, Obstétrique et Gynécologie), Faculty of Medicine RTH Laennec, Lyon, France.

Objective: To assess whether prenatal identification of small-for-gestational age (SGA) was associated with lower rates of the primary composite outcome of stillbirth, death in the delivery room or neonatal complications, and secondary outcomes of the composite outcome according to gestational age at delivery, stillbirth and low 5-min Apgar score.

Methods: This historical cohort study included women who had a singleton delivery (≥ 32 weeks) between 1994 and 2011 at one of 247 French maternity units. We excluded pregnancies terminated medically, infants with malformations or with missing data on estimated fetal weight or birth weight, and women with missing delivery data.

During laparoscopy using only 5mm trocars, it may sometimes be necessary to perform a suture, which usually requires the use of a 10mm or 12mm trocar with a reducer. Thus, the 5-mm trocar has to be replaced by a larger diameter device. In order to avoid the trocar change in these situations, a trick that is easily realizable for performing one or more stitches is described.

Background: The Demons-Meigs syndrome should usually be evoked in case of presence of a typical triad: abdominopelvic mass, ascites and hydrothorax. Its diagnosis appears crucial to prevent the realization of unnecessary surgical procedures.

Case Presentation: A 32-year-old woman presented in April 2012 to the emergency department of our maternity unit (General Hospital, Thiers, France) with an abdominal distension mimicking the symptoms of a pregnancy at term.

Introduction And Hypothesis: Polypropylene (PP) mesh shrinkage represents a serious complication, as a significant cause of pain and recurrence of pelvic organ prolapse or ventral hernias, frequently requiring several surgical interventions. The retraction seems to be caused by the host, in response to the implantation, through the occurrence of periprosthetic adhesions and fibrosis. We hypothesized that avoiding the postoperative adhesions can prevent PP mesh shrinkage.
