Redox status (RS) perturbations and inflammation are fundamental features of chronic kidney disease (CKD) that are substantially exacerbated in end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This study aimed at investigating the efficacy of a 6-month intradialytic exercise training program on RS, inflammation and physical performance in patients with ESRD. Twenty hemodialysis (HD) patients (17 males, three females) were randomly assigned to either an intradialytic training (bedside cycling) group (TR; = 10) or a control group (CON; = 10) for 6 months.

Background And Aim: Νon-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is estimated to be the most common cause of end-stage liver disease in the next years. Vitamin E has shown beneficial effects as a possible "scavenger" of oxidative stress products, which play a major role in pathogenesis of the disease. The purpose of the present meta-analysis is to investigate the effects of vitamin E supplementation in biochemical and histological parameters in adult patients with NAFLD.

Medicine shortages result in great risk for the continuity of patient care especially for antimicrobial treatment, potentially enhancing resistance rates and having a higher economic impact. This study aims to identify, describe, assess, and assign risk priority levels to potential failures following substitution of antimicrobial treatment due to shortages among European hospitals. Furthermore, the study investigated the impact of corrective actions on risk reduction so as to provide guidance and improve future patient care.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic disease of unknown origin. We describe a case of sputum smear-and culture-negative tuberculosis that was diagnosed with histological examination of a surgical lung biopsy, as other entities such as sarcoidosis could not be excluded after extended investigation. Even a typical lambda sign on gallium scintigraphy proved to be misleading.

Aim: In the present retrospective study in scoliosis surgery, we hypothesized that application of a protocol for blood and fluid management, based on goal-directed fluid therapy, cell salvage and tranexamic acid, could lead to reduced allogeneic red blood cells transfusion.
Methods And Material: Thirty-five patients, with American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I/III, between 14 and 18 years scheduled for elective orthopedic surgery of scoliosis, with a planned intensive care unit admission, were enrolled in a retrospective observational study. Patients were divided in two groups.

The neuropeptide Oxytocin (ΟΤ) is involved as a neurohormone, a neurotransmitter, or a neuromodulator in an extensive range of central and peripheral effects, complex emotional and social human behaviors, memory and learning processes. It is implicated in homeostatic, neuroadaptive processes associated with stress responses and substance use via interactions with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the dopamine mesolimbic reward stress system. This chapter reviews the preclinical and clinical literature on the complicated relationships between endogenous and exogenous opioids and ΟΤ systems and attempts to highlight key findings to date on the effectiveness of intranasal OT administration to treat opioid use disorders.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a complex disorder that primarily affects the lungs and is characterized not only by local pulmonary, but also by systemic inflammation which promotes the development of extrapulmonary and cardiovascular co-morbidities. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and ARBs (angiotensin receptor blockers) are widely used drugs in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, with growing evidence suggesting potential benefits in COPD patients. The purpose of this review is to describe the correlation of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) with COPD pathophysiology and to present the latest data regarding the potential role of RAS blockers in COPD.

Background: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic, fibrosing interstitial pneumonia of unknown origin. Despite the fact that the guidelines on the diagnosis and management of the disease were updated in 2015, incorporating novel agents recently introduced in the therapeutic approach of IPF, there is a lack of data on the epidemiology, disease status, and treatment in clinical practice. Contemporary data provided by national registries in IPF provide valuable information to guide clinical management of the disease in the real-world setting, adjusted to the local needs.

The present article reports three clinical cases in order to elucidate the diversity of the pathophysiological mechanisms that underlie rheumatoid arthritis associated pulmonary hypertension. The condition's three major causes are: interstitial lung disease, vasculitis, and chronic thromboembolic disease, but it should be noted that the multiple pulmonary manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis, can all contribute to chronic lung disease or hypoxia. The first patient in this report suffered from moderate restriction due to fibrosis and was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension during an episode of life threatening hypoxia.

For patients with intermediate-2 or high risk [according to the International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS)] myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), azacitidine treatment offers hematologic improvement (HI) but also has the potential to modify the natural disease course. 'RETRO-AZA-MDS-001', a retrospective chart review study was conducted from February to November 2012 across 17 hematology hospital sites of Greece, aiming to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety profile of azacitidine in IPSS intermediate-2/high risk adult MDS patients in routine care. A total of 88 patients (median age 74.

Hypoxia is the lack of sufficient oxygenation of tissue, imposing severe stress upon cells. It is a major feature of many pathological conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, cerebral hemorrhage, perinatal asphyxia and can lead to cell death due to energy depletion and increased free radical generation. The present study investigates the effect of hypoxia on the unfolded protein response of the cell (UPR), utilizing a 16-h oxygen-glucose deprivation protocol (OGD) in a PC12 cell line model.
