Smoking History and Nicotine Dependence Alter Sleep Features in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome.

There are many aspects in the relationship between smoking and sleep that have not been investigated thoroughly yet, especially in regards to obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). In this cross-sectional study, 2359 participants, who have visited the sleep clinic of our hospital during a 13-year period and were former or current smokers, were included. Their smoking history, measured in packyears of smoking, and their nicotine dependence, measured with the Fagerström scale, were correlated with various epidemiological and sleep-related variables.

Littoral cell angioma of the spleen in a 70-year-old male patient with myelodysplastic syndrome: a case report.

Introduction: Littoral cell angioma (LCA) is a new subtype of vascular tumor, which has been reported infrequently worldwide. It is associated with visceral malignancies and other immunologic conditions.

Clinical Case: We present a case of a 70-year-old Caucasian male with a 6-year history of myelodysplastic syndrome, which was investigated for splenomegaly and pancytopenia.

Perineal Rectosigmoidectomy (Altemeier's Procedure) in the Treatment of Strangulated Rectal Prolapse: A Case Series and Literature Review.

Background: Rectal prolapse (RP) predominantly affects women over the age of 50 and presents as mucosal, internal, or full thickness prolapse. Strangulated rectal prolapse requires immediate medical intervention, and surgical treatment options include both abdominal and perineal approaches. We aim to present a case series of perineal rectosigmoidectomy performed urgently due to strangulation and argue that Altemeier's procedure is the preferred method for treating strangulated rectal prolapse.

European Quality Markers in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialty Training: Defining Standards.

According to the European Union (EU) Directive 2005/36, the medical specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) exists with two possible formats: dual degree OMFS called Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (DOMFS) - basic medical and basic dental training and single medical degree Maxillofacial Surgery (MFS). Within the EU and across all of Europe, differences in the nature and quality of OMFS training coexist. By implementing the highest possible standards of training, patient care can be improved.

Cryoprobe Placement Using Electromagnetic Navigation System (IMACTIS® CT-Navigation™) for Cryoablation Treatment of Upper Kidney Pole Lesions and Adrenal Metastases: Experience from a Single-Center, 4-Year Study.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the use of the IMACTIS CT-Navigation™-electromagnetic navigation system (EMNS) in cryoablation CT-guided procedures under local anesthesia for the treatment of upper kidney pole and adrenal lesions. We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with upper kidney pole lesions and adrenal metastases who underwent cryoablation using the IMACTIS-CT-EMNS between January 2019 and April 2023. The EMNS was used to guide the placement of the cryoprobes with CT guidance under local anesthesia.

The Interactions between Smoking and Sleep.

Smoking a cigarette before bed or first thing in the morning is a common habit. In this review, the relationship between smoking and sleep is investigated based on the existing literature. Out of 6504 unique items that were identified via a PubMed search related to smoking and sleep, 151 were included in this review.

Low-grade intraductal carcinoma in minor salivary glands: A case report and clinical insights.

Rationale: Low-grade intraductal carcinoma (LG-IC), is a rare malignant tumour of the salivary glands which has a very good prognosis and must be differentiated from the other types of salivary gland malignant tumours, which have a totally different behaviour and a worse prognosis.

Patient Concerns: A case is presented of a 52-year-old woman who was first diagnosed and treated in another clinic in 2019 for an LG-IC in the left submandibular gland space. Two years later, she was admitted to our department with a new lesion, this time in the upper jaw lip on the left side, which also turned out to be LG-IC.

This meta-analysis compares the efficacy and safety of inhaled systemic corticosteroids for COPD exacerbations.Following a pre-registered protocol, we appraised eligible randomised controlled trials (RCTs) according to Cochrane methodology, performed random-effects meta-analyses for all outcomes prioritised in the European Respiratory Society COPD core outcome set and rated the certainty of evidence as per Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation methodology.We included 20 RCTs totalling 2140 participants with moderate or severe exacerbations.

Background: Smoking poses the most common risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and aggravates disease progression. Tobacco dependence inhibits smoking cessation and may affect smoking patterns that increase tobacco exposure and predispose to lung function decline.

Cytoreductive surgery (CRS), combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, has significantly improved survival outcomes in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis from colorectal cancer (CRC). Regorafenib is an oral agent administered in patients with refractory metastatic CRC. Our aim was to investigate the outcomes of intraperitoneal administration of regorafenib for intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPEC) or/and CRS in a rat model of colorectal peritoneal metastases regarding immunology and peritoneal cytology.

Cardiorenal syndrome and iron supplementation-more benefits than risks: a narrative review.

Intravenous iron administration has emerged as a crucial intervention for managing patients with cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) and iron deficiency, with or without the presence of anemia. Multiple studies have demonstrated the benefits of intravenous iron supplementation in improving anemia, symptoms, and functional capacity in patients with HF and iron deficiency. Furthermore, iron supplementation has been associated with a reduction in hospitalizations for HF exacerbation and the improvement of patients' quality of life and clinical outcomes.

Reconstruction of Bilateral Upper and Lower Eyelid Ectropion Caused by a Liquid Unblocker Chemical Burn.

Liquid drain unblockers, although meant to be used by professionals with protective equipment, are sometimes used in the household without any precautions. This could lead to severe chemical burns, as in the case we present with severe eyelid ectropion. This study aims to stress the need for preventive measures regarding the use of chemicals and for close observation and timely surgical intervention in chemical burn patients to prevent and limit disfigurement.

Antiplatelet Versus Anticoagulation Treatment in Patients With Fontan Operation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Thromboembolism is a significant complication after the Fontan procedure because of endothelial dysfunction, abnormal blood flow, and hypercoagulability. This is the reason why it is recommended for these patients to receive thromboprophylaxis. The aim of our study was to compare the efficacy and safety of antiplatelets versus anticoagulants in patients with a history of a Fontan procedure.

Critical evaluation and comparison of nutritional clinical practice guidelines for cancer patients.

Background: The growing incidence of cancer globally, and the importance of nutrition support for these patients, emphasize the need for the development of nutritional clinical practice guidelines and consensus papers (CPGs) in the field. Numerous relevant CPGs have been published by several organizations worldwide. The aim of this systematic review was to compare the content of the existing CPGs and evaluate the quality of their development using the AGREE-II tool.

Dexmedetomidine as an adjuvant to scalp block in patients undergoing elective craniotomy: A prospective randomized controlled trial.

Objective: Regional techniques minimize anesthetic requirements and their effects may be beneficial. There is a lack of consensus and evidence concerning alternative analgesia strategies for cranial neurosurgery. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of scalp block with or without dexmedetomidine combined with general anesthesia on hemodynamic stability, opioid consumption and postoperative pain in patients undergoing elective craniotomy.

Mucolytics for acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis explored the safety and effectiveness of mucolytics as an add-on treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations. Based on a pre-registered protocol and following Cochrane methods, we systematically searched for relevant randomised or quasi-randomised controlled trials (RCTs). We used the Risk of Bias v2 tool for appraising the studies and performed random-effect meta-analyses when appropriate.
