Introduction: Generally, glomus tumors are considered tumors of the autonomic system arising from chromaffin cells of the parasympathetic paraganglia of the skull base and neck. Glomus tympanicum is the most common primary tumor of the middle ear cavity and it arises from the paraganglia of the middle ear.

Case Report: We present a case of glomus tympanicum presented in a 70-year-old woman, complicated with facial nerve palsy which at first sight was misdiagnosed as cholesteatoma.

The aim of this study is to report a case of an unusual large aneurysm of the internal carotid approached with a doubly mandibular osteotomy in order to prove the significance and the excellent result of the specified surgical procedure because of the cooperation of maxillofacial and vascular surgeons. The double mandibular osteotomy is described, as well as the bypass of the aneurysm and the anastomosis of the peripheral edges of the artery. The double mandibular osteotomy can deliver the internal carotid artery from the bifurcation to its entrance to the skull base through the carotid canal and can offer the opportunity to the vascular surgeon to perform the anastomosis easily, quickly and safely.

Even though coagulopathy is a familiar entity in trauma, its relationship to burn injury remains unclear. Literature appears inconsistent as to the conclusions of the use of coagulation assays, either routine methods or newer viscoelastic coagulation assays (VCAs), thromboelastography (TEG) and rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM), for prediction of patients' coagulation status and mortality. The use of diagnostic assays as mortality markers will be of great importance, since they would recognize at early stages patients with great medical demands and objectify burn injury severity.

The tumor microenvironment plays a key role in progression of tumorigenesis, tumor progression, and metastasis. Accumulating data reveal that dendritic cells (DCs) appear to play a key role in the development and progression of metastatic neoplasia by driving immune system dysfunction and establishing immunosuppression, which is vital for tumor evasion of host immune response. Consequently, in this review, we will discuss the function of tumor-infiltrating DCs in immune cell signaling pathways that lead to treatment resistance, tumor recurrence, and immunosuppression.

Contemporary asthma management requires a proactive and individualized approach, combining precision diagnosis and personalized treatment. The introduction of biologic therapies for severe asthma to everyday clinical practice, increases the need for specific patient selection, prediction of outcomes and monitoring of these costly and long-lasting therapies. Several biomarkers have been used in asthma in disease identification, prediction of asthma severity and prognosis, and response to treatment.

Sleep During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Curr Psychiatry Rep

November 2022

Respiratory Failure Unit, G. Papanikolaou Hospital, Medical School, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece.

Purpose Of Review: We reviewed current evidence on the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on sleep of different populations.

Recent Findings: Several studies demonstrated that sleep deprivation may cause immune system dysregulation, which deteriorates the course of COVID-19. The increased prevalence of sleep disorders among COVID-19 patients has been associated with more severe disease and worse clinical outcomes.

The incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in children is constantly rising. Lifestyle modification is the cornerstone of the management of pediatric NAFLD. Even though several clinical trials have been conducted, there are barely any approved medications or supplements that can be used in the management of pediatric NAFLD.

Background: Chronic respiratory conditions are a prominent public health issue and thus, building a patient registry might facilitate both policy decision making and improvement of clinical management processes. Hellenic Registry of patients with Home Mechanical Ventilation (HR-HMV) was initiated in 2017 and a web-based platform is used to support patient data collection. Eighteen hospital departments (including sleep labs) across Greece participate in this initiative, focusing on recording data for both children and adult patients supported by mechanical ventilation at home, including patients with Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome (SAHS) under Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) therapy.

Introduction: Tumor immunotherapy is a key therapeutic paradigm for the treatment of several malignancies. However, in metastatic lung cancer, classical immunotherapy regimes are ineffective due to regulatory T cell (Treg)-related immunosuppression and tumor relapse.

Materials: To address this issue, we designed specific biocompatible Treg-targeted nanocarriers (NCs) as a model of immune-based nanotherapy, in order to target Treg-related immunosuppression in the lung tumor microenvironment.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignancy of the larynx. Surgical excision seems to be the preferred treatment modality; however, a paucity of high-evidence suggestions due to the small number of cases have been noted. Here we present the case of a 35-year-old woman with subglottic ACC who denied laryngectomy and opted for concurrent chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Article Synopsis
  • Lane-Hamilton Syndrome (LHS) is a serious medical condition that has a 14% mortality rate due to associated Idiopathic Pulmonary Hemosiderosis (IPH), and there is currently a lack of published research which leads to delayed diagnoses.
  • A study reviewed 80 LHS cases from 1971 to 2020, analyzing clinical presentations and outcomes in both children and adults, highlighting common symptoms like hemoptysis, dyspnea, and anemia.
  • Diagnosis often involves multiple methods, with treatments including prednisone and gluten-free diet (GFD), while some cases may require urgent interventions like intubation; understanding LHS better could improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes.*
