Objective: Combined antiretroviral treatment (cART) results in profound immunologic improvement, but it is unclear whether CD4 cell counts return to levels similar to those of HIV-negative individuals. We explore long-term CD4 cell count evolution post-cART and its association with baseline levels, virologic suppression, pre-cART cumulative viremia and other factors.
Design: Data were derived from the AMACS.

Introduction The current study aims to detect the incidence of occurrence of a morphological variant of the impression for the costoclavicular ligament, that is a faceted apophysis of the clavicle which participates in the formation of an aberrant joint, the so-called costoclavicular joint. Methods A material of 208 dry clavicles, 107 of right and 101 of left side derived from an osteological collection, was examined in order to detect the likely presence of facet apophysis at the clavicular area of impression for the costoclavicular ligament. Results We observed three cases of oval-shaped faceted apophysis, thus an incidence of 1.

A staging system was developed a decade ago for patients with Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WM), however, since then WM treatments have changed. A revised staging system could better capture prognosis of WM patients in the chemoimmunotherapy era. We developed a revised system based on data from 492 symptomatic patients with at least 3 years and a median of 7 years of follow up while an independent validation cohort included 229 symptomatic patients.

Echinococcus granulosus, first reported by Goeze in 1782, is the causative parasite of cystic echinococcosis (hydatidosis) especially for countries that are endemic areas. Since the 1970s, the incidence of echinococcosis in Greece has been very high. Nevertheless, with the implementation of special prevention measures in the 1980s, a large reduction in the incidence of hydatidosis meant that it reached European levels.

Background: Bone marrow (BM) samples obtained from minimal residual disease (MRD)-negative children with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) were used in our laboratory as negative biological controls for the development of a neuroblastoma (NBL) flow-cytometric (FC) protocol. The accidental, but systematic, identification of rare cell populations (RCP) mimicking NBL cells (CD45 /CD56 ) in these samples indicated the need for their thorough immunophenotypic identification, in order to elucidate their possible interference in NBL-MRD assessment.
Procedure: RCP observed in BM samples from 14 children recovering from BM aplasia due to intensive chemotherapy for B-ALL were investigated with the following markers: CD81, CD200, CD24, GD2, CD73, CD13, CD90, CD146, CD9, CD117, CD10, CD99, and NG2.

James Douglas (1675-1742) is considered one of the most important anatomists of the eighteenth century; he introduced meticulous and scientific methods for studying human anatomy. He is known for the "pouch of Douglas," but his contribution is much more important. He deepened our knowledge of the anatomy of the peritoneum, located new muscles, and evolved the already recorded knowledge in a way that it could be implemented in surgery.

Background: The childhood peak of brain tumors suggests that early-life exposures might have a role in their etiology. Hence, we examined in the Greek National Registry for Childhood Hematological Malignancies and Solid tumors (NARECHEM-ST) whether perinatal and early-life risk factors influence the risk of childhood brain tumors.
Methods: In a nationwide case-control study, we included 203 cases (0-14 years) with a diagnosis of brain tumor in NARECHEM-ST (2010-2016) and 406 age-, sex-, and center-matched hospital controls.

Euglycemic ketoacidosis is defined by the triad of high anion gap acidosis, increased plasma ketones, and the absence of hyperglycemia. Apart from diabetes mellitus, the disorder may occur in prolonged fasting, excessive alcohol consumption, pregnancy, and inborn errors of metabolism. Here, we highlight the diagnosis of euglycemic ketoacidosis in a pediatric nondiabetic patient with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 1 (Werdnig-Hoffmann disease), who, subsequently to her postoperative admission to the intensive care unit following a spinal surgery, developed high anion gap metabolic acidosis.
