This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to review the anatomical and visual outcomes following scleral buckling surgery in ROP of stages 4 and 5.

Introduction: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have emerged as a groundbreaking class of antidiabetic medications renowned for their glucose-lowering effects and cardiovascular benefits. Recent studies have suggested that SGLT2 inhibitors may extend their influence beyond glycemic control to impact adipose tissue physiology, particularly within the epicardial adipose depot. Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), an actively secretory organ surrounding the heart, has been implicated in the modulation of cardiovascular risk.

Jejunal Gossypiboma Mimicking a Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor: A Case of a Rare Iatrogenic Complication and Review of the Literature.

The term "gossypiboma" or "textiloma" is used to describe a mass of retained cotton matrix and the surrounding inflammatory response inside a body cavity following surgical intervention. The precise incidence of this phenomenon is uncertain, as cases are frequently underreported due to concerns related to medical malpractice. This rare complication poses a diagnostic dilemma due to the non-specific clinical and radiological features, which can result in significant morbidity and mortality.

Validation of gender-equity model for liver allocation (GEMA) and its sodium variant (GEMA-Na) in candidates for liver transplantation.

Background: The current allocation system for liver transplantation (LT) is based on the sickest-first policy, using objective variables to ensure equal priority. However, under-prioritization of female patients for LT, compared to males, is well demonstrated and new scores have been proposed to overcome this systematic bias. This study evaluated the ability of these new scores to predict the long-term outcomes of patients with cirrhosis.

Smoking History and Nicotine Dependence Alter Sleep Features in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome.

There are many aspects in the relationship between smoking and sleep that have not been investigated thoroughly yet, especially in regards to obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). In this cross-sectional study, 2359 participants, who have visited the sleep clinic of our hospital during a 13-year period and were former or current smokers, were included. Their smoking history, measured in packyears of smoking, and their nicotine dependence, measured with the Fagerström scale, were correlated with various epidemiological and sleep-related variables.

This study aimed to investigate whether genes with different modes of inheritance differ in the presence of promoter-enriched CGI loci. For each autosomal chromosome, the author searched for variations in the total number of diseases' phenotypes with autosomal dominant (AD) and recessive (AR) inheritance for a list of promoter-poor CGI (CGI-) and promoter-enriched CGI (CGI+) genes using the OMIM database. The Efficacy of Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography Scan (PET CT Scan) in the Diagnosis of Local Recurrence and Metastases in Surgical Patients with Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Last 5 Years (2020-2024).

Background/objectives: Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a highly aggressive tumor, as it is characterized by a high probability of local recurrence and distant metastases, even after surgical treatment. Early detection of disease recurrence is critical for improving long-term treatment outcomes and overall patient survival. By comparing different radiopharmaceuticals, this analysis aimed to strengthen existing guidelines and help bridge the gap between the recommendations of the ESMO and the ATA, highlighting the importance of PET/CT scanning in the postoperative follow-up of patients with MTC.

The typical clinical scenario involves presentation in postmenopausal women, with symptoms arising from tumor growth or metastasis.

Implementing digital respiratory technologies for people with respiratory conditions: A protocol for a scoping review.

The value of 'data-enabled', digital healthcare is evolving rapidly, as demonstrated in the COVID-19 pandemic, and its successful implementation remains complex and challenging. Harmonisation (within/between healthcare systems) of infrastructure and implementation strategies has the potential to promote safe, equitable and accessible digital healthcare, but guidance for implementation is lacking. Using respiratory technologies as an example, our scoping review process will capture and review the published research between 12th December 2013 to 12th December 2023.

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease in 7704 Individuals: An Analysis from the Greek Registry for the Prevalence of Familial Hypercholesterolemia (GRegistry-FH).

The intention of this study was to profile the cohort from the Greek Registry for the prevalence of Familial Hypercholesterolemia (GRegistry-FH) by estimating the prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD), myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, dyslipidemia, arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM), pre-DM, smoking, abnormal thyroid function (ATF), and lipid values. The GRegistry-FH is a prospective study involving door-to-door interviews conducted by trained interviewers. Overall, 7704 individuals aged ≥18 years, randomly selected from all the regions of Greece, participated.

Community-acquired respiratory viral infections (CARV) significantly impact patients with hematological malignancies (HM), leading to high morbidity and mortality. However, large-scale, real-world data on CARV in these patients is limited. This study analyzed data from the EPICOVIDEHA-EPIFLUEHA registry, focusing on patients with HM diagnosed with CARV during the 2023-2024 autumn-winter season.

Mentally ill offenders face stigma, being perceived as both dangerous and unpredictable. This leads to social discrimination, which causes devaluation, distancing, and unequal treatment towards them. Critical and dismissive attitudes of healthcare professionals and police toward these patients undermine their care, treatment, and prospects for rehabilitation.

Ogilvie's Syndrome Following Herpes Zoster Infection: A Comprehensive Review of the Literature.

This systematic review explores the association between herpes zoster (HZ) infection and Ogilvie's syndrome (acute colonic pseudo-obstruction), evaluating how varicella-zoster virus (VZV) reactivation may contribute to autonomic dysfunction leading to intestinal obstruction. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases up to October 2024, in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Eligible studies included case reports, clinical images, and letters reporting Ogilvie's syndrome secondary to HZ or VZV infection.

Electroencephalogram criticality in cognitive impairment: a monitoring biomarker?

Unlabelled: Critical states present scale-free dynamics, optimizing neuronal complexity and serving as a potential biomarker in cognitively impaired patients. We explored electroencephalogram (EEG) criticality in amnesic Mild Cognitive Impairment patients with clinical improvement in working memory, verbal memory, verbal fluency and overall executive functions after the completion of a 6-month prospective memory training. We compared "before" and "after" stationary resting-state EEG records of right-handed MCI patients (n = 17; 11 females), using the method of critical fluctuations and Haar wavelet analysis.

Renal survival and treatment of adult patients with Primary Focal Segmental glomerulosclerosis: A historical cohort study of the National Greek Registry.

Background/objective: Primary Focal and Segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is one of the most common causes of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. Our aim was to describe a large cohort of patients with primary FSGS, identify risk factors associated with worse renal survival and assess the impact of different immunosuppressive regiments on renal survival.

Methods: This was a historical cohort study of adults who were diagnosed with primary FSGS from March 26, 1982, to September 16, 2020.

Background: Loss of dorsolateral nigral hyperintensity (DNH) in iron-sensitive sequences of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), also described as "swallow tail sign" (STS) loss, has shown promising diagnostic value in Parkinson's Disease (PD) and Atypical Parkinsonian Syndromes (APS).

Sacroiliac Joint Tuberculosis With Concomitant Iliopsoas Abscess Suggesting a Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenge: A Case Report.

Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) tuberculosis (TB) is an infrequent clinical entity, especially in developed countries. The symptoms are usually non-specific, and therefore it may mimic a variety of degenerative and non-degenerative diseases, hampering the diagnosis. An interesting case of SIJ infection with psoas abscess in a 77-year-old male is presented in the current article.

Effects of natalizumab on oligoclonal bands in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with multiple sclerosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: Oligoclonal bands (OCBs) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are utilized for diagnosing multiple sclerosis (MS), as they are found in 95% of patients. Additionally, OCBs are linked to disease prognosis. The primary contributors to OCB production are long-lived plasma cells.

Performance of International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA) predictive models in preoperative discrimination between benign and malignant adnexal lesions: preliminary outcomes in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Greece.

Objectives: To apply the International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA) predictive models, the logistic regression model 2 (LR2) and the IOTA Assessment of Different NEoplasias in the adneXa (ADNEX), in patients with ovarian masses and to compare their performance in preoperative discrimination between benign and malignant adnexal lesions.

Methods: This was a retrospective diagnostic accuracy study with prospectively collected data, performed between January 2019 and December 2022, in a single tertiary gynecologic oncology center in Greece. The study included women with an adnexal lesion which underwent surgery within 6 months after of using the LR2 and ADNEX protocol to assess the risk of malignancy.
