This study investigates the crucial factors influencing the end-systolic and end-diastolic volumes in MRI volumetry and their direct effects on the derived functional parameters. Through the simultaneous acquisition of 2D-cine and 3D whole-heart slices in end-diastole and end-systole, we present a novel direct comparison of the volumetric measurements from both methods. A prospective study was conducted with 18 healthy participants.

To analyze short term outcomes of very low birth weight infants (VLBWI) born preterm after maternal preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome within the German Neonatal Network. The German Neonatal Network is a large population-based cohort study enrolling VLBWI since 2009. Two thousand six hundred and fifty two infants below 32 weeks of gestation born after maternal preeclampsia or HELLP syndrome and 13,383 infants born prematurely for other causes between 2009 and 2018 were included in our analysis.

Objectives To determine whether there is a cut off value of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) associated with a higher risk of meningitis in suspected early onset sepsis (EOS) (onset birth to 7 days of life). Methods A retrospective cohort study on neonates admitted in neonatal intensive care unit at McMaster Children's Hospital from January 2010 to 2017 and had lumbar puncture (LP) and CRP for workup of EOS. Included subjects had either (a) non-traumatic LP or (b) traumatic LP with cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) polymerase chain reaction or gram stain or culture-positive or had received antimicrobials for 21 days.

Background & Aims: In preterm infants, natural variation of breast milk composition makes it difficult to achieve recommended macronutrient intakes with standard fortification. Evidence suggests that nutritional deficiency induces poor postnatal growth. This study investigates impacts of target fortification on preterm growth and metabolism by adjusting breast milk macronutrients.

Background: Human milk analyzers are increasingly used to rapidly measure the macronutrient content in breast milk for individual target fortification, to reduce the risk of postnatal growth restriction. However, many milk analyzers are used without calibration, validation or quality assurance.
Aims: To investigate measurement quality between different human milk analyzers, to test whether accuracy and precision of devices can be improved by establishing individual calibration curves, and to assess long-term stability of measurements, following good clinical laboratory practice (GCLP).

Introduction: A lung assist device, which acts as an artificial placenta, can provide additional gas exchange for preterm and term newborns with respiratory failure. The concept of the lung assist device requires a large bore access via umbilical vessels to allow pumpless extracorporeal blood flow rates up to 30 mL/kg/min. After birth, constricted umbilical vessels need to be reopened for vascular access.

Background: Growth of preterm infants is monitored using fetal charts despite individual trajectories being downshifted postnatally by adaptational processes. The study aims to compare different approaches to create individualized postnatal trajectories.
Methods: Three approaches to achieve growth similar to healthy term infants at 42+0/7 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA) on World Health Organization growth standards (WHOGS) (target weight) were tested by comparing trajectories obtained by: 1) following birth percentiles (Birth-Weight-Percentile Approach); 2) following percentiles achieved at day of life 21 (Postnatal-Percentile Approach); 3) using day-specific fetal median growth velocities starting at day of life 21 (Fetal-Median-Growth Approach [FMGA]).

Background And Aims: Glut1 Deficiency (Glut1D) is caused by impaired glucose transport into brain. The resulting epileptic encephalopathy and movement disorders can be treated effectively by high-fat carbohydrate-restricted ketogenic diet therapies (KDT) mimicking fasting and providing ketones as an alternative cerebral fuel. Recently 6-24 months follow-ups of epileptic patients reported elevated blood lipids and intima thickening of the carotid artery raising concerns about potential cardiovascular risks by KDT.

Human milk analyzers can measure macronutrient content in native breast milk to tailor adequate supplementation with fortifiers. This article reviews all studies using milk analyzers, including (i) evaluation of devices, (ii) the impact of different conditions on the macronutrient analysis of human milk, and (iii) clinical trials to improve growth. Results lack consistency, potentially due to systematic errors in the validation of the device, or pre-analytical sample preparation errors like homogenization.

The short- and long-term effect of radiofrequency (RF) modification of the AV junction on ventricular rate and left ventricular function and the different types of ventricular response during energy application under autonomic nervous blockade were assessed in 28 patients with medically refractory atrial fibrillation. During the successful RF application, ventricular rate slowed progressively (type I response, ten patients) or accelerated at first and then slowed (type II response, 11 patients). Type II response was associated with a more anterior ablation site compared to Type I response.
