A 46- year-old woman presented a uterine adenosarcoma originating in the lower uterine segment. The diagnosis was made in an endometrial biopsy and confirmed in the pathological examination of the complete surgical specimen, both identifying heterologous malignant elements. In addition, complementary immunohistochemical studies were performed.

Background: Patients with obesity have an increased risk for adverse COVID-19 outcomes. Body mass index (BMI) does not acknowledge the health burden associated this disease. The performance of the Edmonton Obesity Staging System (EOSS), a clinical classification tool that assesses obesity-related comorbidity, is compared with BMI, with respect to adverse COVID-19 outcomes.

Unlabelled: The olfactory function shares the same cerebral structures as those involved in the origin and propagation of focal temporal lobe seizures. Likewise, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) allows the study of olfactory function. This suggests that by quantitatively studying the olfactory function with an olfactory paradigm through fMRI it is possible to identify the functional alteration produced by the epileptic focus.

The perception of risk has been a key element in the experiences, containment and differential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide. The complexity of this phenomenon requires the interdisciplinary integration of theoretical and methodological aspects, as this integration informs the objective of developing a mathematical proposal based on a conceptual model located within the social theory of risk at the micro-social level. The mathematical risk model used here was developed from a secondary analysis of a study of 12,649 individuals on the experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic in a population in which the quantity and quality of the information made it possible to define a risk factor and its relationship to emotions and the sources of information used.

Laboratory parameters display limited accuracy in predicting mortality in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients, as with serum albumin. Emerging evidence suggests that cytokine serum values may enhance the predictive capacity of albumin, especially interleukin (IL)-15. We thus investigated whether the use of the IL-15-to-albumin ratio enables improving mortality prediction at hospital admission in a large group of COVID-19 patients.

Objective: Mortality in pregnancy due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a current health priority in developing countries. Identification of clinical and sociodemographic risk factors related to mortality in pregnant women with COVID-19 could guide public policy and encourage such women to accept vaccination. We aimed to evaluate the association of comorbidities and socioeconomic determinants with COVID-19-related mortality and severe disease in pregnant women in Mexico.

Brucella melitensis is the main cause of human brucellosis worldwide and is considered the most virulent and neurotropic species. In Mexico, this species is considered endemic, being reported since the first decade of the 20th century. Here we present a case of subacute transverse myelitis with the isolation and identification of B.

Objective: In addition to the lungs, the placenta and the endothelium can be affected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) and placental growth factor (PlGF) are markers of endothelial dysfunction and could potentially serve as predictors of severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We aimed to investigate the association of serum concentrations of sFlt-1 and PlGF with the severity of COVID-19 in pregnancy.

We present the case of a 12-year-old girl with a history of vascular anomalies in the lower pelvic limbs and back, who developed unilateral deep vein thrombosis of the left lower limb after her pubertal development, she was diagnosed with May-Thurner syndrome with an abnormal venous drainage of the pelvic structures through the superior hemorrhoidal veins to the inferior mesenteric vein towards the porta system, this being a chronic manifestation. This kind of behavior has not been documented in the reviewed medical literature. Secondarily, balloon angioplasty was performed without breaking the stenotic ring.

Amoebiasis in humans is caused by the protozoan parasite which cytotoxic activity has been demonstrated on a wide variety of target cells. The process involves the adherence of the parasite to the cell, and such adherence is mediated by an amoebic surface lectin, known as Gal/GalNAc lectin. It is composed of heavy, intermediate, and light subunits.

Thromboembolic complications are associated with the infection by SARSCoV-2, with an estimated incidence up to 25%-30% of VTE in patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia. Here in, we present a case of a patient with severe pneumonia due to COVID-19 who is admitted with mild pneumothorax secondary to COVID-19 and high-intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism (PE), who underwent successfully a highflow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygenation bridge with subsequent successful half-doses of systemic thrombolysis with intravenous alteplase.

Increasing evidence has demonstrated that oxidized low-density lipoproteins (oxLDL) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) enhance accumulation of interleukin (IL)-1 beta-producing macrophages in atherosclerotic lesions. However, the potential synergistic effect of native LDL (nLDL) and LPS on the inflammatory ability and migration pattern of monocyte subpopulations remains elusive and is examined here. In vitro, whole blood cells from healthy donors (n = 20) were incubated with 100 μg/mL nLDL, 10 ng/mL LPS, or nLDL + LPS for 9 h.

Objective: The role of cholecystectomy as a risk factor in patients with metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate if long-standing cholecystectomy is associated with advanced liver fibrosis and cirrhosis in patients with recently diagnosed MAFLD.
Methods: A retrospective observational study was performed in four hospitals in Mexico including patients with recently diagnosed MAFLD and a history of cholecystectomy.

Centromedian thalamic nucleus is an intralaminar nucleus with vast connectivity to cerebral cortex and basal ganglia. It receives afferents from the brain stem through the central tegmental tract and is part of the diffuse thalamic projection system. Because the reticulothalamic system has been related to initiation and propagation of epileptic activity (centroencephalic theory of epilepsy), deep brain stimulation has been proposed to interfere with seizure genesis or propagation.

The coronavirus family has tropism for the Central Nervous System (CNS), however, there is no solid evidence demonstrating that the neurological effects of COVID-19 result from direct viral infection or systemic inflammation. The goals of this study were to examine the cytokine profile and the presence of SARS-CoV-2 messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) in cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) from two patients with cerebrovascular disease and COVID-19. Although the SARS-CoV-2 mRNA was not detected in CSF of both patients, we found abnormally high levels of numerous proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines, especially IL-8 and MCP-1.

Brachial plexus injury is a lesion that results in loss of function of the arm, and there are multiple ways of surgically approaching its treatment. Controlled trials that compare all surgical repair strategies and their clinical outcomes have not been performed. A systematic review was conducted to identify all articles that reported clinical outcomes in different surgeries (nerve transfer, nerve graft, neurolysis, end-to-end, multiple interventions, and others).
