Background: The incidence of postoperative spinal infection (PSI) ranges from 0% to 10%, with devastating effects on the patient prognosis because of higher morbidity while increasing costs to the health care system. PSIs are elusive and difficult to diagnose, especially in the early postoperative state, because of confusing clinical symptoms, rise in serum biomarkers, or imaging studies. Current research on diagnosis has focused on serum biomarkers; nevertheless, most series rely on retrospective cohorts where biomarkers are studied individually and at different time points.

Evolution and Revolution of Imaging Technologies in Neurosurgery.

Neurol Med Chir (Tokyo)

December 2022

Department of Neurosurgery, Brain Tumor Immunotherapy Program, McKnight Brain Institute, University of Florida.

We understand only a small fraction of the events happening in our brains; therefore, despite all the progress made thus far, a whole array of questions remains. Nonetheless, neurosurgeons invented new tools to circumvent the challenges that had plagued their predecessors. With the manufacturing boom of the 20th century, technological innovations blossomed enabling the neuroscientific community to study and operate upon the living brain in finer detail and with greater precision while avoiding harm to the nervous system.

The differential contribution of monocyte subsets expressing the C-C chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2) to subclinical atherosclerosis in girls and boys is unclear. In this pilot study, we compared classical, intermediate, and nonclassical monocyte subsets expressing CCR2 in 33 obese children of both sexes aged 8 to 16 divided by carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), considering values above the 75th percentile (p75) as abnormally high IMT. Obesity was defined as body mass index above the 95th percentile according to age and sex.

Transsynaptic transport is the most accepted proposal to explain the SARS-CoV-2 infection of the CNS. Nevertheless, emerging evidence shows that neurons do not express the SARS-CoV-2 receptor ACE2, which highlights the importance of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in preventing virus entry to the brain. In this study, we examine the presence of SARS-CoV-2 messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) and the cytokine profile in cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) from two patients with a brain tumor and COVID-19.

The contribution of the cellular immune response to the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still uncertain because most evidence comes from patients receiving multiple drugs able to change immune function. Herein, we conducted a prospective cohort study and obtained blood samples from 128 unvaccinated healthy volunteers to examine the response pattern of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells and monocyte subsets to polyclonal stimuli, including anti-CD3, anti-CD28, poly I:C, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) recombinant spike S1 protein, and lipopolysaccharide. Then, we started a six-month follow-up and registered 12 participants who got SARS-CoV-2 infection, from whom we retrospectively analyzed the basal immune response pattern of T cells and monocytes.

December 2022

Division of Nephrology, Instituto Nacional de Cardiología Ignacio Chávez, Juan Badiano No. 1, Col. Sección XVI, Delegación Tlalpan, 14080, Mexico City, Mexico.

Kidney disease in diabetes mellitus is usually explained by diabetic kidney disease, but other superimposed etiologies occur frequently. The distinction between diabetic kidney disease and non-diabetic kidney disease can only be made by performing kidney biopsy. Our objective was to evaluate the association of diabetic kidney disease, non-diabetic kidney disease, or both with renal replacement therapy initiation.

Objective: Prelemniscal radiation (Raprl) lesions and deep brain stimulation effectively control motor symptoms of Parkinson disease, but individual variations in the stereotactic location of its fiber components constitute a significant concern. The objective of this study was to determine individual variations in the stereotactic location of fiber tracts composing Raprl.

Methods: Raprl fiber composition was determined in a group of 10 Parkinson patients and 10 matched controls using 3T magnetic resonance imaging, brain imaging processed for diffusion-weighted images, tract density imaging, and constrained spherical deconvolution.

Health care workers (HCW) are at high risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in HCW has been examined in cross-sectional studies by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) tests, which may lead to underestimating exact incidence rates. We thus investigated the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a group of HCW at a dedicated coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) hospital in a six-month follow-up period.
