The vertebral column defines a vertebrate and shapes the spinal canal, a cavity that encloses and safeguards the spinal cord. Proper development and function of the mammalian central nervous system rely significantly on the activity of resident macrophages known as microglia. Microglia display heterogeneity and multifunctionality, enabling distinct gene expression and behavior within the spinal cord and brain.

This study aims to analyze the physical-mechanical properties and dynamic models of tissue-simulating hydrogels, specifically the photoacoustic (PA) response signals, by varying the concentrations of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and molecular weight (MW). A state-space model (SSM) is proposed to study the PVA hydrogels to retrieve the PA-related signal's damping ratio and natural frequency. Nine box-shaped PVA hydrogels containing saline solution were used, with five concentrations of PVA (7, 9, 12, 15, 20%) for MW1 and four for MW2.

They are usually asymptomatic; however, in the presence of symptoms, significant growth, or complications, open surgical resection is indicated. We present the case of a 46-year-old woman with obesity and diabetes who experienced five years of left hemiabdominal pain, which was unsuccessfully treated symptomatically.

We present the case of a 39-year-old male presented with continuous fever, abdominal pain, and peritoneal irritation. A contrast-enhanced thoracoabdominopelvic computed tomography revealed free air and fluid, suggestive of intestinal perforation.

Introduction: Venous air embolism (VAE) consists of air entering vascular structures due to a pressure gradient generated during medical-surgical procedures. Most cases of VAE are iatrogenic.
Case Reports: Three hospitalised patients aged 23 to 86 years underwent venous air embolism (VAE) in the right heart system after performing CTPA.

A significant proportion of high-flow arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in the hand are complex to treat due to their multicentricity, size, and risk of jeopardizing distal circulation. Therefore, AVMs are frequently considered "inoperable." We present the case of a multifocal recurrent AVM treated in conjunction with the interventional radiology department, with intra-arterial embolization and excision followed by immediate distal revascularization to replace the resulting arterial deficit.

Introduction: In patients with chronic kidney disease stages 4 and 5 (CKD stages 4-5) without dialysis and arterial hypertension, it is unknown if the values of systolic blood pressure (SBP) considered in control (<120 mm Hg) are associated with kidney replacement therapy (KRT) and mortality.
Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, hypertensive CKD stages 4-5 patients attending the Renal Health Clinic at the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara were enrolled. We divided them into those that achieved SBP <120 mm Hg (controlled group) and those who did not (>120 mm Hg), the uncontrolled group.

Introduction: A proportion of monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twin pregnancies complicated by twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) can present after 26 weeks of gestation. The aim of this study was to compare perinatal outcomes of late TTTS treated by fetoscopic laser coagulation versus traditional management with amniodrainage and/or emergency preterm cesarean delivery (CD).
Methods: Retrospective cohort from January 2012 to January 2023 of consecutive MCDA twin pregnancies complicated by TTTS after 26 weeks and evaluated in our referring centers.

Nonthrombotic pulmonary embolism (NTPE) challenges the medical community with its diverse etiologies and potential life-threatening implications. The classification section delves into the multifaceted nature of NTPE, which includes various embolic agents that traverse the vascular system. From air and fat emboli to tumor and amniotic fluid emboli, this exploration of diverse etiologies sheds light on the complexity of NTPE.

Neuroinflammation is critical in developing and progressing neurological diseases. The underlying pro-inflammatory cytokine expression combined with additional mechanisms in the neuropathology, such as oxidative stress, brain-blood barrier damage, and endothelial dysfunction, could contribute to the susceptibility to developing severe COVID-19. The physiopathology of SARS-CoV-2 and other human coronaviruses (H-CoVs) has not been completely understood; however, they have all been linked to a disproportionated response of the immune system, particularly an exacerbated cytokine production and the dysregulation of total cell counts.

Fetal programming occurs during the gestational age when exposure to environmental stimuli can cause long-term changes in the fetus, predisposing it to develop chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCD) in adulthood. Herein, we summarized the role of low-calorie or high-fat diets during pregnancy as fetal programming agents that induce intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), amplified lipogenesis, and increased amino acid transport to the placenta, which favor the CNCD onset in the offspring. We also outlined how maternal obesity and gestational diabetes act as fetal programming stimuli by reducing iron absorption and oxygen transport to the fetus, stimulating inflammatory pathways that boost neurological disorders and CNCD in the progeny.

Collapsing Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) has been reported relatively frequently in African American (AA) patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and it is associated almost always with Apolipoprotein L gen 1 (APOL1) high-risk variants. We reviewed the published literature from April 2020 to November 2022 searching for non-African American (non-AA) patients with FSGS associated with COVID-19 (eight White patients, six Hispanic patients, three Asian patients, one Indian patient, and one Asian Indian patient). The following histologic patterns were found: collapsing (n=11), not otherwise specified (n=5), tip (n=2), and perihilar (n=1).

Background: Pituitary adenomas are benign tumors located in the anterior hypophysis. Its appearance is associated with the development of parameters related to metabolic syndrome; therefore, surgical treatment could reduce associated morbimortality.
Methods: Pre- and post-surgical MRI, using the Hardy-Wilson and Knosp classification, and clinical data according to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE) criteria for metabolic syndrome: all the patients were followed-up until 208.

genotype T4 is a clinically significant free-living amoeba that causes granulomatous amoebic encephalitis and amoebic keratitis in human beings. During the initial stages of infection, trophozoites interact with various host immune responses, such as lactoferrin (Lf), in the corneal epithelium, nasal mucosa, and blood. Lf plays an important role in the elimination of pathogenic microorganisms, and evasion of the innate immune response is crucial in the colonization process.

Robust data in animals show that sucralose intake during gestation can predispose the offspring to weight gain, metabolic disturbances, and low-grade systemic inflammation; however, concluding information remains elusive in humans. In this cross-sectional, prospective study, we examined the birth weight, glucose and insulin cord blood levels, monocyte subsets, and inflammatory cytokine profile in 292 neonates at term from mothers with light sucralose ingestion (LSI) of less than 60 mg sucralose/week or heavy sucralose intake (HSI) of more than 36 mg sucralose/day during pregnancy. Mothers in the LSI ( = 205) or HSI ( = 87) groups showed no differences in age, pregestational body mass index, blood pressure, and glucose tolerance.

Background: There are no articles that aim to evaluate the specific role of surgical decompression on the recovery of pain and positive sensory symptoms (PSS) in patients with brachial plexus neuropathy (BPN), as well as the relationship between pain and frequency of sensory manifestations.
Methods: A prospective before and after study was performed, considering the pain intensity through the visual analogue scale (VAS), and the frequency of PSS through a proposed new scale: Sensory Frequency of Symptoms Scale (SFSS). To compare the patients before and after the intervention, a paired -test, a Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Cohen's D test were made, coupled with a Spearman analysis in order to establish the relationship between pain and PSS.
