Liver transplantation in Latin America: reality and challenges.

Healthcare systems in Latin America are broadly heterogeneous, but all of them are burdened by a dramatic rise in liver disease. Some challenges that these countries face include an increase in patients requiring a transplant, insufficient rates of organ donation, delayed referral, and inequitable or suboptimal access to liver transplant programs and post-transplant care. This could be improved by expanding the donor pool through the implementation of education programs for citizens and referring physicians, as well as the inclusion of extended criteria donors, living donors and split liver transplantation.

Dermatoscopic Patterns in Vitiligo.

Vitiligo is a chronic, acquired autoimmune pigmentary skin disease, most times it can be diagnosed clinically. Dermoscopy can confirm vitiligo in a non-invasive way. It is a diagnostic technique that visualizes sub-macroscopic morphological structures which correspond with specific histological structures.

Supervised Machine Learning Methods for Seasonal Influenza Diagnosis.

Influenza has been a stationary disease in Mexico since 2009, and this causes a high cost for the national public health system, including its detection using RT-qPCR tests, treatments, and absenteeism in the workplace. Despite influenza's relevance, the main clinical features to detect the disease defined by international institutions like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) do not follow the same pattern in all populations. The aim of this work is to find a machine learning method to facilitate decision making in the clinical differentiation between positive and negative influenza patients, based on their symptoms and demographic features.

A scoping review and critical evaluation of the methodological quality of clinical practice guidelines on nutrition in the preconception.

Introduction: Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) contain recommendations for specific clinical circumstances, including maternal malnutrition. This study aimed to identify the CPGs that provide recommendations for preventing, diagnosing, and treating women's malnutrition. Additionally, we sought to assess the methodological quality using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE II) instrument.

Review Article White Piedra: Review of 131 cases.

This study analyzes the clinical characteristics of patients diagnosed with White Piedra through a systematic review of cases in the literature. A sample of 131 subjects was considered, of which 91.6% were female and most were 18 years of age or younger.

Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor in the Adrenal Gland: A Case Report.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) were first described by Harold Brunn in 1939. IMTs are mainly found in the lungs and other sites of the body; hence, its occurrence in the adrenal gland is exceptional. In the literature, less than 10 cases of IMTs in the adrenal gland have been reported.

Myxoid Endometriosis: An Entity That Can Cause Confusion with Malignant Entities.

Myxoid endometriosis, a rare entity, is part of the histological changes that can occur in endometriosis. Pathologists must know the histological guidelines for the morphological recognition of this entity, as well as the histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques that support diagnosis, and define the morphological characteristics of myxoid endometriosis. In the present work, we propose diagnostic guidelines and primary differential diagnoses using special histochemical techniques and immunohistochemical reactions to recognize this entity.

Autoantibody Diversity Is Augmented in Women with Breast Cancer and Is Related to the Stage of the Disease.

Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequent malignant neoplasia and leading cause of cancer mortality for women. A timely diagnosis of BC is crucial to ensure the best chances of survival. Among the various screening tools for BC, antibodies directed towards self-antigens or tumor-associated antigens (autoantibodies) have emerged as an alternative to image-based screening modalities.

Dynamic modeling of photoacoustic sensor data to classify human blood samples.

The photoacoustic effect is an attractive tool for diagnosis in several biomedical applications. Analyzing photoacoustic signals, however, is challenging to provide qualitative results in an automated way. In this work, we introduce a dynamic modeling scheme of photoacoustic sensor data to classify blood samples according to their physiological status.

Articular involvement in Henoch-Schönlein Purpura: A review of literature.

Background: Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP), the most typical kind of pediatric vasculitis, can also affect adults. Over the last 10 years, research has been increasing on improvements in HSP diagnosis, physiopathology, symptoms, and therapy. Joint involvement is highly frequent in this condition; however, it typically undergoes spontaneous resolution and does not lead to long-term complications.

Complications of Right Heart Catheterization in Patients ≥70 Years of Age With Suspected Pulmonary Hypertension: Experience From a Tertiary Care Center.

Right heart catheterization (RHC) represents the gold standard diagnostic approach for pulmonary hypertension (PH). Historically, the complication rates of RHC are known to be low. The study aimed to evaluate the indications for performing RHC and the occurrence of adverse events related to the procedure in patients > over 70 years of age in a Mexican Tertiary Care Center.

Dermatologic Review in Pediatric Vascular Lesions.

Vascular anomalies (VAs) can be present in any organ; however, the skin being the largest one, it is there where many of them are evident; some are visible at birth, others develop throughout life. Pediatric dermatologists are specially trained to distinguish VAs from their mimickers, which require different treatments and may harbor distinct prognoses. We resume the diagnostic and therapeutic tasks of pediatric dermatologist at our vascular anomaly clinics, as well as the differential diagnoses of mimickers of VAs.

Barriers in the Management of Obesity in Mexican Children and Adolescents through the COVID-19 Lockdown-Lessons Learned and Perspectives for the Future.

Unlabelled: The COVID-19 lockdown caused health system issues, including the need for long-term care for patients with conditions like childhood obesity. We wanted to know how the lockdown had changed our patients' health and which variables had greater influence in preventing and managing overweight and obesity in kids and teens during and after the lockdown.

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) refers to the use of ultrasound imaging through pocket-sized sonographic devices at the patient's bedside, to make a diagnosis or direct a procedure and immediately answer a clinical question. Its goal is to broaden the physical examination, not to replace conventional ultrasound studies. POCUS has evolved as a complement to physical examination and has been adopted by different medical specialties, including hepatology.

The vertebral column defines a vertebrate and shapes the spinal canal, a cavity that encloses and safeguards the spinal cord. Proper development and function of the mammalian central nervous system rely significantly on the activity of resident macrophages known as microglia. Microglia display heterogeneity and multifunctionality, enabling distinct gene expression and behavior within the spinal cord and brain.

In silico identification of a biarylamine acting as agonist at human β adrenoceptors and exerting BRL37344-like effects on mouse metabolism.

Human β-adrenoceptor (βAR) agonists were considered potential agents for the treatment of metabolic disorders. However, compounds tested as βAR ligands have shown marked differences in pharmacological profile in rodent and human species, although these compounds remain attractive as they were successfully repurposed for the therapy of urinary incontinence. In this work, some biarylamine compounds were designed and tested in silico as potential βAR agonists on 3-D models of mouse or human βARs.
