Despite the continuous developments and advancements in the treatment of gastric cancer (GC), which is one of the most prevalent types of cancer in China, the overall survival is still poor for most patients with advanced GC. In recent years, with the progress in tumor immunology research, attention has shifted toward immunotherapy as a therapeutic approach for GC. Programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibitors, as novel immunosuppressive medications, have been widely utilized in the treatment of GC.

Institute of Geriatrics, Beijing Key Laboratory of Aging and Geriatrics, National Clinical Research Center for Geriatrics Diseases, Second Medical Center, Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital, Beijing, China; State Key Laboratory of Kidney Diseases, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined how sleep duration and quality impact overall mortality among centenarians in Hainan, China, using data from a specific cohort study.
  • A total of 994 centenarians were analyzed, revealing that while most slept around 8 hours at night, those who took more than 2 hours of daytime sleep had a significantly increased risk of death, particularly among males.
  • The findings suggest that excessive sleep duration correlates with higher mortality risk, with a notable threshold at 9 hours, and highlight important sleep patterns in the aging population that may inform future health strategies.

Endovascular management of acute stroke.

Lancet

September 2024

Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH, USA.

Stroke related to large vessel occlusion is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide. Advances in endovascular therapy to reopen occluded arteries have been shown to reduce patient disability and mortality. Expanded indications to treat patients with large vessel occlusion in the late window (>6 h from symptom onset), with basilar artery occlusion, and with large ischaemic core at presentation have enabled treatment of more patients with simplified imaging methods.

The Role of the Gut Microbiota in Complications among Hemodialysis Patients.

Microorganisms

September 2024

Department of Nephrology, First Medical Center of Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital, Nephrology Institute of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, National Key Laboratory of Kidney Diseases, National Clinical Research Center for Kidney Diseases, Beijing Key Laboratory of Kidney Disease Research, Beijing 100853, China.

The composition of the gut microbiota varies among end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on the basis of their mode of renal replacement therapy (RRT), with notably more pronounced dysbiosis occurring in those undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Interventions such as dialysis catheters, unstable hemodynamics, strict dietary restrictions, and pharmacotherapy significantly alter the intestinal microenvironment, thus disrupting the gut microbiota composition in HD patients. The gut microbiota may influence HD-related complications, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), infections, anemia, and malnutrition, through mechanisms such as bacterial translocation, immune regulation, and the production of gut microbial metabolites, thereby affecting both the quality of life and the prognosis of patients.

  • A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of penicillin prophylaxis on the growth (height and weight) of infants born to mothers with syphilis, aiming to support efforts to prevent mother-to-child transmission of the disease.
  • 419 infants were monitored from 2015 to 2020, comparing those born to syphilis-infected mothers with those born to syphilis-free mothers up to 18 months of age.
  • Results indicated that syphilis-exposed infants generally grew similarly to their unexposed peers, and treatment variations showed some differing growth trends, suggesting effective public health strategies can mitigate risks of congenital syphilis.

In the field of ophthalmology, orbital fat prolapse under the upper eyelid is less recognized than subconjunctival orbital fat prolapse. Despite its occasional occurrence in clinical practice, this condition is often inadequately understood and incorrectly classified due to its subtle manifestations and the limited number of focused studies. Typically affecting young patients, the prolapse is located subcutaneously in the mid-upper eyelid, resulting in a pseudo-occlusion.
