Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to explore how lipopolysaccharide (LPS) affects the formation of osteoclasts and their ability to resorb bone, using bone marrow-derived macrophages extracted from mice.
  • - Researchers used flow cytometry and cell activity tests to analyze BMMs with various LPS concentrations, observing the role of LPS in osteoclastogenesis through specific culture groups and staining techniques.
  • - Results showed that 100 ng/mL LPS promoted BMM proliferation; however, M-CSF alone did not allow for osteoclast formation, while the combination of M-CSF and RANKL did, indicating LPS's potential influence on bone resorption dynamics.

To promote the technical training and scientific popularization of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in China, the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Specialized Committee of Chinese Research Hospital Association combined with the Science Popularization Branch of the Chinese Medical Association wrote "2018 National consensus on cardiopulmonary resuscitation training in China". The formation was based on the general outline about "2016 National consensus on cardiopulmonary resuscitation in China", and to implement the important strategies included the "three pre" policy, prevention, precognition, and pre-warning, before the cardiac arrest (CA); the "three modernization" methods, standardized, diversified and individualized, during the CA; and the "three life" strategies, the rebirth, the extra and the extended, after the CA; and also combined with the concrete National conditions and clinical practice of China area. The document summarized the evidence of published science about CPR training till now, and recommend the establishment of "the CPR Training Triangle" according to the Chinese National conditions.

Heat stroke, the most serious type of heat illness, refers to the presence of hyperthermia (core temperature >40°C), accompanied by central nervous system dysfunction. The hippocampus is a particularly vulnerable region in the early stage of heat stroke. Increasing evidence suggests that dysregulation of brain iron metabolism is involved in many neurodegenerative diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) in diagnosing pancreaticobiliary strictures, aiming to improve accuracy beyond current tissue sampling methods, which have low sensitivity.
  • The analysis included 12 studies with a total of 591 patients, finding that CLE had a sensitivity of 87% and specificity of 76%, while tissue sampling had a sensitivity of 64% and a high specificity of 94%.
  • Combining CLE with tissue sampling increased the sensitivity to 93% and maintained a specificity of 82%, suggesting that this combination is more effective for diagnosing malignant strictures.

Autologous chyle fat grafting for the treatment of hypertrophic scars and scar-related conditions.

Stem Cell Res Ther

March 2018

Department of Burn and Plastic Surgery, the First Affiliated Hospital of Chinese PLA General Hospital, No. 51 Fucheng Road, Haidian District, Beijing, 100038, China.

Background: Scarring is the product of natural restoration, yet its treatment remains challenging. Both collagen and fibroblasts are abnormally abundant in scars, leading to scar hyperplasia or contracture. Several clinical studies have reported that wrinkles at the recipient site are reduced, pores are narrowed, pigmentation is decreased, and skin is softened after autologous fat transplantation.

Expert consensus on the evaluation and diagnosis of combat injuries of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

Mil Med Res

February 2018

State Key Laboratory of Trauma, Burn and Combined Injury, Department of Trauma Surgery, Daping Hospital, Army Medical University, Chongqing, China.

The accurate assessment and diagnosis of combat injuries are the basis for triage and treatment of combat casualties. A consensus on the assessment and diagnosis of combat injuries was made and discussed at the second annual meeting of the Professional Committee on Disaster Medicine of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA). In this consensus agreement, the massive hemorrhage, airway, respiration, circulation and hypothermia (MARCH) algorithm, which is a simple triage and rapid treatment and field triage score, was recommended to assess combat casualties during the first-aid stage, whereas the abbreviated scoring method for combat casualty and the MARCH algorithm were recommended to assess combat casualties in level II facilities.

A Randomized Trial Comparing the NeoVas Sirolimus-Eluting Bioresorbable Scaffold and Metallic Everolimus-Eluting Stents.

JACC Cardiovasc Interv

February 2018

Center for Interventional Vascular Therapy, Division of Cardiology, Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University, New York, New York; Cardiovascular Research Foundation, New York, New York.

Objectives: The authors sought to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the NeoVas bioresorbable scaffold (BRS) compared with metallic drug-eluting stents.

Background: BRS have the potential to improve very late outcomes compared with metallic drug-eluting stents, but some BRS have been associated with increased rates of device thrombosis before complete bioresorption. NeoVas is a new poly-l-lactic acid BRS that elutes sirolimus from a poly-D, l-lactide coating.

The origins and homeostasis of monocytes and tissue-resident macrophages in physiological situation.

J Cell Physiol

October 2018

State Key Laboratory of Membrane Biology, Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China.

Monocytes and macrophages are critical effectors and regulators of innate immune response. They not only play crucial and distinctive roles in homeostasis, but also contribute to some pathologic processes. The heterogeneity of the macrophage lineage has been widely recognized and, in part, is a result of the specialization of resident macrophages in particular tissue microenvironments.

The present study investigated the influence of cigarette smoke extract (CSE) and nicotine on the expression of thrombomodulin (TM) and endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR) in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Smoking is associated with intravascular thrombosis. As a vital anticoagulation cofactor, TM is located on the endothelial cell surface and regulates intravascular coagulation by binding to thrombin, hence activating protein C.

Oral dryness is a common feature in menopausal women. Estrogen therapy can relieve this symptom; however, the underlying mechanism was not clear. Standardized isopropanolic black cohosh (Actaea racemosa; Remifemin) can also relieve menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes and sweating.

Pregnant women and animals have increased susceptibility to a variety of intracellular pathogens including Listeria monocytogenes (LM), which has been associated with significantly increased level of sex hormones such as progesterone. CD8 T memory(Tm) cell-mediated antigen-non-specific IFN-γ responses are critically required in the host defense against LM. However, whether and how increased progesterone during pregnancy modulates CD8 Tm cell-mediated antigen-non-specific IFN-γ production and immune protection against LM remain poorly understood.
