Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effects of mitochondrial transplantation (MT) after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on microglia/macrophages (MG/MΦ) and neurological function in rats.
  • - The results indicated that the group receiving mitochondrial transplants (Mito) showed improved mitochondrial structure in MG/MΦ, reduced neuroinflammation, less neuronal apoptosis, and better neurological scores compared to other groups.
  • - The findings suggest that exogenous MT may enhance brain protection following CPR by facilitating the polarization of MG/MΦ towards a beneficial M2-type, indicating potential for therapeutic strategies in post-resuscitation care.

Neuroinflammation is a central player in postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD), an intractable and highly confounding neurological complication with finite therapeutic options. Celastrol, a quinone methide triterpenoid, is a bioactive ingredient extracted from Tripterygium wilfordii with talented anti-inflammatory capacity. However, it is unclear whether celastrol can prevent anesthesia/surgery-evoked cognitive deficits in an inflammation-specific manner.

Deep learning-based 3D/2D surgical navigation registration techniques achieved excellent results. However, these methods are limited by the occlusion of surgical equipment resulting in poor accuracy. We designed a contrastive learning method that treats occluded and unoccluded X-rays as positive samples, maximizing the similarity between the positive samples and reducing interference from occlusion.

Objectives: Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is a prevalent musculoskeletal disorder with substantial implications for disability and healthcare expenditures. The role of serum vitamin D (25-Hydroxyvitamin D, 25(OH)D) levels in the pathogenesis of various musculoskeletal conditions has been explored in prior observational studies, suggesting a potential association. While previous observational studies have suggested an association between the two conditions, it might confound the effect of 25(OH)D on IDD.

The mechanism linking psoriasis to metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains poorly understood. Recent reports indicate upregulation of glycolysis-related proteins in psoriatic keratinocytes (KCs). However, the role of glucose metabolism reprogramming in psoriatic KCs, psoriasis, and psoriasis with MetS remains unclear.

Tracking cognitive trajectories in older survivors of COVID-19 up to 2.5 years post-infection.

Nat Aging

September 2024

Department of Neurology and Center for Clinical Neuroscience, Daping Hospital, Third Military Medical University, Chongqing, China.

Emerging evidence suggests that neurological and other post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 can persist beyond or develop following SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, the long-term trajectories of cognitive change after a COVID-19 infection remain unclear. Here we investigated cognitive changes over a period of 2.

Background: Infant hepatitis syndrome (IHS) is a clinical syndrome in infants less than one year of age with generalized skin jaundice, abnormal liver function, and hepatomegaly due to various etiologies such as infection.

Aim: To investigate the effect of IHS patients, after treatment with arsphenamine-based peptides, on patients' liver function damage and immune function.

Methods: Of 110 patients with IHS treated in our hospital from January 2019 to January 2021 were grouped according to the randomized residual grouping method, with 5 cases in each group shed due to transfer, Ultimately, 50 cases remained in each group.

Calcitriol ameliorates the progression of hepatic fibrosis through autophagy-related gene 16-like 1-mediated autophagy.

Am J Med Sci

June 2024

Department of Infectious Diseases, General Hospital of Central Theater Command of PLA, Wuhan 430070, China; Southern Medical University, Guangzhou 510515, China.

Background: Calcitriol has the potential to counteract fibrotic diseases beyond its classical action of maintaining calcium and bone metabolism; however, its functional mechanism remains unknown. Autophagy-related gene 16-like 1 (Atg16l1) is one of the genes related to autophagy and is involved in protecting against fibrotic diseases. The present study aimed to explore the contribution of autophagy to the inhibition of calcitriol-induced hepatic fibrosis, as well as its potential molecular mechanism.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study using a rat model showed that reducing lactic acid levels helped slow down IVDD progression, while in vitro experiments confirmed that high lactic acid concentrations caused cellular aging and stress in nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs).
  • * The mechanisms behind these effects involve the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, where lactic acid binds to specific residues in the Akt protein, altering its activity and potentially offering a new therapeutic approach for treating IVDD.

ERK1-mediated immunomodulation of mesenchymal stem cells ameliorates inflammatory disorders.

State Key Laboratory of Oral & Maxillofacial Reconstruction and Regeneration & National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases & Shaanxi International Joint Research Center for Oral Diseases, Center for Tissue Engineering, School of Stomatology, the Fourth Military Medical University, Xi'an, Shaanxi 710032, China.

Immune system disorders, especially T cell disorders, are important therapeutic targets of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in many autoimmune diseases (ADs). Although extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERKs) play a role in MSC therapy by promoting T cell apoptosis, the mechanism remains unclear. Our findings indicate that bone marrow MSCs (BMMSCs), but not BMMSCs, failed to promote T cell apoptosis due to incapacity to activate the ETS2/AURKA/NF-κB/Fas/MCP-1 cascade.
