Background: To compare the morbidity and work absenteeism associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and influenza among health care personnel (HCP) in 2022 to 2023.

Methods: We followed 5,752 hospital-based HCP in Greece from November 14, 2022 through May 28, 2023. Symptomatic HCP was tested for SARS-CoV-2 and influenza by real-time polymerase chain reaction and/or rapid antigen detection test.

Marfan Syndrome Associated With Acute Myocardial Infarction in the First Trimester of Pregnancy.

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a rare hereditary connective tissue disorder with autosomal dominant inheritance associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular complications due to connective tissue fragility. Acute myocardial infarction during pregnancy is also a rare event associated with poor maternal and fetal outcomes. Herein, we report a case of a 30-year-old pregnant woman with a known history of MFS.

Outcome measures analysis following total knee arthroplasty in patients with severe haemophilic arthropathy of the knee.

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has been the gold standard for treating severe haemophilic arthropathy of the knee when all conservative measures fail. However, performing a TKA in patients with haemophilic arthropathy is difficult due to severe joint deformity and destruction, and poor bone quality. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the short-term results of TKA in the treatment of knee haemophilic arthropathy in a tertiary referral centre, with an emphasis on health-related quality of life and knee function.

Background: Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is a mitokine, the role of which, total or H-specific, in modulating energy metabolism and homeostasis in obesity-related diseases, such as metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), has not been fully elucidated in adult humans. We aimed to investigate the fasting and stimulated levels of GDF15, total and H-specific, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and C-peptide, in two physiology interventional studies: one focusing on obesity, and the other on MASLD.

Methods: Study 1 investigated individuals with normal weight or with obesity, undergoing a 3-h mixed meal test (MMT); and study 2, examined adults with MASLD and controls undergoing a 120-min oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).

Materials And Methods: This was a prospective, non-randomized clinical trial with a two-arm, parallel design. A total of 42 individuals with overweight or obesity without type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus were enrolled.

Enhancing Wound Healing in Chronic Diabetic Foot Ulcers: A Case Report of Topical Oxygen Therapy with Granulox®.

Chronic diabetic foot ulcers pose significant challenges in wound management, often necessitating innovative therapeutic approaches to promote healing. This case report highlights the efficacy of Granulox®, a topical hemoglobin spray designed to enhance oxygen supply to chronic wounds, in conjunction with standard care. An 84-year-old male with a longstanding diabetic foot ulcer demonstrated remarkable improvement following the addition of Granulox® to his treatment regimen.

Galectin-3 in chronic kidney disease.

Background And Aims: High serum galectin-3 has been associated with adverse outcomes among dialysis patients, although its prognostic role remains unclear among individuals with earlier-stage chronic kidney disease. The present systematic review aims to evaluate the association of serum galectin-3 with survival, cardiovascular disease and kidney disease progression among non-dialysis chronic kidney disease patients.

Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CENTRAL and Google Scholar were systematically searched till November 10, 2023.

The effect of obesity pharmacotherapy on body composition, including muscle mass.

Obesity pharmacotherapy represents a promising approach to treating obesity and may provide benefits beyond weight loss alone. Maintaining or even increasing muscle mass during weight loss is important to overall health, metabolic function and weight loss maintenance. Drugs such as liraglutide, semaglutide, tirzepatide, and naltrexone/bupropion have shown significant weight loss effects, and emerging evidence suggests they may also have effects on body composition, particularly a positive influence on muscle mass.

Incidence of primary hepatitis C infection among people who inject drugs during 2012-2020 in Athens, Greece.

One of the World Health Organization's targets for the 2030 viral hepatitis elimination strategy is to reduce new hepatitis C (HCV) infections. In Athens, Greece, people who inject drugs (PWID) have a high HCV prevalence, with increasing trends since the 2000s. This analysis aims to assess primary HCV incidence among PWID during 2012-2020.

The burden of cardiovascular disease and related risk factors in Greece: the ATTICA epidemiological study (2002-2022).

Objective: The aim of this study was to present the burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its related risk factors based on a 20-year observation period (2002-2022).

Methods: In 2002, 3042 Greek adults (aged: 45 (12) years) free of CVD, cancer, or any other chronic infections were enrolled. In 2022, the 20-year follow-up was performed on 2169 participants (1988 had complete data for CVD).

Aim: We assessed the vaccination effectiveness (VE) of a COVID-19 booster vaccine dose and the association between morbidity and absenteeism with COVID-19 booster vaccine receipt among healthcare personnel (HCP) in 2022-2023 in Greece.

Methods: We followed 5752 HCP from November 14, 2022 through May 28, 2023 for episodes of absenteeism. Absenteeism for non-infectious causes, pregnancy leave, or annual leave was not recorded.

Charcot Foot: An Update on Diagnosis, Treatment, and Areas of Uncertainty.

Background And Aims: Charcot neuroosteoarthropathy (CN) is considered a rare complication of diabetic neuropathy. Due to its insidious mode of presentation, CN may be difficult to diagnose timely and a high index of suspicion is required from both, the diabetic patient (especially those with neuropathy) and their physicians for the early diagnosis and treatment to prevent major complications.

Methods: We planned a narrative review and searched MEDLINE database to identify evidence regarding CN incidence, treatment options, and recent guidelines.

Foreign Body in the Tracheobronchial Tree as a Cause of Hemoptysis in an Adult Without Risk Factors for Aspiration: A Case Report.

Although aspiration of a foreign body into the trachea and bronchi can occur in all age groups, it is more common in infants and young children. Foreign bodies in the tracheobronchial tree are uncommon in adults and mainly present in patients with dysphagia and an altered level of consciousness. The identification of foreign bodies in the tracheobronchial tree is frequently overlooked or delayed, leading patients to present later with chronic symptoms and potential complications.
