Diverticulitis in a solitary transverse colon diverticulum is uncommon, with only a handful of cases documented in the literature. There are various clinical manifestations of the disease, which make clinical and radiological diagnosis rather challenging. Herein, we present a case of a premenopausal female patient in her late 40s who presented to the emergency department, complaining of right lower quadrant abdominal pain, nausea, anorexia and fever.

Modifications of the hemoglobin (Hb) structure in regions involving the regulation of oxygen transport may lead to an increased oxygen affinity for the hemoglobin molecule and impaired oxygen delivery to the tissues. Herein, we present six patients with high-oxygen-affinity Hb variants, either in heterozygous form or in compound heterozygosity (such as heterozygosity for Hb Hiroshima, Köln, Crete, and compound heterozygosity Hb Crete with β or δβ thalassemia), in order to demonstrate the need for prompt and accurate diagnosis and enrich the limited literature due to the rarity of such cases. Hb Crete, Hb Hiroshima, and Hb Köln have distinct pathophysiologies and may result in different clinical phenotypes.

Immune checkpoints (ICs) are molecules implicated in the fine-tuning of immune response via co-inhibitory or co-stimulatory signals, and serve to secure minimized host damage. Targeting ICs with various therapeutic modalities, including checkpoint inhibitors/monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and CAR-T cells has produced remarkable results, especially in immunogenic tumors, setting a paradigm shift in cancer therapeutics through the incorporation of these IC-targeted treatments. However, the large proportion of subjects who experience primary or secondary resistance to available IC-targeted options necessitates further advancements that render immunotherapy beneficial for a larger patient pool with longer duration of response.

Background: Viscoelastic tests are used to better understand the complex picture of hemostasis in cirrhosis. Limited data exist regarding the clinical relevance of rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) in acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) or acute decompensation (AD). We examined the pattern and role of sequential observations of 9 ROTEM components in both ACLF and AD groups.

The relationship between diet, sleep duration and cardiovascular disease (CVD) has not been well understood. The aim of the present study was to test the potential modifying role of sleep duration in the association between adherence to the Mediterranean-type diet (MD) and CVD risk. The study consisted of = 313 initially free-of-CVD adults, from the ATTICA cohort study (2002-2022), with available information on sleep habits.

The study aimed to assess the image quality and diagnostic performance of low-dose Chest Computed Tomography (LDCCT) in detecting pulmonary infections in patients with hematologic malignancies. A total of 164 neutropenic patients underwent 256 consecutive CT examinations, comparing 149 LDCCT and 107 Standard-Dose Chest CT (SDCCT) between May 2015 and June 2019. LDCCT demonstrated a 47% reduction in radiation dose while maintaining acceptable image noise and quality compared to SDCCT.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents an entity of poor prognosis, especially in cases of delayed diagnosis. According to the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system, patients in BCLC-A are the most suitable for potentially curative treatments (surgery or radiofrequency ablation), whereas those in BCLC-C should be treated only with systemic treatment, as locoregional interventions are ineffective due to the tumor's extensiveness. For patients in the BCLC-B stage, trans-arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is the reference treatment, but the role of systemic treatment has been constantly increasing.

Background: Bariatric surgery has long-term beneficial effects on body weight and metabolic status, but there is an apparent lack of comprehensive cardiometabolic, renal, liver, and metabolomic/lipidomic panels, whereas the underlying mechanisms driving the observed postoperative ameliorations are still poorly investigated. We aimed to study the long-term effects of bariatric surgery on metabolic profile, cardiorenal and liver outcomes in association with underlying postoperative gut hormone adaptations.
Methods: 28 individuals who underwent bariatric surgery [17 sleeve gastrectomy (SG), 11 Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB)] were followed up 3, 6 and 12 and at 10 years following surgery.
