Tumor ablation including carotid artery resection and simultaneous reconstruction: A retrospective study.

The study purpose is to review the surgical approach and evaluate the results in cases of head and neck malignancies with internal carotid artery invasion. The anatomical site of the primary tumor varied including a fixed massive metastatic neck disease of an occult intraoral carcinoma of the right tonsil, a recurrent metastatic neck tumor after laryngectomy for glottic primary carcinoma and a metastatic malignant melanoma of an unknown primary origin. In all cases carotid artery was invaded and therefore resected.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia in CA patients, especially in those with ATTR amyloidosis.

Physical signs and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in familial hypercholesterolemia: the HELLAS-FH Registry.

Aims: Three physical signs, namely tendon xanthomas, corneal arcus and xanthelasma, have been associated with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (heFH). The prevalence and clinical significance of these signs are not well established among contemporary heFH individuals. This study explored the frequency as well as the association of these physical signs with prevalent atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in heFH individuals.

Anti-osteoporotic treatments in the era of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: friend or foe.

Over the last years non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has grown into the most common chronic liver disease globally, affecting 17-38% of the general population and 50-75% of patients with obesity and/or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). NAFLD encompasses a spectrum of chronic liver diseases, ranging from simple steatosis (non-alcoholic fatty liver, NAFL) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH; or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, MASH) to fibrosis and cirrhosis with liver failure or/and hepatocellular carcinoma. Due to its increasing prevalence and associated morbidity and mortality, the disease-related and broader socioeconomic burden of NAFLD is substantial.

Association of serum galectin-3 levels with mortality and cardiovascular disease outcomes in hemodialysis patients: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis.

Background: Galectin-3 has been proposed as a candidate marker for cardiovascular risk stratification, although its role in kidney failure is unclear. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the association of serum galectin-3 levels with overall survival and cardiovascular outcomes among hemodialysis patients.

Methods: Medline, Scopus, Web of Science and CENTRAL were systematically searched from inception till Aug 20, 2023.

Isolated nonspecific terminal ileitis: prevalence, clinical evolution and correlation with metachronous diagnosis of Crohn's disease: a retrospective study and review of the literature.

Background: The existing literature does not provide adequate guidance on the diagnosis and management of patients with nonspecific terminal ileitis, while data regarding the percentage of patients who ultimately develop Crohn's disease (CD) are scarce. We evaluated the prevalence and natural course of nonspecific terminal ileitis in patients who underwent colonoscopy during a 11-year period.

Methods: All patients with endoscopic findings of terminal ileitis and nonspecific histological findings were included.

Rationale for the Inclusion of β-Blockers Among Major Antihypertensive Drugs in the 2023 European Society of Hypertension Guidelines.

We address the reasons why, unlike other guidelines, in the 2023 guidelines of the European Society of Hypertension β-blockers (BBs) have been regarded as major drugs for the treatment of hypertension, at the same level as diuretics, calcium channel blockers, and blockers of the renin-angiotensin system. We argue that BBs, (1) reduce blood pressure (the main factor responsible for treatment-related protection) not less than other drugs, (2) reduce pooled cardiovascular outcomes and mortality in placebo-controlled trials, in which there has also been a sizeable reduction of all major cause-specific cardiovascular outcomes, (3) have been associated with a lower global cardiovascular protection in 2 but not in several other comparison trials, in which the protective effect of BBs versus the other major drugs has been similar or even greater, with a slightly smaller or no difference of global benefit in large trial meta-analyses and a similar protective effect when comparisons extend to BBs in combination versus other drug combinations. We mention the large number of cardiac and other comorbidities for which BBs are elective drugs, and we express criticism against the exclusion of BBs because of their lower protective effect against stroke in comparison trials, because, for still uncertain reasons, differences in protection against cause-specific events (stroke, heart failure, and coronary disease) have been reported for other major drugs.

Role of microRNAs in cognitive decline related to COVID‑19 (Review).

The likelihood and severity of cognitive decline related to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been shown to be reflected by the severity of the infection and concomitant alterations in specific biomarkers. The present review discusses the role of microRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) as biomarkers in COVID-19 and the potential molecular mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction related to COVID-19. A systematic search of published articles was carried out from January 31, 2000 to December 31, 2022 using the PubMed, ProQuest, Science Direct and Google Scholar databases, combining the following terms: 'COVID-19' OR 'SARS-CoV-2' OR 'post-COVID-19 effects' OR 'cognitive decline' OR 'neurodegeneration' OR 'microRNAs'.

Background: Limited data exist on the prevalence of myosteatosis (i.e., excess accumulation of fat in skeletal muscles) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients, and no systematic review or meta-analysis has been conducted in this context.

Associations of Dietary Factors with Cutaneous Melanoma: A Case-Control Study in Greece with Literature Review.

Introduction: It has been postulated that nutrition may influence the risk for cutaneous melanoma (CM); therefore, we aimed to assess the associations of food groups and individual nutrient intakes with CM in a Greek population.

Methods: In this case-control study, 151 patients with histologically confirmed CM, newly diagnosed and treated in the Oncology Department of the "Laikon" University Hospital (Athens, Greece), and 151 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals residing in the Athens metropolitan area, recruited among participants for routine health examinations, were included. All participants completed a questionnaire comprising anthropometric measurements, sociodemographic, lifestyle, and health-related variables.

Evolving role of semaglutide in NAFLD: in combination, weekly and oral administration.

Non alcoholic fatty disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease that is managed in the liver departments. It seems that the prevalence of the disease is rising worldwide and as it has the same pathogenetic pathways with metabolic syndrome, treatments that target components of the metabolic syndrome seem promising for the therapy of NAFLD as well. In this review we discuss the evolving role of semaglutide, which is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) that has been already approved for the treatment of type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity.
