Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine sex-related differences in the long-term (20-year) incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its determinants.
Methods: In 2002, 3,042 apparently healthy Greek adults were recruited, and in 2022, the 20-year follow-up was conducted with 2,169 participants, 1,988 of whom had completed CVD assessments. Sex-specific analyses using nested Cox proportional hazards were performed, as well as classification and regression tree (CRT) analysis modeling.

As the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) continues to increase globally, researchers are keen to investigate various interventions to mitigate its impact. Among these, vitamin D supplementation has attracted significant attention due to its influence on insulin secretion from the pancreas and insulin receptors in body cells. A substantial body of evidence indicates that vitamin D supplementation can reduce low-grade inflammation, a critical factor in developing insulin resistance.

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a vital diagnostic tool in clinical practice, particularly in transcatheter interventions where it aids in both pre-operative planning and intra-operative guidance. Traditional TEE probes often require general anesthesia due to patient discomfort. However, the development of miniaturized TEE probes presents a promising alternative, enabling routine examinations and interventions with minimal sedation.

Aortic valve repair is currently the only effective treatment for calcific aortic valve stenosis (CAVS), as no pharmacological therapies exist to prevent or slow its progression. Recent promising results showed that glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) attenuates the calcification of aortic valve interstitial cells. Therefore, we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis to investigate the effect of GLP-1 receptor agonism (GLP-1Ra) on the risk of CAVS.

Patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD) have higher ischemic and bleeding risk compared with patients with normal renal function. The aim of our systematic review and meta-analysis is to compare shortened (≤3 months) dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with longer DAPT in patients with CKD undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions. We systematically screened three major databases (Medline, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Scopus) searching for randomized-controlled trials or subanalyses of them, which compared shortened (S-DAPT) to longer (L-DAPT) regimens of DAPT in patients with CKD.

Intravenous amikacin, recommended for severe or recurrent (MAC) infections and as initial treatment for lung disease, is often limited by serious adverse effects such as renal and auditory toxicities. Inhaled Amikacin Liposome Inhalation Suspension (ALIS) enhances pulmonary drug deposition while minimizing systemic adverse effects, and it has recently been introduced as an add-on therapy for refractory MAC infections or when other standard treatments are inadequate. This study aims to retrospectively describe the outcomes of Greek patients with difficult-to-treat non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease following the addition of ALIS to guideline-based therapy.

Heart failure (HF) is a growing concern due to the aging population and increasing prevalence of comorbidities. Despite advances in treatment, HF remains a significant burden, necessitating novel therapeutic approaches. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) have emerged as a promising treatment option, demonstrating benefits across the entire spectrum of HF, regardless of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).

Obesity and hypertension have become an international health issue, with detrimental consequences on patients. Obesity and hypertension share common pathophysiological mechanisms, such as overactivity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone and the sympathetic nervous systems, insulin resistance, and disruption of the leptin pathway. Approved therapies for obesity and overweight include phentermine/topiramate, orlistat, naltrexone/bupropion, the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists liraglutide and semaglutide, tirzepatide, and bariatric surgery.

Background & Aims: The effect of lipid-lowering treatment (LLT) on metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is unclear. This is relevant for patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) who are on lifelong LLT. We aimed to evaluate the effect of LLT on MASLD indices in this population.

Objective: To evaluate trends in physical activity levels and their associations with demographic characteristics, health status, and lifetime cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk.
Methods: A longitudinal analysis was conducted using data from 987 males and 1,001 females (45 ± 12 years old) participating in the ATTICA cohort study. Physical activity levels were assessed at baseline (2001-2002) and subsequent follow-ups (2006, 2012, and 2022).
