Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is usually performed beyond 10 weeks of gestation, because earlier in pregnancy, the fetal fraction is low, resulting in failure to obtain reliable results. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical performance of NIPT earlier in pregnancy using a method for cell-free DNA (cfDNA) analysis that eliminates the need for polymerase chain reaction (PCR), DNA sequencing, or microarrays (Vanadis system, PerkinElmer, Waltham, MA, USA). Cell-free DNA was extracted from the maternal plasma of 30 singleton pregnancies at 6-9 weeks of gestation (group 1) and at 11-14 weeks of gestation of the same patients (group 2).

Background: Preterm birth defined as delivery before 37 gestational weeks is a leading cause of neonatal and infant morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study is to summarize the evidence from meta-analyses of observational studies on risk factors associated with PTB, evaluate whether there are indications of biases in this literature, and identify which of the previously reported associations are supported by robust evidence.
Methods: We searched PubMed and Scopus until February 2021, in order to identify meta-analyses examining associations between risk factors and PTB.

Introduction: In Greece, patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) usually go to dialysis centers two or three times a week for three/four hours per session because the treatment for home is unavailable; therefore, caregivers should perform supportive transportation and care functions.
Purpose: This study was designed to assess the burden and quality of life in caregivers of patients undergoing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis (PD) and to record their attitude toward Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19).
Methodology: We studied caregivers of patients undergoing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virtually necessary cause of cervical cancer, and HPV genotypes are categorized either as high-risk or low-risk based on their potential to cause malignancy of the cervix. HPV-DNA detection is used widely for screening women at risk. However, its clinical significance is not proven sufficiently in pregnancy.

Preterm birth defined as delivery before 37 gestational weeks, is a leading cause of neonatal and infant morbidity and mortality. Understanding its multifactorial nature may improve prediction, prevention and the clinical management. We performed an umbrella review to summarize the evidence from meta-analyses of observational studies on risks factors associated with PTB, evaluate whether there are indications of biases in this literature and identify which of the previously reported associations are supported by robust evidence.

Cancer cells are known to have a distinct metabolic profile and to exhibit significant changes in a variety of metabolic mechanisms compared to normal cells, particularly glycolysis and glutaminolysis, in order to cover their increased energy requirements. There is mounting evidence that there is a link between glutamine metabolism and the proliferation of cancer cells, demonstrating that glutamine metabolism is a vital mechanism for all cellular processes, including the development of cancer. Detailed knowledge regarding its degree of engagement in numerous biological processes across distinct cancer types is still lacking, despite the fact that such knowledge is necessary for comprehending the differentiating characteristics of many forms of cancer.

Polycythemia vera (PV) is one of the three main classic disorders of Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), with the other two being essential thrombocythemia (ET) and primary myelofibrosis (PMF). PV may develop (15%) in women of childbearing age (15-45 years), with an anticipated rate of roughly 0.3 per 100,000 people, although maintaining a male to female ratio predominance of about 2:1 and a peak prevalence in the sixth and seventh decades of life.

Background/aim: During ovarian cancer (OC) debulking surgery, the surgeon can examine the peritoneal cavity for malignant cancer cells with peritoneal washing (PW) cytology. The goal of this study was to examine the significance of peritoneal washing as a prognostic indicator for ovarian cancer patients.
Patients And Methods: Information considering the prognostic factors of OC and their impact in PW's result was collected, compared, and combined.

This study aimed to examine the associations with epidemiological, behavioral and clinical parameters of IgG antibody responses against the spike protein of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) after immunization with two doses of the BNT162b2 vaccine in a cohort of healthcare workers (HCWs, n = 439) in Greece. We used a mixed effects model to investigate the potential associations of antibody levels one and three months after vaccination and examined by bootstrapping t-tests the putative effects of gender and age for each period. We also employed exact tests of independence in R × C contingency tables to explore associations between behavioral and gender variables with vaccinations side effects.

Stress echocardiography (SE) is a well established and valid technique, widely used for the diagnostic evaluation of patients with ischemic and nonischemic cardiac diseases. This statement of the Echocardiography Working Group of the Hellenic Society of Cardiology summarizes the consensus of the writing group regarding the applications of SE, based on the expertise of their members and on a critical review of present medical literature. The main objectives of the consensus document include a comprehensive review of SE methodology and training-which focus on the preparation, the protocols used, the analysis of the SE images, and updated, evidence-based knowledge about SE applications on ischemic and nonischemic heart diseases, such as in cardiomyopathies, heart failure, and valvular heart disease.

Background: Telephone-based neurocognitive instruments embody valuable tools in identifying cognitive impairment in research settings and lately also in clinical contexts due to the pandemic crisis. The accuracy of the Cognitive Telephone Screening Instrument (COGTEL) in detecting mild- (MiND) and major (MaND) neurocognitive disorder has not been studied yet.
Objective: Comparison of the utility of COGTEL and COGTEL+, which is enriched with orientation items, with the modified Mini-Mental State Examination (3MS) in detecting MiND and MaND due to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and assessment of the impact of COGTEL face-to-face-versus telephone administration on individual performance.

Magnesium (Mg) is the second most abundant intracellular and fourth extracellular cation found in the body and is involved in a wide range of functions in the human cell and human physiology. Its role in most of the enzyme processes (ATP-ases)-stabilisation of nucleic acids (DNA, RNA), regulation of calcium and potassium ion channels, proliferation, glucose metabolism and apoptosis-make it one of the most important cations in the cell. Three pathogenetic mechanisms are mainly implicated in the development of hypomagnesaemia: reduced food intake, decreased intestinal absorption and increased renal excretion of Mg.

Introduction: Coronary vascular dysfunction, as assessed by coronary flow reserve (CFR) in the left anterior descending coronary artery, is found in various conditions including end-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD). Currently, we investigated the associations of CFR with echocardiographic indices of systolic and diastolic cardiac function and identified independent predictors of CFR in hemodialysis patients.
Methods: End-stage CKD patients treated with hemodialysis (n = 29) without known cardiovascular disease were recruited from a Hemodialysis Unit in Northwestern Greece.

Background: The pathophysiology of atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is multifactorial. The association of vascular indices with circulating biomarkers of inflammation and insulin resistance and their role in the long-term cardiovascular prognosis in T2DM patients were currently investigated.
Patients And Methods: Patients with T2DM and poor glycemic control without known cardiovascular diseases (n=119) at baseline were enrolled and followed for about 9years.

Background: Although the relationship of elevated serum uric acid levels and cardiovascular disease has been established in a great number of studies, the causal relevance of this finding remains ambiguous. An approach to evaluate the causal relevance of biomarkers is to exploit the natural randomised allocation of allelic variation in genes affecting their level, also known as Mendelian randomisation.
Aim: The aim of this paper is to review the current literature regarding serum uric acid levels and cardiovascular and renal disease risk in Mendelian randomisation studies.
