Cadmium (Cd), a potentially toxic elements, has the potential to cause harm to the kidneys. Studies has demonstrated that autophagosome-lysosome fusion blockade and consequent autophagy inhibition is related to Cd-induced kidney injury. Studies indicate that acetylation of forkhead box protein O1 (FOXO1) as a transcriptional factor of lysosomal and autophagy genes, but its roles in Cd-exposed kidney tissues remains unclear till now.

Background: Hypoxic microenvironment is a common feature of most solid tumors including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Vasculogenic mimicry (VM) formation by tumor cells could provide blood supply to tumor cells under hypoxia. NFE2 like basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factor 2 (Nrf2), a regulator of cellular homeostasis, may promote tumor progression in the hypoxic conditions.

Background: Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a proliferative retinal vascular disease occurring in the retina of premature infants and is the main cause of childhood blindness. Nowadays anti-VEGF and retinal photocoagulation are mainstream treatments for ROP, but they develop a variety of complications. Hydrogen (H) is widely considered as a useful neuroprotective and antioxidative therapeutic method for hypoxic-ischemic disease without toxic effects.

Simulation to become a better neurosurgeon. An international prospective controlled trial: The Passion study.

Brain Spine

May 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Fondazione I.R.C.C.S. Istituto Neurologico "C. Besta", Milano, Italy.

Introduction: Surgical training traditionally adheres to the apprenticeship paradigm, potentially exposing trainees to an increased risk of complications stemming from their limited experience. To mitigate this risk, augmented and virtual reality have been considered, though their effectiveness is difficult to assess.

Research Question: The PASSION study seeks to investigate the improvement of manual dexterity following intensive training with neurosurgical simulators and to discern how surgeons' psychometric characteristics may influence their learning process and surgical performance.

Neuropathic pain (NP) is usually treated with analgesics and symptomatic therapy with poor efficacy and numerous side effects, highlighting the urgent need for effective treatment strategies. Recent studies have reported an important role for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) in regulating metabolism as well as inflammatory responses. Through pain behavioral assessment, we found that activation of PPARα prevented chronic constriction injury (CCI)-induced mechanical allodynia and thermal hyperalgesia.

[Clinical significance of IL-18 and IL-18-binding protein in bone marrow of patients with myelodysplastic syndrome].

Zhonghua Xue Ye Xue Za Zhi

March 2024

Department of Hematology, General Hospital of Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin 300052, China Tianjin Key Laboratory of Bone Marrow Failure and Malignant Hemopoietic Clone Control, Tianjin 300052, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the levels of IL-18 and IL-18-binding protein (BP) in the bone marrow of 43 patients newly diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and compares these levels to control groups with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and iron-deficiency anemia (IDA).
  • Findings reveal that levels of IL-18, IL-18 BP, and free IL-18 are significantly higher in MDS patients compared to those with IDA, with free IL-18 levels showing a negative correlation to the MDS severity score (IPSS).
  • The research suggests that IL-18 BP may reduce free IL-18 levels and impact the functionality of CD8(+) T cells, indicating that

Combining fecal 16 S rRNA sequencing and spinal cord metabolomics analysis to explain the modulatory effect of PPARα on neuropathic pain.

Brain Res Bull

June 2024

Department of Anesthesiology, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, Tianjin 300052,  China; Tianjin Research Institute of Anesthesiology, Tianjin 300052, China. Electronic address:

Background: Existing evidence suggests that the composition of the gut microbiota is associated with neuropathic pain (NP), but the mechanistic link is elusive. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) has been shown to be a pharmacological target for the treatment of metabolic disorders, and its expression is also involved in inflammatory regulation. The aim of this study was to investigate the important modulatory effects of PPARα on gut microbiota and spinal cord metabolites in mice subjected to chronic constriction injury.

Background: Clinicians traditionally aim to identify a singular explanation for the clinical presentation of a patient; however, in some cases, the diagnosis may remain elusive or fail to comprehensively explain the clinical findings. In recent years, advancements in next-generation sequencing, including whole-exome sequencing, have led to the incidental identification of dual diagnoses in patients. Herein we present the cases of five pediatric patients diagnosed with dual rare genetic diseases.

Dioscin alleviates aplastic anemia through regulatory T cells promotion.

Hematology

December 2024

Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, General Hospital of Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin, People's Republic of China.

Aplastic anemia (AA) is one of the immune-mediated bone marrow failure disorders caused by multiple factors, including the inability of CD4 + CD25 + regulatory T cells (Tregs) to negatively regulate cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs). Dioscin is a natural steroid saponin that has a similar structure to steroid hormones. The purpose of this study is to look into the effect of Dioscin on the functions of CD4 + CD25+ Tregs in the AA mouse model and explore its underlying mechanism.

Novel near-infrared BODIPY-cyclodextrin complexes for photodynamic therapy.

Heliyon

March 2024

School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Institute of Molecular Plus, Tianjin University, Tianjin, China.

To meet the requirements of diagnosis and treatment, photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising cancer treatment with less side-effect. A series of novel BODIPY complexes (BODIPY-CDs) served as PDT agents were first reported to enhance the biocompatibility and water solubility of BODIPY matrix through the click reaction of alkynyl-containing BODIPY and azide-modified cyclodextrin (CD). BODIPY-CDs possessed superior water solubility due to the introduction of CD and their fluorescence emission apparently redshifted (>90 nm) on account of triazole units as the linkers compared to alkynyl-containing BODIPY.
