Purpose: There are limited data about the outcome of old intensive care (ICU) patients suffering from Covid-19 in the post-vaccination era. This study distinguishes the pre- and post-acute illness living conditions of ICU survivors from non-survivors.
Methods: This prospective international multicenter study included 642 old (≥ 70 years) ICU patients, including data ranging from pre-illness condition to functional 90-days follow-up.

Colorectal neoplasia and diverticulosis are common findings on colonoscopies. While adenomas are precursors to colorectal cancer, diverticulosis is usually asymptomatic but can lead to diverticulitis. Despite their prevalence and coexistence, the relationship between these conditions remains unclear.

Background: Desmopressin acetate (1-deamino-8-d-arginine vasopressin-DDAVP) is a analogue of the antidiuretic hormone vasopressin. DDAVP is suggested to reduce bleeding after cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass. The aim of this study was to determine if DDAVP has any negative impact on renal function leading to acute kidney injury (AKI) and therefore increases the need for renal replacement therapy (RRT).

Background: Excessive glenoid retroversion is a known risk factor for posterior shoulder instability and failure after soft tissue stabilization procedures. Whether excessive glenoid retroversion is a risk factor for failure after posterior glenoid bone grafting is unknown.
Purpose: To evaluate the biomechanical effectiveness of posterior iliac crest bone grafting (ICBG) for posterior shoulder instability with increasing glenoid retroversion.

Aims: The optimal revascularization strategy for patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), cardiogenic shock (CS), and multivessel disease remains controversial. The CULPRIT-SHOCK trial compared culprit lesion-only vs. immediate multivessel percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), providing important data but leaving efficacy questions unresolved.

Background: The aim of this retrospective observational study was to examine the relationship between SCORE2 and the occurrence of colonic diverticula in a screening population without cardiovascular or gastrointestinal symptoms. SCORE2, recognized and supported by the European Society of Cardiology for cardiovascular risk assessment, served as the primary metric for the analysis in this investigation.
Methods: We studied 3935 asymptomatic individuals undergoing screening colonoscopy.

Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is recognized as a chronic autoimmune disorder with systemic inflammation and joint damage. Its potential role as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is increasingly noted. This review delves into the causal relationship between RA and CVD, with Mendelian randomization (MR) offering a genetic perspective.

Background: With the implementation of the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and the publication of the metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) nomenclature in 2020, it is important to establish consensus for the coding of MAFLD in ICD-11. This will inform subsequent revisions of ICD-11.
Methods: Using the Qualtrics XM and WJX platforms, questionnaires were sent online to MAFLD-ICD-11 coding collaborators, authors of papers, and relevant association members.

Introduction: Percutaneous coronary intervention is a well-established revascularization strategy for patients with coronary artery disease. The safety and feasibility of performing these procedures on a same-day discharge basis for selected patients has been studied in a large number of mostly nonrandomized trials. An up to date literature review should focus on trials with radial access, representing the current standard for coronary procedures in Austria and other European countries.

Introduction: The global burden of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, remains a significant public health challenge. The Life's Simple 7 (LS7) score was developed as a tool to evaluate cardiovascular health behaviours and habits and identify high-risk individuals. The present study aimed to assess the distribution of LS7 scores among educational strata.

Freely available datasets have become an invaluable tool to propel data-driven research, especially in the field of critical care medicine. However, the number of datasets available is limited. This leads to the repeated reuse of datasets, inherently increasing the risk of selection bias.

Objective: Education often reflects socioeconomic status. Research indicates that lower socioeconomic status may increase the risk of diverticulosis, and according to data from the USA, diverticular disease is a significant and costly health problem. Our study explores the link between educational level and colonic diverticula occurrence.

Excess free iron is a substrate for the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby augmenting oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a well-established cause of organ damage in the liver, the main site of iron storage. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent mechanism of regulated cell death, has recently been gaining attention in the development of organ damage and the progression of liver disease.

Background And Aims: Experimental studies linked dysfunctional Farnesoid X receptor (FXR)-fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19) signaling to liver disease. This study investigated key intersections of the FXR-FGF19 pathway along the gut-liver axis and their link to disease severity in patients with cirrhosis.
Methods: Patients with cirrhosis undergoing hepatic venous pressure gradient measurement (cohort-I n = 107, including n = 53 with concomitant liver biopsy; n = 5 healthy controls) or colonoscopy with ileum biopsy (cohort-II n = 37; n = 6 controls) were included.

Introduction: The Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score is the sum of 6 components, each representing one organ system with dysfunction classified on a 4-point scale. In research, usually by default, the total SOFA score is taken into account, but it may not reflect the severity of the condition of the individual organs. Often, these values are expected to predict mortality.

Introduction: Frailty is widely acknowledged as influencing health outcomes among critically ill old patients. Yet, the traditional understanding of its impact has predominantly been through frequentist statistics. We endeavored to explore this association using Bayesian statistics aiming to provide a more nuanced understanding of this multifaceted relationship.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has recently been proposed to replace non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and focus on patients with progressive disease due to the presence of metabolic dysfunction. However, it is unclear whether the new definition actually identifies patients with hepatic steatosis at increased cardiovascular risk.
Methods: A total of 4,286 asymptomatic subjects from the SAKKOPI study aged 45-80 years undergoing screening colonoscopy were analyzed.

(1) Background and Objective: MicroRNAs (miRs) are biomarkers for assessing the extent of cardiac remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI) and important predictors of clinical outcome in heart failure. Overexpression of miR-30d-5p appears to have a cardioprotective effect. The aim of the present study was to demonstrate whether miR-30d-5p could be used as a potential therapeutic target to improve post-MI adverse remodeling.

Background: There is a hypothesis of an association between diverticulosis and metabolic syndrome (MS) or its components, but data on this topic are inconsistent, and a systematic review has not been performed. We conducted a systematic review to investigate the possible association between cardiometabolic risk factors and diverticulosis.
Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted via PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science in December 2022 to collect the necessary data.
