Central nervous system tumours among adolescents and young adults (15-39 years) in Southern and Eastern Europe: Registration improvements reveal higher incidence rates compared to the US.

Eur J Cancer

November 2017

Department of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece; Clinical Epidemiology Unit, Department of Medicine, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. Electronic address:

Aim: To present incidence of central nervous system (CNS) tumours among adolescents and young adults (AYAs; 15-39 years) derived from registries of Southern and Eastern Europe (SEE) in comparison to the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER), US and explore changes due to etiological parameters or registration improvement via evaluating time trends.

Methods: Diagnoses of 11,438 incident malignant CNS tumours in AYAs (1990-2014) were retrieved from 14 collaborating SEE cancer registries and 13,573 from the publicly available SEER database (1990-2012). Age-adjusted incidence rates (AIRs) were calculated; Poisson and joinpoint regression analyses were performed for temporal trends.

Clinical Applications of Intravenous Immunoglobulins in Child Neurology.

Curr Pharm Biotechnol

November 2017

4th Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, General Hospital Papageorgiou, Thessaloniki, Greece.

Background: While there are guidelines for the use of intravenous immunoglobulins in children with Guillain-Barre syndrome and myasthenia gravis based on high-level evidence studies, data are scarce for the majority of neurologic disorders in this age group. Neuronal antibodies are detected in children with seizures of autoimmune etiology. Intravenous immunoglobulins with their broad immunomodulatory mechanism of action could be ideally effective in different forms of immunedysregulated intractable epilepsies such as autoimmune epilepsy and autoimmune Rasmussen encephalitis.

Laparoscopic evaluation and management of isolated gastric rupture in a boy after blunt abdominal injury.

Pan Afr Med J

September 2017

Assistant Professor, Chief of the 2 Department of Paediatric Surgery, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, General Hospital Papageorgiou, Thessaloniki, Greece.

Blunt abdominal injury in children can be a significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. The extent and localization of organ damage cannot be always thoroughly investigated noninvasively and in spite of modern imaging techniques and a laparotomy may be necessary for diagnosis, even though it carries a significant morbidity. We present a rare case of isolated gastric rupture after blunt abdominal injury in a 12 year old boy that sustained a bicycle accident.

Objectives: Partial or non-adherence in patients with schizophrenia is common and increases the risk of relapse. This study explored safety, tolerability and treatment outcomes in patients hospitalised for an exacerbation of schizophrenia initiated on maintenance treatment of once-monthly paliperidone palmitate (PP1M).

Methods: A 6-week, observational cohort study of patients initiated on PP1M within 3 weeks after hospital admission.

Dilated Cardiomyopathy as the Only Clinical Manifestation of Carnitine Transporter Deficiency.

Indian J Pediatr

March 2017

4th Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, General Hospital Papageorgiou, Thessaloniki, Greece.

The authors present a case of carnitine transporter deficiency, which was unmasked after an episode of respiratory distress resistant to treatment with bronchodilators. Chest radiograph showed cardiomegaly; electrocardiogram showed left ventricular hypertrophy and echocardiography revealed dilated cardiomyopathy. Heart failure therapy was initiated and metabolic screening was requested, as family history was indicative of inborn errors of metabolism.

Background: Selection of central venous catheter insertion site in ICU patients could help reduce catheter-related infections. Although subclavian was considered the most appropriate site, its preferential use in ICU patients is not generalized and questioned by contradicted meta-analysis results. In addition, conflicting data exist on alternative site selection whenever subclavian is contraindicated.

Background: Scoliotic curves do not necessarily stop progressing at skeletal maturity. The factors that influence curve behavior following bracing are not fully determined. Our objectives were to evaluate the loss of the scoliotic curve correction in a cohort of patients treated with bracing during adolescence and to compare the outcomes of 18 versus 23 h of bracing at a mean of 25 years post brace removal.

Imperforate Anus with Fistula Exiting at the Penile Skin.

J Clin Diagn Res

March 2016

Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatric Surgery, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki , General Hospital "Papageorgiou" .

We present the case of a male neonate with imperforate anus and a fistula exiting on the penile skin. Anorectal malformations in boys often present themselves with an entero-perineal or entero-urinary tract fistula, the type of which is a key feature for the classification and the treatment plan. A fistula exiting in front of the scrotum, such as described in our case, is very rare and is not incorporated in the current classification and treatment algorithms.

Kabuki syndrome is a genetic condition characterized by distinctive facial phenotype, mental retardation, and internal organ malformations. Mutations of the epigenetic genes KMT2D and KDM6A cause dysregulation of certain developmental genes and account for the multiple congenital anomalies of the syndrome. Eight cases of malignancies have been reported in young patients with Kabuki syndrome although a causative association to the syndrome has not been established.
