Due to their small dimensions, airborne particles are able to penetrate through inhalation into many human organs, from the lungs to the cardiovascular system and the brain, which can threaten our health. This work establishes a novel approach of collecting quantitative data regarding the fraction, the composition and the size distribution of combustion-emitted particulate matter through the magnetic characterization and analysis of samples received by common air pollution monitoring. To this end, SQUID magnetometry measurements were carried out for samples from urban and suburban areas in Thessaloniki, the second largest city of Greece, taking into consideration the seasonal and weekly variation of airborne particles levels as determined by occurring traffic and meteorological conditions.

Introduction: Recent research has highlighted an increased rate of co-morbidity between the neurodevelopmental-behavioral disorder of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and a variety of psychiatric disorders, such as mood disorders or bipolar disorder (BD). The etiology and clinical course of BD are considered to be determined by both genetic and environmental factors, either aggravating or improving.
Aim: This follow-up study of an adolescent aimed to clarify the co-morbidity between ADHD and BD.

Pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy (PDE-ALDH7A1) is an autosomal recessive condition due to a deficiency of α-aminoadipic semialdehyde dehydrogenase, which is a key enzyme in lysine oxidation. PDE-ALDH7A1 is a developmental and epileptic encephalopathy that was historically and empirically treated with pharmacologic doses of pyridoxine. Despite adequate seizure control, most patients with PDE-ALDH7A1 were reported to have developmental delay and intellectual disability.

We report a case of a subungual superficial acral fibromyxoma (SAFM) in a 37-year-old male patient who presented with a persistent chronic proximal paronychia of the big toenail of the right leg. Our clinical diagnosis was retronychia, an often misinterpreted condition, which must be suspected in cases of persistent paronychia, especially in the setting of trauma. The nail plate avulsion revealed a subungual tumor, which was surgically excised.

Purpose: Abductor tendon tears are increasingly recognised as a common cause of lateral hip pain. Surgical treatment of these tears has been recommended, but the indications and types of open surgery have not been precisely elucidated yet. This manuscript aimed to critically review the literature concerning all open treatment options for this condition while identifying knowledge gaps and introducing a treatment algorithm.

Objective: Parathyroidectomy (PTx) has an established benefit in patients with symptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). However, its efficacy in mild asymptomatic PHPT has not been proven. This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analyze the best available evidence from randomized-controlled trials comparing the efficacy of PTx over conservative management (non-PTx) on skeletal outcomes [fractures and bone mineral density (BMD)], nephrolithiasis risk and quality of life (QoL) in patients with mild asymptomatic PHPT.

During the last decade, a cascade of evidence has questioned the anti-fracture efficacy of vitamin D supplementation. In general, vitamin D status, reflected by serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations, seems to predict fracture risk and bone mineral density (BMD). Despite the well-documented detrimental effect of vitamin D deficiency on bones, vitamin D monotherapy does not seem to reduce the risk of fractures.

Background: "Carney Complex (CNC) is a familial lentiginosis syndrome, caused by mutations that lead to cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) signaling pathway abnormalities, predisposing to a variety of skin tumors, myxomas and endocrine tumors.
Methods/results: We describe a Greek family diagnosed with CNC after recurrent embolic strokes, secondary to left-sided atrial myxomas. There are limited cases in the literature describing this type of presentation for CNC; typically, most cases present with an endocrine syndrome.

Background: Limited literature exists concerning the femoral cement mantle quality that can be achieved through an anterior approach in total hip arthroplasty (THA). We radiologically evaluated the quality and thickness of the femoral cement mantle in patients undergoing THA utilizing the direct anterior approach (DAA).
Methods: Immediate postoperative anteroposterior and lateral radiographs of 116 consecutive patients who underwent hybrid or fully cemented THA using the DAA and cemented Quadra-C stem (Medacta, International, SA, Switzerland) were assessed by 2 arthroplasty surgeons blinded to the study.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a frequently diagnosed cancer and a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Its rapid progression, combined with the limited treatment options at late stages, imposes the need for early detection and aggressive intervention. Based on the knowledge that hepatocarcinogenesis is significantly influenced by histone acetylation, we directed our search for novel HCC therapeutics among histone deacetylation inhibitors (HDACi).

Most patients with thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer (TC) referred for diagnostic work-up and treatment are not considered at higher risk of infection from SARS-CoV-2 compared to the general population. On the other hand, healthcare resources should be spared to the maximum extent possible during a pandemic. Indeed, while thyroid nodules are very common, only a small percentage are cancerous and, in turn, most thyroid cancers are indolent in nature.
