  • Ankle fusion (AF) and total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) are two surgical options for treating severe ankle arthritis to improve mobility and reduce pain.
  • A review of clinical studies focused on how these procedures impact postoperative gait parameters found that most studies showed no significant differences in walking speed and other spatiotemporal measures between AF and TAA patients.
  • However, TAA patients exhibited greater maximum ankle dorsiflexion post-surgery, indicating they may have improved ankle range of motion compared to those who underwent AF, but results on hip and knee motion varied.

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) are incretins that regulate postprandial glucose regulation, stimulating insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells in response to food ingestion. Modified GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are being administered for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Strongly related to those disorders, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), especially its aggressive form, defined as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), is a major healthcare burden associated with high morbidity and extrahepatic complications.

  • Bile duct injury (BDI) can occur after gallbladder surgery and may lead to the need for liver transplantation (LT), though it's a rare complication with few large studies available.
  • A systematic review of seven articles involving 179 patients showed that the main reason for LT was secondary biliary cirrhosis (SBC), with significant 30-day mortality rates and notable long-term survival outcomes.
  • Although LT for BDI poses higher short-term risks compared to other conditions, it still offers a potentially effective solution for severe cases.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is estimated to be the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality and is characterized by low survival rates. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is emerging as a leading cause of HCC, whose rates are increasing, owing to the increasing prevalence of NAFLD. The pathogenesis of NAFLD-associated HCC is multifactorial: insulin resistance, obesity, diabetes and the low-grade hepatic inflammation, which characterizes NAFLD, seem to play key roles in the development and progression of HCC.

  • Hypothermic circulatory arrest is a medical procedure used to fix problems with the aortic arch, like aneurysms and dissections.
  • A study found that using deep hypothermic circulatory arrest, with or without special methods to help blood flow to the brain, had similar results for patient safety and recovery.
  • Even though some doctors prefer another method called antegrade cerebral perfusion, deep hypothermic circulatory arrest is still a safe option for protecting the brain during these surgeries.
